Hey shanem, thanks for posting and sharing here. I hope you stick around man, i think you are an awesome hacker with serious skills as well as an all around great guy to even share your work and your code with the community.

Keep the hits coming, stay a while, hell, stay forever, LMAO.

Thank you. Knowing that my works are appreciated makes it worth doing more hacks. Will do. Also, if you don't know how to switch disk sides to get SMB2J on Side B, the info is on the first post on this thread. Enjoy.

Which one are you currently trying out? SMB1 (Side A) or SMB2J (Side B)?

I actually started with the side B. SMBJ2. As a kid i never knew about the REAL smb 2 until many years later. The american version of super mario brothers 2 was awesome as well, but i actually feel insulted that the original super mario brothers 2 in japan was deemed a little too hard for us americans at the current time. LOL.

Okay. I hope that you enjoy it.

When you finish playing it, you are free to share you thoughts on it and possible ideas on what I can do to improve on it. So far, from FB and my own forum, people seem to like the translation of 9-4 and the lives fix the most. (The one where you'd get a Game Over if you get more than 128 lives https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMWJXGvCiLY)

I corrected level designs in two levels that I initially overlooked (4-1 pipe made longer at beginning and 7-4 lava added at the end). There are no known glitches so far.

I'm looking for some ideas. It's official that I'm going to fix the A-3 and B-1 spring glitch, left over from the original, but what do you all think about me removing halfway points in Worlds A-D to reflect the SMAS SNES version? I like that the SNES version is more difficult, in some ways. I've already made Hammer Bros aggressive and Bowser throw hammers in Worlds A-D. Thanks.

I'm on the fence on this one.
But I think I lean a little towards keeping the half way points so that it's closer to the original experience. But only because I can always just play SMAS.

Thank you for the feedback, Vanya. I have started working on improving on this game. So far, it is looking good! It should be ready in a few days.

EDIT: I actually found residual code that I made use of, a new beta mode is now included! Until then, the rest is a surprise!!!

Thanks. Release date is 03/21/14, or the second day of Spring (Friday). My coding seems stable. Almost done testing it.

Thank you. "MOOAARRRR" is here! Unfortunately, I have found a glitch, which I have corrected. On D-4, I accidentally omitted the Wind while adding the block to match the ANNSMB addition of a block. That has been fixed!

I'm glad that you've enjoyed my current work. Well, you're really gonna love this! Keep reading on!

@Everyone
Remember how I mentioned a beta feature that I 'discovered'? Well let me try to explain it. In the original SMB1, when you beat 8-4, the player is granted a new "hard mode" in which Koopas and other enemies move faster, Buzzy Beetles replace Goombas, and other minor differences. Well, I was bored one afternoon and saw that on the Super Mario Allstars version of "The Lost Levels" (SMB2J) contains that mode for Worlds A-D!!!! I was surprised by this. I looked at my disassembly for the FDS version and saw that it was fully coded to include this "hard mode"! It appeared to be residual code left over from SMB1. So...what was I to do? I had no choice but to resurrect this feature in SMB2J (Side B) of my game for Worlds A-D!!!! It now includes this beta element, which was possibly intended but omitted. (0.o)

What else?

*Removed half way point to Worlds A-D (Sorry Vanya; if you want a patch with em' intact, just PM me.)

*Fixed the Springboard glitch on A-3 left over from the original version made by Nintendo.

*A-3 Corrected data to add the extra 2 Bloopers found in ANNSMB. More enemies = more fun!

*A-3 Made the wind last longer. I hated that it was so short to begin with.

*Added more enemies to B-1.

*Corrected the omitted Wind from D-4

Now, I don't blame people for not wanting to beat Worlds 1-8(9) 8 times to accumulate 8 stars...so I'll just give you the offset to give yourself the 8 stars to try this. Though, I personally think it's better to beat it 8 times. Use a hex editor to change the value:

Change 0x1CC18 from $00 to $08

That's not all! In the original FDS version, unedited Worlds A-D were much easier. Since I borrowed heavily from the more developed Allstars version (SNES), it is now harder! In fact, they are diabolically evil. With aggressive Hammer Bros, hammer Bowser and faster Fire Bars. These are new additions to the beta mode. In addition, one of the Fire Bar is a beta enemy! Yep.

=============================================

I challenge any fans to try beating Worlds A-D without using a single warp zone. Take a picture at the end of each castle as proof, and upload it and I will present you with a special PM containing a patch to one of my unreleased hacks...from my secret stash!!!!! (First time I ever do this.)

Now, it is hard, but not impossible. (C-4 is the hardest.) I have beaten all 52 stages of the game as proof. I have not used any cheats, either. You are forbidden from cheating if you participate. Also, a new palette file with better compatibility with ALL NES/FDS games! REMEMBER THE RULES...No savestates, cheats and show the pics. Enjoy!!!

=============================================

I don't really have new pics. But here is 9-4, which I have translated from the original Japanese message "Arigatou": Thank You. And...they use the beta blocks!

Patch it to a clean, unheadered SMB1 FDS ROM.

That could inspire one to make an addendum patch where you gain a star after beating each world or something like that.

This is the same game, just with new features that I listed above.

Good luck. It may be brutal, but the prize is worth it. I have 3 unreleased games. If you beat it, I'll PM you with a list of the three and let you choose one!

So I haven't completed the A-D challenge yet, but I did beat both SMB1.5 and SMB2 on stream with no warps (including world 9). I have a couple bugs to report. In SMB2j, the vine in 8-2 doesn't appear if the screen is scrolled too far right when you hit it. I tried hitting it when the vine block was basically at the very left of the screen, and the vine didn't show up. Another glitch I encountered is that the wind can actually push you through blocks, if you're pushing in the opposite direction of the wind and keep tapping the d-pad in that direction.

Anyway, I need to beat SMB2j 7 more times (most likely gonna warp and not stream that endeavor) and then I'll stream my try at worlds A-D.

I like the effort! Those two "glitches" that you mentioned were in the original. They were not caused on my part. The vine actually has to do with OAM and how horizontal scrolling works. I'm not sure what causes the Wind glitch, though. Though, I was able to add skid sound while wind is blowing. Something that the original version omitted.

The sprite shuffler code is what determines z-order on sprites. I can try to raise the z-order for the blocks when wind blows, though it might not be that easy.

PS Did you record the live stream? I would enjoy watching.
