This is the translated version of the Japanese game Ai Senshi Nicol for the NES. This game was very fun and reminds me of Blaster Master, The Legend of Zelda, and Fester's Quest all rolled into one. Very basic story... You are a guy named Nicol who has to go rescue his girlfriend Stella from aliens. This patch translates everything from Japanese into English. Enjoy!!!

Sorry to say this & I really hate to say this, but if its just a titlescreen translation then its done plain lazily.

You can do a lot of graphics editing on the letters. Just look at the original JP title screen. You can't just slap plain NES text on a title screen and say its a complete translation or what not.

Maybe you should redo it then, or quit whining. Either way...

Look, in comparison with the other hacks that you released, this one is very disappointing. There's little to translate in this game and yet you did not make a well designed title logo (just little red letters with a huge rose at the bottom!).

If you don't look at my comment constructively, well yeah, that's how narrow-minded people get it. Sorry.

*snip*

I think you have misunderstood me.
It is that pacnsave guy, who made the dick response.
And I also have to agree: You could have done it better.
Off-topic: Where can I ask for hacking help, if I don't want to hack Mario, Zelda or MegaMan games, but less well known Famicom games?

Sorry I said that, because I was just thinking that someone wanted to be quick to criticize without looking at my other work and thinking,"something must have not worked for him to release other title screens that are better than that." I just hate when people do that. Some do that without ever looking at the rom themselves, or knowing what I'm dealing with in the rom. But, I see you have looked at my previous work so I'll let you know why I had to make the title screen that way. I could not find the title screen pattern in the hex editor. So, instead of making them as I usually do I was forced to use just the text where I could fit it. I realize it was lazy, but honestly I couldn't make it work like I wanted.

Wait, you can find the title screen pattern through hex editor?
I always use YY-CHR, if I want to search for the title screen graphics.
I already have an example: In one game I want to locallize and improve, I have found the logo of the titlescreen, but I cannot display it on YY-CHR correctly, no matter what. What should I do? Do you mean with title screen pattern in hex editor, that the hex editor tells you, how you can make it display in YY-CHR correctly?

@Trinitronity: Oh okay, cool. Btw enough of the "d" word

You can view the hex values of the titlescreen with FCEUX emulator's Name Table Viewer. Also open PPU viewer. YY-CHR only contains the tiles, use a hexeditor.

@pacnsacdave: Okay its cool. And I see your point with Nicol's titlescreen. The TS is not compressed, just it's coded to save space by it multiplying repeating tiles, esp. on the NICOL characters.

BUT, I think you can use the space above the TS for the English title. I also think that that space is supposed to be where the Konami logo should appear like in the FDS version. If you look in the ROM w/ YY-CHR where the tiles of the title is, there's the Konami logo.

In hex editor, it is located at offset 00004F39 to 00004F43 and 00004F48 to 00004F52.
You can draw the English title there, tho you need to squeeze in the letters to fit.

EDIT: Either that^, or just restore the Konami logo there.

I believe you are right. I noticed unused konami graphics when attempting to change the title screen. That, and also a lot of pacman graphics being unused in there as well lol

Hmm...I can see now, what tile ID every part of the logo is...however, I just cannot find any way to actually pause the FCEUX emulator, and it gets really annoying, since it is one of those games, that has demo play after not pressing any buttons at the title screen...

You can pause it. Just press pause on the keyboard. That's the hotkey for it.

Thanks.
Now I just need to find someone, who is skilled at drawing, so I can later edit the drawing and insert it into the game.

Wasn't sure if you got everything like you wanted so this may help.

Change 4F36 to 20 and 4F37 to 00. Doesn't have to be, but made a little easier for me.

4F38-5079 Tiles
Less than equal to 7F. Example 0400. The next 4 tiles will be 00, 00, 00, and 00.
Greater than equal to 81. Example 8400010203. The next 4 tiles will be 00, 01, 02, and 04.
Make sure everthing equals full screen.

(827 bytes collapsed: )

507A-508A Palette
Less than equal to 7F. Example 0800. The next 8 palette blocks will be 00.
Greater than equal to 81. Example 8255AA. The next 2 palette blocks will be 55 and AA.
Make sure everthing equals full screen.
