So currently I'm working on a Mario 3 hack, I plan to do the full game obviously. I've got about almost 2 worlds done. Then I'm gonna release a 2 world hack for all of you to try out. Here's a list of the changes I plan to make for my hack.
World 1
-Instead of the normal 6 levels, there's gonna be 9 levels. That's because I plan on taking 3 of the lost levels and putting them as levels in the first world.

World 3
-Every normal stage will be changed to a swimming stage, which means that's a ton of swimming stages. But this is the whole point, it's called water world for a reason.

World 5
-This world is gonna be huge! There's already 9 normal levels. And I wanna try to squeeze in 7 of the lost levels in to here. Making the sky world have 16 normal stages in total.

World 6
-Another huge world, this world already has 9 regular levels. I plan to add another 3 more levels. Making 12 in total.

World 7
-That lost level with the swimming waterfall and no enemies is gonna be turned into another level for this world. Bringing the total of regular levels up to 10. Also, don't expect this world to be a walk in the park. Be prepared to use plenty of advanced Mario 3 techniques, and also prepare for tons and tons of plants. Nothing but plants in this world.

I also have to figure out which world will be getting that one extra dungeon. But I do plan on using all the lost levels in my hack. Also, a couple other things to note here. I may or may not wanna name all my levels, I'm almost leaning towards wanting to name my levels. And one question for you all out there who have or are hacking Mario 3. I use JNes to test my levels, and I've only tested the first world and for the most part it's good to go. Now I read up on JNes that you can't use Game Genie codes on hacks. Which is sort of a pain for me, because I'm ready to test my levels in the second world. But if I can't use the world skip codes then I don't know how I'm gonna test my other levels.

I really like your idea and think it's creative. Though, I pretty much resurrected all the lost levels in my SMB3 hack, which includes all the old levels, e-levels and 4 new levels (109 in total). Though, there's nothing wrong with some good competition.

http://acmlm.kafuka.org/board/thread.php?id=7872

EDIT: I still want you to know that I encourage you to make this hack and that I know it can be hard when starting out hacking something like this.

Well, the thing is. I didn't think I was gonna hack the lost levels to be honest. But since their in the game already to be hacked and placed in there as I see fit. Then I'm gonna do it, at first on this project I wasn't really feeling it on some of my levels. But the more I go back and overlook my levels and play through them, the more I appreciate my hack. Plus, I'm gonna be coming up with some creative things that I think you guys will really like. Just wait until the full game is done to see what it will be. But there will still be demos of this game. Because I definitely need the input from this community.

Edit-I think I may need to learn a little bit of ASM to be able to put name for the levels.

Start here: http://skilldrick.github.io/easy6502/ and as a reference to the mnemonics http://www.obelisk.demon.co.uk/6502/reference.html

I personally used those when I was starting out about a year and a half ago. Good luck.

Honestly, I can't wait.
Oh, and shanem, I'm still trying to figure out how the ASM takes input. I looked through the code, but I couldn't find the input code or the necessary mnemonics.

So I'm trying to edit a water level in World 3, and I want it to be a completely waterfall level for the most part. So I have the waterfall broken up into 2 parts because it has to be. So the top half of the waterfall seems to work fine with me wanting to put pipes and blocks, etc in it. But then the bottom half of the waterfall won't allow me to put pipes and everything else in it without the game "hiding" the pipes and everything from sight.

Oh...The waterfall has higher Z-order. In other words, it has more priority than the other objects. One thing that I did was use the object with the lowest Z-order when that happened to me. Hope it works here.

If you look at this album, you can see what I mean. This is what I should've said in the first place....Anyways, yeah.

http://s1281.photobucket.com/user/Ryan_J_Benner/library/?sort=3&page=1

The first photo is where part of the pipe is behind the waterfall, this isn't what I want. :-(
The second photo is where part of the pipe is correctly positioned. :-)

I was correct. Again, this is a z-order issue. The waterfall uses 4 bytes whereas the pipe uses 3. Use another 4 byte object with lower z-order and turn it into a waterfall.

EDIT: To make a picture show up with Photobucket, click on the "IMG" button on the right-hand side and paste IMG until the end of it.

EDIT2: Is this kinda what you wanted to do?

Why didn't anyone tell me that FCEUX was a better emulator to use for testing then JNes? I'm now able to go to the Desert World and test out my levels. And I must say that a good chunk of levels turned out to be much tougher than I thought they would be. Which is a good thing I think. Maybe I'll post a gameplay vid of the first stage of my hack. You'll just have to wait and see...

It's another emulator for the NES, and I'm coming to find that it's not nearly as good as as FCEUX.

So I figured out this whole z order thing. Now I gotta get back to making my levels here, but I'm still having frustration with the map editor program. Needless to say, I've been on a lull for the last 2 days cause I've been real annoyed with the map editor program.

The only real advantage of using ben's map editor is that you can change tiles, airship positions and castle locks. My advice would be to use SMB3 Workshop for everything else.

It would help if you could explain what frustrations you are having with your editor, too. If you don't, it will be really hard to assist you. Good luck.

So I noticed that when I go and look at the pointers on the map for the normal Mario 3 rom. That everything looks fine and all. Like the top row of the map where level 1 starts in world 1 and is the first pointer. After that the pointers go like this. World 1 hammer bros., World 1-2, World 1-3, and World 1 hammer brothers. Now my problem that I'm having is that I'm able to point to some of the things I want the map to point to. But not everything is pointing to where it should. And I'm using the implement changes button as well. Yet, everything is still not going how it should.

After pressing the "Implement changes" button, are you immediately saving right after? Like...before changing another pointer? That happens to me at times. I learned that I'm suppose to save after implementing EACH change.

Since you are having problems, use SMB3 Workshop and use the "Map Editor", change level data the same way you would with the SMB3 editor by Ben. Give that a try and see if it rectifies the situation.

Now I'm still having problems with even that, workshop that is. So I go to my world 1 map, and the stage that says level 1. I want to turn that into the lost level 1, then the level that says 2. I want to turn that into World 1-1, so the data for level 1 turns out to be fine being the first lost level. But then when I go to change level 2 to be World 1-1 then it reads as being the same enemy and object data as the lost level 1.

Give me exactly what data you are inputting for those 2 levels (object and enemy). Then, when you are done, tell me if they read the exact same as what you put in.
