So I'm working on a casemod for this spare Wii motherboard to raise a bit of money for myself. The original casing broke, as did the DVD drive. So far I've spent about $45 on legos for this, as well as another $10 for a de-soldering iron. The majority of the legos I have are still in my unused bucket, so I'm keeping a lot of the stuff I bought already.

So, here's what I have so far.

Used a 32x32 base board which will be cut down to size when finished. Will likely remove some of the plain clear bricks in favor of some orange flat singles, because I hope to be able to use these for internal lighting. They should fluoresce like a mofo in there. I'd also want to use some LED's to replace the ones found inside the DVD slot.

Heatsink hood removed. I'm going to revise the front of the hood portion to allow for better air flow, as well as enhance the aesthetics a bit.

Here are some of my concerns. First, I can't reach any of the buttons. I'll have to create a way to access them, perhaps by making a small switch bar that is hand-wired and soldered to the original switches. There's four total. Secondly, I'd need to make sure that there isn't too much overhead power loss from the cathode inverters, which draw ~3.7 watts. I should be okay there since there isn't a DVD drive at all. Thirdly, since the lamps are UV, I'm concerned that the light might mess with the IC's. It seems like it should be OK though, since they're meant to go inside PC's. Most of these sound like minor issues anyway, so we'll see how it goes.

Questions, comments, or suggestions? I'd love to hear them!

I feel like I should say something like, "this is utterly fantastic" but I just don't feel like it would do this any justice. Seriously though, this is pretty darn sweet.

I think this is totally awesome, however, I would do it in complete clear legos, (If I had the know how, and the parts,) because I think it would be awesome to have a see through case,,, plus with legos? How can you go wrong.

I seriously would love to see where this goes.

clear legos
That's what I wanted to do; but if I did that then it would turn out to be way more expensive. I actually got these legos from a Lego Store where you just grab a bunch and put it in a container. I had to get what they had available, and most of them weren't translucent.

Are you going to glue the legos together? If not, you could replace them over time.

Oh, any idea how much heat lego pieces can take? That's something to consider when it comes to electronics.

I don't think they provide shielding so someone owning this would have to be careful with not have anything near that is sensitive to interference.

This is a nice looking project. Depending on the audience you plan to sell it to, you could possibly drum up more interest by leaving a pad on the top, allowing other legos to be affixed to it.
