With the Arkanoid editor "Arkalavista" available on Mac OSX computers, I was able to make a few Arkanoid hacks that I will now share.

Major Hacks

Arkanoid Advanced Hack - A full ROM hack meant to take full advantage of what Arkalavista could do. It includes several new levels, new graphics, and a speedup patch that doubles the Vaus' (paddle's) speed by 2x, making it slightly more playable without the Arkanoid Vaus controller (which only a handful of emulators support)

Chinese Arkanoid - Another full ROM hack with levels based around Chinese themes, originally it was made on a Chinese-language Japanese ROM for Arkanoid that was missing the second graphics bank needed for the DOH battle at the end of the game. To make it more stable, it has since been relocated to a US ROM with a few additional upgrades. It is now in full English, the levels are slightly altered, and it is now possible to have a black block.

Graphic-only Hacks

Arkanoij - More of a remix/Kai version of Arkanoid, this was more of an experimental ROM hack that I created as a starting point for the hacks that would follow. It has all 36 levels from the original game with different color palettes, graphics, and the previously-mentioned speedup patch.

Arkanoid After Dark - Named after the somewhat unknown graphic hacks of Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man for arcades, this was made to be a "neon" version of the original Arkanoid, with many of the tiles' CHR being made hollow.

Goindol - A graphic hack that styles the game to be like the arcade game "Goindol", which itself is an Arkanoid clone made in Korea. Sprites for the paddle, ball, blocks, backgrounds, borders, and power ups were altered to match the Goindol arcade game, and the backgrounds or the first and fourth backgrounds being changed.

"Ports"

Riddle of Pythagoras - A hack that re-creates 35 of the 50 levels featured in Sega's "Riddle of Pythagoras" Arkanoid clone.

Quester - A recreation of Namco's own Arkanoid clone "Quester", this ports over all 33 levels form the original game, plus three levels from Quester's "Special Edition".

Wall Crash - A hack that includes scaled-down versions of levels from the indian-made Breakout clone "Wall Crash" that predates Arkanoid. Only levels 1 through 24 are actually remakes of Wall Crash levels; the rest of the game is straight-up Arkanoid.

My favorite one is the Arkanoid Advanced Hack... Why no one else is commenting? These hacks kick ass...

Thanks Googie. Good to hear you enjoyed my hacks. I certainly did try to make the Advanced Hack look as good as the NES would allow it.

I have a new hack for everyone.

Based on the Commodore Amiga version, with a whole new level set of 32 levels to blast through, all ported to the NES.

Thank you for considering I make one based on Impact, but I'm afraid I'll have to turn the request down.

Impact I actually have known about for a while, through some guy playing the DOS version which is easily more crippled than the Amiga version you linked. Plus, with 80 different boards, it'd be difficult for me to pick out the best 35 to go into Arkanoid. And not to mention Impact has invisible bricks, as well as indestructible and multi hit blocks that aren't colored Gold.

I made the Amiga level set hack because I had previously mapped it out for VGMaps, and I actually have a Crackout conversion in the works which I'm making since Crackout is an NES game, making the graphics easy to port into an Arkanoid ROM and unlike Impact (well, the DOS version at least) Crackout, despite having very poor ball physics that cripple it on stages such as 2-10 Day, is still a decent Breakout clone; which is why I'm making an Arkanoid hack that includes levels and graphics from it.

I will say again, thanks for the recommendation.

You're always welcome to submit my hacks. Ever since ROMhacking.net required the use of getting a ROM's info, which let's just say isn't easy on a Macintosh, I can't really get hacks onto the site myself.

Anyways, here's a bit of a bonus for hack-developers.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1szxnchngiz06st/Arkanoid%20ROMs%20for%20Editor.zip
This includes a build of Arkanoid with three different possible graphic sets. The goal was to make a version that allows use of Palette 0 along with 1, 2, and 3, since now with this new version all four palettes use the same color for the background. This will allow you to use two additional block colors: those that are used in the level borders and HUD.
Below you'll find a comparison between the original and the three different graphics options.

Feel free to use these for your own hacks.

Thanks. You may want to clean up the U in the text, as it's off-centered compared to the rest of the font.
Actually, I went and fixed the font myself.

A bit of a minor update, I altered the "Cyan" color used in the Arkanoid 2 Graphics ROM to make it closer to the Cyan color depicted in the arcades.

Thanks! I should note that these color edits are exclusive to the Arkanoid 2 Graphics hack since I had already modified the Yellow in the original game so it matches it's color in the NES version of Arkanoid 2.

And since it freed up the orange originally used for the "yellow" blocks, I had went and changed the salmon color that was used to represent orange into an actual orange, which eventually encouraged me to chance the light blue blocks into a color that was closer to the arcade's Cyan.

I also made a small update to the download; The Arkandoid 2-styled ROM had a few changes made to it. I fixed an overlooked color issue with Level 7 (it still used the salmon in the old versions instead of orange) and I altered the "shine" of the structure of Level 34 from magenta to white.

If anyone wants to see the new look of the levels, you can check this link:

I apologize for the bump, but I have a hack.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/lx11p3w6kblpayi/Arkanoid%20-%20Gigas%20Conversion.zip?dl=0

I was originally neglecting to release this because of the sheer difficulty of the levels thanks to ball speed (since hitting indestructible blocks increases the speed of the ball, and it reaches max speed in only 250 bounces)

It's a conversion of Sega's "Gigas" arcade game, which itself is similar to Arkanoid in a number of ways.

Thanks.

I'd like to know how you guys are modifying the palettes of the title screen and in-game sprites, since I have a few modifications I'd like to make myself to the palettes in the Advanced Hack that Arkalavista normally can't edit.

I also made a few edits to the default Vaus sprite to add some shading/highlights to it, and applied some dithering to the powerups.

The image below shows the results, along with the intended palettes I plan to give them.

I can't show the sprites in action since my PC is currently out of commission, therefore giving me no access to YY-CHR.

Ok, updated patch is released on romhack here ----> http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2367/

I'll have to ask Dave to post on here about the palette stuff, he is better with answering those questions. I'll msg him to check out this post.

Understood.
I went and fixed the error on one of the levels, so you can go ahead and re-submit the reversion to replace the old one. It's in the same link as the one I originally posted the hack with (thank you Dropbox)
