Update 4/18/15: I've uploaded a patch of my progress so far. Apply to a clean MM5 (US) rom.
Proto Man Sprite has been implemented for most of the playable game
Proto Buster charge shot resembles MM4
Charge Kick animation changed
Airslide code borrowed and manipulated (used with Charge Kick)
Bullet reflect is 'somewhat implemented'. It's more like, when hit while jumping, don't take damage, and automatically shoot a bullet--there are definitely some bugs.

ProtoMan 0.0043

If anyone would be able to help me figure out how to only allow one airslide per jump... I can't seem to get it right.

Finally making a thread for my project. I've been hanging around the General Mega Man hacking thread for a bit now, and I've finally decided to start showing what I'm working on.

So here it is!



For the most part, the sprite and animations are done.






I imagine the idea's probably been done a lot. I want to make the gameplay as similar to the MM9/MM10 Protoman modes as possible. I chose MM5 because, despite it's lack of difficulty, it was one of my favorite MM games growing up, and It's already got a lot of Protoman motifs. Not to mention lots of room in the ROM to work with.

My end goal is to modify just about everything: graphics overhaul, possibly new game mechanics (gimmicks), new boss graphics with new AI, to name a few things.

This is my first *real* attempt at hacking beyond graphic/palette editing, but I've started to establish more of an understanding for ASM, and I'm getting much more comfortable with the tools of the trade now.


Anyways, I thought I'd put this out here for people to see.

Nice Idea I have a few suggestions that may start you off on a good path way.
Your title screen its looks good if your going to keep like that.
I suggest you remove the roman numeral and look at te RM5 in YYCHR.
Locate that number 5 tile and piece it back to the MM5 usa rom.
Also get rid of protomans scarf gfx and change it to something more unique like his shield.
If you leave rush in replace it with tango sprite and recolor it to a dark red.


Thats my opinion of what I like to see you attempt other oldbie hackers would beg to differ.
Check insectduels post and youtube page to get some ideas going for your project.

If you're making this a Protoman title, you could consider a lot of things (IMO only though)

-Replace Megaman's appearences with Protoman. That is, the opening & ending cut scenes.

-You have Protoman's standing pose that doesn't have a shield, but shooting pose does.

-If Protoman has a shield, it should have a use in the game; by standards a useful shiled not for show only. Unless you remove the shield, problem solved.

-Replace Megaman's name to Protoman on the text scenes.

-Replace Rush with items based on MM9/10 where Protoman is playable.

New Sprite Proto Man based on MM9/10?
Like Sephiroth X's Original Proto Man 5 (MM5 Hack) back in 2000

Edit Proto Man's Sprite in Mega Man 5 via CSA, can't new tile (now disabled)

Blues 5 (not Bluesman 5) the Rockman 5 JP version

Replaced Bass with Proto Man (Fake Proto Man) based on RM7FC not MM10 (3 is NES Colors Limit, not like Grey)
Replaced Bass's Castle with Proto Man's Castle, you can edit tiles via TLP or YY-CHR
Replaced 1UP Mega Man with 1UP Proto Man based on MM9/MM10

There was one thing that I didn't like about Protoman in MM9/10.
He only uses his shield while jumping.
It might be worth it to try to make it more like the Shield in CV2.

I'll put a video of some gameplay up later today.
Here's the sprite sheet I used to make the PM sprite. His shield is on his back while he's standing (you can see like 5 pixels of it when his scarf is down).

My ASM plans include making bullets reflect, but I'm not all there yet. I found where MM takes damage, I made a subroutine to check to see if he's jumping, and if he is he doesn't take damage, and he "produces" enemy bullets. It doesn't hurt enemies though, and I can't get it to work exactly how I'd like. I'll post more on that later.

For now, I've changed MM's charge kick to a Shield Bash, based on Bass' dash in MM10. So it's not completely useless, it just doesn't work yet. I'm not familiar with CV2.

The title screen's not final, and the "V" doesn't really make sense there, so that will be changed.

I used TLP for most of the graphics editing, and I used the fceux hex editor and rock5easily's MM5 spriteviewer to piece it together correctly.

I don't have any plans to release a beta yet. Eventually, when I get the shield ASM figured out I'll release a "Play as Protoman" patch. I'll get to making that video now.

If you're going to use a Protoman hack, then use this code.

I would suggest using Sprites INC to create MM9/MM10 Protoman with the shield and assemble them with Matrixz's CSA editor. If the sprites gets too flicker like with my Roll Chan mobile, I also suggest upgrading to MMC5.

Thanks Insectduel! I remember seeing you post that somewhere before, and I think I grabbed it then. I haven't gotten around to adding it yet, but I most likely will! I am getting a lot of sprite flicker--especially during charge shots. I might transfer my work over to the MMC5 mapper with Kuja Killer's patch if I run out of room for coding, but for now I'm going to build it in the native MMC3.

