While the editour hasn't reached its perfection yet, we can still start to collect various ideas for our future projects.
Since I started this thread in this new subforum, I will be the first to introduce my idea. This one is for to improve SoM.

Geshtar's Invasion:
Opon return from Gaia's Naval the overworld's enemies are now replaced with soldiers of the imperial army. They come in four variations as they will wear different weapons.
- Sword and shield
- Spear
- Bow and Knife
- Axe

Those soldiers will patrol the area and if they spot you, they will call the other soldiers in the area in order to fight you on equal terms 3 vs 3. If you go down, you will awaken in the jail of the Water Temple, but to that later.
If you defeat them they will run away or if you prefer realism, they collapse to the ground and disappear as they die.
Villages and cities will be occupied in the country, including Poto Village.

As you defeat the soldiers in the villages/cities, the empire will retreat from the areas you fought them. You will be praised by the occupants as heros if you do so, even those of Poto Village as they will also apologize to you and forgive what happened at the start of the game.

As a result the banning will be lifted and opens a new dungeon. You can reenter later in the game the cave of the first boss, which now has a new entrance inside.

The water temple will have now a greater dungeon and as the main entrance will be sealed you have to enter Undine's Cave to get inside.
From the cave to the temple you will encounter Potos (Seiken Densetsu 3 appearance) and other monsters.

Reaching the temple interior, you will first pass through the jail, were many innocent people are taken prison. Freeing them will reward you with a saving point with HP, MP and Status restoration.
If you were taken prisoner before you freed the others, your weapons and the seed of water will be taken from you and you will have to depend on Poipoi's magics (the sprite) and your bare hands to attack enemies (strength determes your attack power), until you get your weapons and the seed back which are guarded by the soldiers. To note, these soldiers are weaker then the normal ones.

To get out of the jail first, Purim (the girl) will seduce the prison warder to get the keys for to free themselves and the others.

After the jail you will enter the main dungeon of the water temple. You will eventually come out in the first room of the temple. From there you can unseal the main entrance to prepare yourself for the encounter with Geshtar.

---
That is all for now.

/Wii

I have never played this game for more than the first beginning village (right after the bug fight). But me and lots of other people always see the main character and think of Chrono Trigger... I'd be surprised if no one tried to put Crono in the game one day and make something built around him... :p

It's a really good game, you should play it sometime (it's even 3 player if you have people to play with).

Okay next idea.

What I always wanted to do for SoM was to give the big bad Thanatos (Not me) a second chance to make him to the True Final Boss.

Those who have played through Seiken Densetsu 3 aka Secret of Mana 2 faced one of the three possible Big Bads as the final boss.
The last battles against them were very atmospheric and the tension of the battle gave me the impression that I have to give everything in it.

My plan is it to recreate such a atmospheric final boss battle with Thanatos, right after the battle against the anticlimatic final boss battle against the Mana Beast.

Thanatos Ex Machina

First part (With music):
The moment the Mana Biest is about to turn into snow, uncountable wires appears suddenly from the Mana Fortress and pierce it until it disappears under the mass of wires.
The wires form and melt together into a humanoid but gigantic form which resembles mechanic, cyborglike statue with crossed arms and a lowered horned head with closed eyes. While the head, arms and torso are clearly visible, the abdomen is the Mana Fortress itself.

Thanatos starts to speak and thanks first Randi, Purim and Popoi to gave him the idea to make the Mana Fortress itself his new body and that they got rid the Mana Beast for him.
The power of the Mana Beast gave him enough power to transform and to evolve into a being, which is as powerful as the Mana Goddess was in her prime time.
He is now able to conquer and to recreate not only the world but the universe as well. He disposes the three with a swift move.

The Mana Sword rises to the air and resurrect the three. After the talking of hope and the latter like it happened in Seiken Densetsu 3, the last battle commences.

Second part (With music):

As the battle starts, eight large wires or rather tentacles grow out of Thanatos's back, which have thornlike endings. In any of those thorns is a spheric crystal embedded.
Each crystal represent a mana elemental and at the beginning all eight are colourless. While his body is grey in colour, his body is covered in black lines on which energy pulsates in a blue colour in order to make him look more artifical.

He attacks with his eyes and his tentacles in this form.
When he changes his colours, he switches to a mana element. The associated crystal will glow with the colour. As he gains the strenghts of the element, he will be more vulnerable to the opposite. Only one crystal glows at the same time.

After he receives enough damage he will change his form one last time.

Third and final part (With music):

In this form he will unfold his arms and use them against you. The tentacles are replaced with two large wings, his torso bears the eight spheres combined in one crystal. His head is rised, his horns grow larger and red, long, flaming hair grows out of his head.
He switches no longer to one element, as he uses them all now at once.

When he dies he will utter his last lines, after exploding to nothingness like the final bosses of Seiken Densetsu 3.

