Yikes the music is manually edited by hex?! I hope someday someone makes a program that inserts something like a midi into the rom for you.

It'd be rather difficult to automate; there is a Japanese program that can try to import midis and spit out hex you need to insert, but it's unreliable and the midi has to follow certain parameters and all that business. Plus you have the fact that you've got stuff like duty cycles and percussion becoming the noise channel and the triangle wave being unable to change volume and little quirks like that that make it way more of a pain in the ass to figure out. It'd be nice, but I can't really see it happening.

You know, what I love to see? An program, that converts music tracks made with FamiTracker into NSF files, which can be immidiately inserted into MegaMan ROMs without further editing.
I really hope I will survive the day where this finally happens...

Perhaps an editor like ntrq that can be used to compose music? Just need something to help speed the process up.

How does it work? Is it like FamiTracker? What's different?

Uhm...google it? It lets you compose nsf files on an actual nes. You're basically forced to program music in the format real nes music would be coded (write blocks of notes in certain lengths and then arrange the blocks in a pattern to form a song). Here's a nsf I composed in ntrq:

NTRQ certainly isn't beginner stuff but it's much less time consuming than manually writing something in hex.

After nearly two years of silence due to a combination of lack of interest and some annoying, (for me) almost unfixable bugs that popped up during development (that are now fixed), I'm finally working on this hack once again. Here's a small slideshow of the 10 stages that are more or less done, as well as some new music.

Alternative video link: Click me

I hope you'll enjoy!

I probably won't post more gameplay videos of the hack until it's done (it will be boring to play a new hack when you've seen 50% of it already, I guess), but I might update this thread more frequently with some new screens or other oddities, or ask for feedback or ideas, which are of course always welcome.

That is one of the most impressive Megaman hacks or even fangames that I've seen, and really of any game series. I haven't been looking around actively anymore for several years, but I've looked around here and there. The music you made for it actually sounds really good and feels soothing to listen to. A lot of them I've heard out there in other hacks / fangames sound like something kind of randomly put together in hopes of it sounding good; though I understand that composing music isn't requires a lot of creativity and at least a good understanding of what arrangement of things will express which kinds of feelings / experience.

The Level design, the choice of graphics, and the use of enemies from other Megaman games and any custom objects / enemies you may have looks also well done.

This looks like a hack / game that I would likely treasure (of course I'd have to play through it, but looking amazing from everything I can see).

Thanks! I probably won't give out anything before it's done, as I want people to experience the whole thing in one go. But never say never.

Thank you very much for these words, I'm glad you like what you see, and of course, the music. I must admit I'm not really good with graphics and the visual stuff; all I can do is to import graphics from other games and hope that they match and fit in a level, so I'm glad it looks alright.

I had to take another break after mid january, as I temporarily lost interest again after 2 months of intense work with the hack. I lose interest in games quite often, and then it will come back later. Last time I lost interest in Mega Man it took almost 2 years to recover and continue on the hack. Luckily, this time the "MM is boring" break only lasted 4 months, and now I'm working on it again (and since summer vacation just started for me and all my friends are going on trips with their girlfriends, a privilege I don't have anymore, I should have a lot of time to work on it).

Not much to show since last time, but here's a snap of Castle 1 Stage 3, which I'm working on now.

You might not be good with graphics (I'm not either), but your 'new' enemies and music are awesome! And you use graphics from the MM9-MM10 endless modes, and I really like that, it's not often you see them in hacks. I wanted to use MM9-MM10 graphics for my hack the this first when I started making it, but then I decided not to, because these tilesets are all kinda the same to be used as regular RM stage tilesets, with some exceptions, like the underground ones. But they are a very good source of Wily Castle tilesets (for example my Wily 4 tileset is custom, but it's a heavily redrawn version of the pink tileset from MM9 Endless, or my old tileset for Wily 2, which was a mix between MM2 W2-3 and MM9 W4 graphics).

And unfortunately, this "lazyness wave" as I call it when you don't want to do anything, or just work on stuff, often gets to me too. Or you run out of ideas... I made so many stages for MM3, I can't make completely new ones anymore... Or you are trying to make something new, but it just doesn't work. Or someone uses the same idea you came up with and releases a game with it earlier than you, that's the worst thing ever, because 'hey you copied this', even if it was an original idea and you didn't know someone else also came up with it. For example, in Mega Man Endless - a new fangame by Blyka and many other level creators - there are rooms that use the Magnet Force with conveyor belts as a mixed gimmick. And believe it or not, in Wily 3 in my hack, I did exactly the same thing in my hack before Endless was released (when I made that post about Wily 3 in my thread), a little challenge with conveyor belts and Magnet Forces. Or the SPark Man platforms with the spike walls... When I saw these same ideas in Endless was like... Why...? Why...?? XD

I'm so tired right now, I had to re-read this whole mess and fix it. Sorry if it's all engrish.

Thanks for the nice feedback! I would actually say that you are good with graphics, one of a few - these custom graphics in some of your MMC are gorgeous if you ask me. Maybe you're just tired of seeing them so often. But yeah, MM9 and MM10s endless stage graphics are indeed good for Wily castles, as graphics are never as detailed there as in the original levels (though, I used them there as well). I'm probably going to use more of them for the rest of the castle stages as well.

Yeah, I know what you mean with the "someone else also came up with that original idea"-problem, it happened to me as well. I didn't know about this new MM Endless fangame, I took a look at it on YouTube and I must admit it looks great; nice and polished. I wouldn't worry too much if people use the same ideas though, as we're all just tweaking the original games anyway and have to be as original as we can within these limits. But if you removed your ideas from your hack already, I can understand that as well; no one would want to be accused of copying, even if you didn't really do it.

Hey guys. Just a small 2017 video update. I apologoze for this taking a lot longer than I ever thought. I guess that's how it is when you end up changing more than you initially planned.

Now, however, we're slowly getting there. I'd estimate the hack is about 85% done. All annoying bugs and glitches are now totally gone, and only the last 3 levels haven't been made yet (the last 2 aren't supposed to be that long anyway). Below is a small video proving I'm not dead.

Would you consider having new robot masters? If they have new attack patterns, new robot masters would be great step forward for this romhack.

Unfortunately my drawing skills are terrible, and so is my imagination. Though, they will get new or at least altered attack patterns!

Hey,

This hacks looks promising. Great job implementing enemies from MM5/6/9.

TBH a lot of MM romhacks are not to my liking, either they're kaizo, or random questionable stuff, but this one looks great.

Those MM5 tigers trying to jump when they have no place look a bit retarded though. Also the Mummies look out of place in that modern tech background, they're the kind of enemies which are hard to fit outside of their original level without looking 'random'.

Is that music your own as well?
