Out of curiousity... How does one build a community on the Internet? I mean... An empty Xbox Live friends list, my YIM list has one person, I have no clue how to get party members in Guild Wars, my forums have like three members (none of which are active), my wiki has literally only myself, and so on.

I know for certain I'm stretching things too thin either way. Having accounts on far too many forums, games, sites, etc. I honestly couldn't possibly hold a conversation on such a large number of places. I'll probably start giving away some of my less useful accounts to those who can benefit from them! Let me know if you want any. I've got a spare Yahoo ID for example.

At least that means in the rare event I am asked to help, I have a huge amount of time. How about I log onto IRC? I'm not sure what the main Acmlm channel or server is anymore though.

I'm like that as well...my AIM buddy list only has five people on it! Most people apparently have hundreds...(then again, I clean it up every so often and have changed AIM names a few times, so it's not like I still have people on from January 2003 when I first got AIM). I have started several boards but none of them ever got very active, the only thing anyone seems to be interested in is hacking them. I get the feeling that I'm generally ignored at places, but at least that's better than being hated.

Right now, this is the only board I post at. For a while in early 2005 I was at like 6 boards.

I believe in having a few good friends, rather than a lot of trivial friends.. That said though, nothing wrong with having a lot of good friends either, but getting them is another matter entirely.

On your comment about having an empty forum.. Well, forums don't fill up overnight. You'll need to have something popular attached to the forums if you expect to gain members, like an interesting website.. and I don't just mean a "hey neat" interesting, but something genuinely catching that makes people want to come back later. You have that, and you'll get people slowly trickling into the forums and a community will (slowly) blossom from there.. Really though, forums like these are very hit and miss, they either work out or they don't.. not much to be said there.

As for your Guild Wars comment.. although I've never played it, my suggestion would be to socialize. Online games like that are built around being social, and a lot of times you need to make the first step in order to get anywhere. Just get to know people and it should all work out from there on its own.

Having something that caught people interests helps a lot.

I mean, very few would join a forum for social reasons. Most of the time, it's because of the forum offers something that interests the person.

Hey, I've joined forums for social reasons. Sometimes I register or stay at a board because of the people and have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the subject of the board, only posting in the "general discussion" type forums.

irc.esper.net, #rohmacking.

And re: questions... just find a group of people that have a common interest. That's how Acmlm's Board was originally built; everyone (well, most) was interested in Acmlm's hacks or ROM hacking in general, and it just snowballed from there.

I have a hundred or so, but if I cleaned out the people I never talk to, haven't seen in years, don't even remember who they are etc I'd have a lot less.

Do what you've done here: Join communities, talk to people, make friends! It really is that easy.

I used to have a message board but it got covered in so much dust that I think it collapsed. This is probably the most active (and best) board I will ever find.

I suppose one thing is the lack of relevant topics to discuss. Who else besides me would know the in-universe history of most of my characters for instance? Or the storyline in the RPG Maker game I'm working on which isn't even released yet? Exactly.

But, I'm aware of it. Which is why for instance ROM hacking is also a major topic on my pages. At least that may be able to draw some conversation. After all, the wiki page on the SMW hack has a downloadable demo patch. I managed to get onto #rohmacking, so I'm there as I post this.

Something else is my legitimate lack of talent in just about everything. I'm skilled at designing SMW levels somewhat, though can't do the overworld at all. Then again... I am disabled according to whatever mysterious criteria the federal government uses. Of course, they aren't by any stretch 'trustworthy'. It's little known that I'm intensely anti-government.

Hey, it feels good to vent like this. People get to know more about me, and I can talk about such things without being off-topic or a troll.

I started out just talking online to people I know IRL, but eventually I got to know people on message boards. FOR EXAMPLE, I met YD at another forum, got to know her, and she brought me here. When I spent time here, I got to know a ton of kickass people that I now talk to regularly. IRC is also a good way of talking to people, and if you find someone that you can actually carry on conversations with, add them to AIM or MSN, whatever it is you use. I have about 100 buddies on AIM, but I only regularly talk to about 10 of them... the rest are folks that I only talk to every once in a while.

Just get to know people around here, it's a good start. And you'll find that there are a lot of great people that hang out here

Just like you make real life friends: Either you wait for them to come to you (In which case, unless you are inherently and visibly interesting, you will have no friends), or you introduce yourself to all sorts of people in hopes of meeting new people.

It's doubly easy on the internet, because if for some reason you and another person clash you can basically block out their entire existence from your own world.