I really don't mind the flicker much.


Here's a bit of gameplay. The last bit is me playing with the shield reflect code... which is obviously unfinished.

Story idea: You're Proto, and there's another Proto made by Wily out trying to steal your thunder.

I actually like this idea a lot, makes me think maybe the Darkman 4 battle could be altered so right when Fake Proto appears, he instantly transforms into Dark Man 4 rather than playing that cutscene in vanilla MM5 (because if it was unaltered, we'd have a bad case of three Protomen running around.
And the ending would have to be made different as well.

The only thing I have to address is the title. The "PROTO" letters could be tweaked to feel like they have more depth, like the original game's "MEGA".

I've kind of got plans for that idea already. This hack will take place in one of the last years before Proto Man dies and the whole Mega Man paradigm shifts.

I'm going to rely a bit on Mega Man cannon; Proto Man was the first robot built, and from him plans were made for not only Mega Man, but also Sniper Joes. I think Mega Man: Powered Up establishes this. My plan is to make all of the bosses beefy versions of the different "Joes" (instead of "____ Man", it'll be "____ Joe"). Proto Man is fed up with Wily making these bots so he goes out and takes care of them.

I'm like... eons away from being able to add story into the hack right now though.
I'm still fumbling around the code to figure out how to make a bullet shoot back automatically when he gets hit jumping.

lol. I'll definitely consider it. looks like it shouldn't take up too much more space than the current damage sprite. If I add in the double recoil it might look a bit unnatural, though.

Here some info about Blues from TV Tropes Flawed Prototype page:

Proto Man/Blues DRN-00, Mega Man's "older brother," is certainly a Bad Ass in his own right, but all what prevents him from him to be a proper Super Prototype, is his limited atomic power reactor given by Dr. Albert W. Wily and a defect his energy system later aquirred according to Blues' Solo Ending from Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters. He was originally equipped with a flawed Solar Power Reactor, which Dr. Thomas Light developed and tried to fix. However because Blues was developed as a truly independed robot with a Strong Sense Of Independence, he did ran away from Light Labs. The reason why Blues did this, was because he feared that fixing his solar power reactor would erase his individuality. Eventually, the flawed Solar Power reactor stopped to work and Blues in turn ceased to function. It was then that Dr. Albert W. Wily found him and tried to fix him, by switching his Solar Power Reactor with a early, but limited version of the atomic power reactors, which all Wilybots would later use. Besides giving Blues a new power Reactor, he was outfitted with combat capabilities and his trademark visor along with his shield. However to battle brings Blues' atomic power reactor at its limits and going above by overuse will make him to a living time bomb, as one well placed shoot can cause him to blow up and annihilates the entire environment around him. The defect his energy system later aquirred causes him pain and if the defect is left unchecked, there is always the chance, that his body will break down with the result of his death. Since he has Strong Sense Of Independence, he is uncooperative to let himself to be repaired by Dr. Light, even if it means his death. In games where Proto Man's playable he's typically a Glass Cannon due the defect mentioned above.

Really, any of the history of Mega Man/Proto Man I'm getting from the Mega Man Wiki. It's got dialogue from all of the games, and I"m just kind of fitting the pieces together as I want to... because they're ambiguous anyways!

You shouldn't judge people by their grammar.
The example I have posted here has been edited by me (I am DeathVoid on Tv Tropes) using information I gained from Zan Zidera, games, manuals and source books.
I didn't care about the grammar, when I made the edit.

The Megaman Knowledge Base, can be edited by any registered, just like on Tv Tropes.
Thus it is open to the same flaws of Tv Tropes.

They have forgotten to mention the defect of his energy system Blues aquirred later.
In the beginning it was the solar core which was flawed. Then the prototype he aquired from Dr. Wily was not as good as the atomic cores the Wily Numbers would later use. His fighting style reflects that, because he cannot strain his core as much as the others.

Now switching the core would not work, because the aquirred defect in his energy system would make the new core to malfunction. At worst the new core could overload and detonate.


Edit: Regarding the name for the hack I have a few suggestions.

Rockman Gaiden: Blue's Counterattack
or
Megaman Gaiden: Protoman's Last Stand
or
Protoman Blues: The Conclusion

Thanks for the name ideas! I haven't given much thought to that yet. I'm saving most of my easier changes until after I modify the engine to how I want it, level design, and change up boss and enemy AIs. Eventually I want to replace the music with something more fitting for Proto Man--generally more jazzy/bluesy. As for the title screen, I'm a long way away from giving that much thought. I really appreciate the offer to help, and I may take you up on it later. For now I'm going to try to get some game mechanics to work how I want them to.
