Hey all, for the past few weeks I've been working on inserting the sprites from The Minish Cap into A Link To The Past... here's a video of the progress so far (and yes, there are a lot of graphic glitches that I'm still trying to fix)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAFh_HwXUoY

I've run into a few issues though:
- Link doesn't always have his shield equipped in TMC, so no direct sprites can be transferred
- there is a slight size difference between the two games (often only by 2px or so)
- TMC uses more frames per animation, so the movement in LTTP may look a bit choppy

Either way, I plan on sharing the sprite sheets either when I've completed Link's graphics or when I've given up (whichever comes first)

Currently, I'm at the stage where I'm burning out... so I thought I'd ask the rom hacking community:
Do the graphics that I've replaced look buggy?
-and-
Is this something I should continue work on?

This looks pretty cool. Of course, it's up to you if you want to keep working on it or not. My general rule of thumb with ROM hacking and such is: if you're not enjoying it, don't do it. Or, if you don't think the end result will be worth it to you, don't do it.

Anyway, yeah I'd like to see this finished. I noticed you changed up the faerie and hearts as well as some indoor graphics. Do you plan on doing other sprites besides Link?

Yeah, definitively looks like an improvement. I think you should keep going; LoZ3 hacking was always hampered by the lack of graphical alternatives.

I'm personally interested in it. I'd love to see more work on it.

The new sprites are fantastic. The only alternative we've seen are the new sprites from Parallel Worlds. Bringing in the ones from the Minish Cap really is a refreshment for A link to the past game.

Long time no see ghillie! To answer your questions...

''Do the graphics that I've replaced look buggy?''

They look great, I especially like when Link is grabing objects. The fact that the sprite is 2px off don't change the fact it looks refreshing and surprisingly an effective eye candy.

''Is this something I should continue work on?''

You really should, great work so far! I'd certainly have a proper and fitting use for your finished sprite... it could be used in Parallel Universes to replace the main hero...Then I would replace the Zelda sprite by the current Link sprite I'm using and then... One Link from one universe goes rescuing/helping another Link from another universe! Hilarity dialog lines ensues! Either way, good work keep at it!

Hey, thanks for the replies guys

It's pretty ridiculous how good the GBA graphics look compared to the SNES... especially considering that they had the capabilities back in the 90's to have these upgraded graphics on the SNES, but lacked proper direction in the art department haha

I'm mainly working on Link (there's a lot more sprites than I expected... and it's difficult figuring out which image is which, they all start to look the same after a while). I've been doing a little work in the other areas of the game, but it's only when I start getting frustrated with Link and need something easy to work with...

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I'll post some new stuff here in a while...

I'm gonna agree that Link original graphics sheet can be much confusing. Maybe by comparing the original game, your sprite hack and these released hacks below you'll figure it out

Hey all, need a bit of help from any LTTP players... I've searched all over other people's sprite sheets, and I cannot for the life of me find what 4 of these frames are used for: E-8, F-6, F-7, and K-1 (chart attached)... I could just fill in with guess work, but I won't be able to test the graphics to see if the new sprites fit or not... thanks in advance!

Also, the graph acts as a chart for what I've finished thus far... the visible sprites I have yet to do...

I'll post another video soon, I've been updating some of the weapons too, and I like showing off

I know an effective way to find the remaining frames. When you don't know what a specific tile is used for, edit it's gfx to be a colored square instead. For exemple:

Then go play the game and try out ALL your items (book of mudora, shovel), use all your abilities (running, grabbing rocks etc..), while finding what they are used for!

I'll try and see if I can find some myself!

5 months later.......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iahKt0OPFQ

getting closer! and once I'm finally finished with the project, I'll be releasing all sprite sheets / notes that I've taken

also, a few extras:
- changed the flute duck to MC's Zeffa
- changed "wishing / praying" to playing the Ocarina
- unfortunately I forgot to insert the 2bpp images like the new weapon designs, I'll show them off in the next video
- stole the hammer style from the Smithy in LTTP

hope y'all like it

It's pretty impressive. I'm looking forward to the sprite hack. Are you going to change the backgrounds and enemies as well, or just link?

Good job with the grafics!
By the way, what are your plans with Death Mountain?
It is quite mysterious from the atmosphere now.

I like it. Especially changing his reading/praying sprite, the one in the original game always looked off to me.

Are you changing all the other character sprites as well? I'm kind of stuck in my graphics hack right now, so seeing your success is inspiring
