Moai-Kun, puzzle game that was released only in Japan. I had this game on my NES in a "191 in 1" pirate cartridge in the 90s and I started to hack this game in 2007, but the hard disk all my work was in got broken shortly after starting the hack.

I got a private message from one of the users of this board about the data of this game little while ago and it sparked an interest to hack this game again. Couple of days ago I decided to start looking for the level data again, and after I found the level pointers building the level editor was easy. I used Kawa's "Map Editor Creation Tutorial's" tile drawing code as a starting point and it gave me a great kick start to finish the editor. Thank you, Kawa!

The editor currently edits levels and level enemies. It doesn't have graphics loading or any other fancy stuff, because I thought it would be an overkill for such a marginal game.

EDIT: The editor is no longer dependent to VisualBasic PowerPack. It is written in C# (target framework 4.0 Client), so NET Framework 4.0 Runtime libraries are needed to run the editor.

EDIT 5/8/12: Screenshot and download links fixed.

What's with Japan and its obsession with Moai...

Keep up the good work.

I had this in the back burner for a long time...

Legato: The editor doesn't open up for me, I even downloaded a few dll files from different sites & it still won't run for me.

Hmm, does it give any error messages? It should only need NET Framework 4.0.

EDIT: I updated the first post with a cleaned version of the editor. It no longer depends to VisualBasic.PowerPack, so only libraries it needs to run now are the .NET Framework 4.0 Runtime libraries.

Does it give more specific error? One more try, I uploaded a new version, you can download it from the link in my first post. Any luck?

Haha, haven't seen Windows XP screen in a while I almost miss its visual style and quirks!

Now we're cookin' with gas, the editor works like a charm! Thanks for fix man, I really appreciate it! The editor is really easy to use, click here click there it's real sweet! Are you planning update your editor in the future? Maybe to make the enemies show? ^^

Great! It seems that Windows versions before Vista don't like compressed .png icons. Changing the icon to standard .ico fixed the issue.

Thanks! Well, it's a simple game with only 16 different tiles so it's hard to make the editor too complicated

I don't think I'll be adding many new features to the editor, except for maybe level music, tile and enemy properties editing. But feel free to suggest anything, if you feel that something is not working correctly or is missing from the editor! I won't be doing graphics loading, because the game's graphic selection is too small for that to really pay off: it's simpler to just load them from ripped graphic files.

I also found out that if you change level theme to over 0x0F the game loads the level as a horizontally scrolling (half a screen tall and two screens wide) level. For some reason the original game doesn't use any scrolling screens. I may add a feature to sort level rows correctly, so that kind of levels can be made with the editor.

I'm just trowing this out there, maybe you can add a palette feature? That'd be pretty cool.

Hmm, I guess that would need graphics loading to work correctly and be usable. To be honest, I'm not that familiar with bit-level reading and manipulation with C#, so I have no idea how I would do the graphics loading. I guess I'll check some open source editors coded in C# to get some ideas. It would be a good learning experience to code some more features, even though those features might not be that essential for editing.

Feel free to check Epic Edit, which does just that. Let me know if you need help.

Thank you, Stifu! I played a little bit around with your code and got the graphics loading working. I'm currently in a student exchange, so I'll work on this more during summer when I get back home after the finals and traveling around.

I think I might have to give this editor a try someday.