I will design the boss, only if Masterflow or someone else with his skill and above requests it from me.
I don't like to waste to work for something which is not used in the end.

I'd love to see a well balanced boss gauntlet for this game - it has so many bosses and they're really the best part of the game to play...powerful bosses contending with your awesome equipment and maxed out spells.

Maybe I'll do it myself

What he said.....that being said...make it happen. Even the chick looks like Marle and the sprite could be Frog.

A few ideas.

Increasing the game's longevity - I think increasing the amount of time needed to level up substantially (for each level), would obviously accomplish this. I'd also like to add a new big playeable continent in, with dungeons, enemies and bosses. This could include the Scorpion Kingdom, where the Scorpion Army come from. I think enemy damage should be increased a bit to make the game more challenging.

I like the Geshtar invasion idea and Thanatos, in that I think the bad guys get short changed in Secret of Mana. I think the Mana Beast should stay as the main enemy, but that the Boss fights in general should be improved.

I think the dialogue could be considerably improved throughout the game. I'd also like to add more reasons to revisit areas. The Geshtar invasion does this, but just little things like people commenting stuff to you after major events would help to make the world come alive. I love writing and the first thing I'm going to work on for the game is improved dialogue with more humour and character.

Some game areas could stand to be improved and expanded upon. The dungeons, especially, should be made more 'zelda-like', and have puzzle elements as well as just enemies. I would go so far as to add Dungeon Maps (which would work indoors like the World Map outside), Locked Doors and Keys, in an attempt to improve the experience.

I think the ending should be changed to be more upbeat - along the lines of Chrono Trigger. It should let you travel around the world without the Mana Fortress after you've finished the game and see the various people comment on what's happened and be happy and safe.

Just to give this thread a little bump, I was always a little disappointed with "Sword of Mana" and thought an SD1 (Final Fantasy Adventure) remake in the SOM engine might be an interesting idea.

Not sure who I'd use as P2 and P3 though; SD1 swaps out P2s pretty frequently... I don't think any of them make sense to keep around for the length of the game without some story rewriting. Maybe I could have a way to swap in and out P2 sprite sets.

Hello !

I have this idea since a LONG time but I really don't know how to do it with RomHacking.

The idea is to remove the pause mode when players open the Ring Menu.
The battle rhythm would be improved !

Thanks.

I would expect severe slowdowns at least. Furthermore, as there would be even more sprites in the same row with the hero, the possibility for sprite-flickering would increase. And I don't know if this would reach the sprite limit on three on three battles...

Anyway. Probably the slowdowns could be worked out / worked around if you write a SA-1-chip support. But that would make playing these things on real hardware almost impossible. There are no flashcarts that support SA-1 to my knowledge, and for a repro, you'd have to sacrifice a Yoshi's Island or Super Mario RPG (or, you get a Derby Jockey 2 from some import shop, that would surely be not a loss to mankind; full list of SA-1-supporting games here, if you're interested in this )...

Next thing would be:
How about the shading? When you call the ring menu, the whole screen turns gray. If you keep it, the other players would get problems to distinguish the enemies from the background. If you turn it off, you cannot distinguish the ring menu icons properly.

So I'ld rather say: "Naaah, rather try to turn down the loading time of Seiken Densetsu 3's menu instead".

Yeh it might add slowdows...
If we don't change the fact that only one player can open his Menu, it won't be a mess with all the Rings.

It's quit easy now (even for me) to change the menus colors and icons. So I think that we can handle the background gray.

Anyway, I don't have the skill to do this hack.
But for me it's the best we can do to improve the multiplayer mode.

The BG-Gray should be removed easily, compared with the other stuff. Guess it's some kind of HDMA-Color-Math-bla that can be turned off.

I don't know if it would be such an improvement, guess would be pretty annoying if a rabite kills me because I'm not fast enough to get a candy before it jumps into me, but that's a matter of taste.

Yeah of course I mean it for multiplayer game.
Just like FF Crystal Chronicle Multimode, for me it's the best ARgp Battle system.

That's something I've thought about as a solution to being able to "chain-cast" to pretty much wipe out any boss without really fighting it. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but I would guess that doing both sets of processing every frame might indeed slow things down a bit. We'll see!

well, this would require massive ammounts of work, and maybe it could be done if someone just puts likes 265265026502965 years of its life working on the final version of the editor...

a game for Jema, Serin and Randy's mother.

The map could be nearly the same thing. The story and the placing of the mobs and bosses would need to be different.

When this SoM is done, I think I'd like to work on a project that expands the game to what it would have become if on the SNES CD.

Although there aren't many references around today, there are still some around for eg. -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8ObmJ0x4_A
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSWYkRJRSs4
http://www.unseen64.net/2008/06/08/secret-of-mana-snes-beta/

There are also some areas in the map that don't exist in the original game, I would like to add those back into the game as best as possible. It would have to integrate into the game to make it seem as legit as possible.

I think I'll make a thread about this.
