Hi! This board is for discussion, hacks, and notes related to the Secret of Mana Editor. This is an editor still in development, so releases and bugfixes will be posted here as they happen.

The Secret of Mana Editor is an all-around editor for the multi-player SNES RPG Secret of Mana. I hope to develop this thing into somewhat of an RPG-maker-like tool that is capable of editing most aspects of the game. Hopefully this thing eventually generates some new multi-player SNES games for SNES enthusiasts and their friends to play online together.

Here is some info and history if you are curious about this editor:

http://somedit.blogspot.com - Secret of Mana Editor development blog. Significant developments and release notices are posted here.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19968993/som/FileListing.html Dropbox hosting for Secret of Mana Editor files. All builds, an updated revision history, and other info will be posted here.

http://acmlm.kafuka.org/board/thread.php?id=7186 Original thread about the editor posted in Releases section. Included screenshots and some basic info.

http://somedit.proboards.com Original message board set up for the editor. This should no longer be used for discussion, but I will continue using it as a bug tracking system, so feel free to check out whether the bug you found has been documented.

The editor is still in a very preliminary stage and many things do not work! Before asking why something doesn't work, please check other threads, the blog, or the bug listing to see if your problem is a known bug or something that hasn't been implemented yet.

Also, if you so desire, you may contact me personally about specifics, helping out, or with questions; however, posting here is generally preferred so that others with similar questions may see them answered.

To keep updated on builds, I'd recommend following the blog, as I'll post notices of new builds there for now.

I'm not sure where you want bug reports dumped, but I got this one when I first ran the program.

01:17:09 - System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not find file 'C:\Users\Brian\Desktop\SOMEdit\someditConfig.properties'.
File name: 'C:\Users\Brian\Desktop\SOMEdit\someditConfig.properties'

at System.IO.FileStream..ctor(String path, FileMode mode)

Is there any research you still need done?

Thanks - I fixed that for the next build.

There are things here and there that need research done still. One in particular is decompression of the title screen background - the image of the mana tree with the three characters. I haven't had much luck figuring that one out yet.

It makes me happy to see this board here. All of your hard work is finally getting off the ground. Maybe someday soon we'll see a dedicated fan board for the editor and Mana hacking in general to sit amongst the likes of SMWcentral and that Metroid hacking board.

Now, if only MathOnNapkins could finish BlackMagic...

He was working on an ALttP editor to compensate for all of Hyrule Magic's shortcomings, if memory serves right.

Apart from that, I don't think that the likes of SMWC are actually a particularly good idea... sharing platforms encourages the sharing of ideas and mutual exploration, and my brief excursions to SMWC always revealed plenty of deeper technical questions being considered "hard" and remaining unanswered over there that could easily have been answered by many members of other games' hacking communities.

That's one way of looking at it. But it sure is nice to have everything for one game (patches, sprites, music, etc.) all sectionalized and compiled in one place. The situations with the forum side of SMWC are another story, though.

And, yes, Black magic was supposed to be an editor that would have made Zelda hacking much more enjoyable rather than wrestling with the frustration that is Hyrule Magic.

A question Moppy. When you are done with the editor, is it possible for us to export Seiken Densetsu 3 features into the game, like spells and class changes?

I didn't have any plans to import resources from other games--particularly SD3, given that nearly everything is compressed.

You could, however, re-design them from scratch/screenshots.

As for class changing, I'm not sure how well that would work as an automated, customizable feature. I've been trying to think of a good way for more complex things like this to be do-able with an editor. For now, I have a list of pre-defined hacks that do more complex things, like bug-fixes in their code. For now, these are hardcoded, but I suppose it would be possible to script/import them if you knew where to make your changes.

The project is always on, it's just not always.. active. :3

Apologies for the spans of silence, as it tends to happen with me. I get distracted easily.

SOM things will probably pick up soon, as other things in my life are cooling down a bit for a while.

The project is very interesting and no other editor had me this interested in anything other than LM in quite awhile. Glad to see that you still around. Yeah, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do so get in there and tell life who's the boss and have fun while making the most of it. College being over for me sure made it easier to work on my projects.

I just found this editor and I think it's absolutely amazing. I'm working at the moment (well, allegedly) so I don't have time to try it out, but I'm going to try to use it to make a birthday present for someone who loves this game. So thanks, I'll be checking these forums/the blog regularly to see how the project progresses. A few questions if anyone has time

I've never played the game on anything other than the SNES - I assume it's still 2 player? I have some usb game controllers, so if I plugged them into the laptop, they'd work like the SNES, presumably? If this works well I'm planning to buy an adaptor to make my laptop feed come out of my HD TV, and that way it'd be the same as playing 2 player on the SNES. Any reason this wouldn't work?

I'd like to change the dialogue, increase the game difficulty (damage enemies deal you with attacks, and the amount of exp needed to level up) and change weapon names. Any problem with any of that?

I plan to add in a new continent to the world map, complete with importing new graphics, new dialogue, new events and new enemies. I understand enemy AI isn't in the game yet, but presumably I could put alternative graphics with existing enemy AI and new stats and that'd be fine? For example, I could add a Black Lullabud and make its attacks more powerful.

Finally, do you need much knowledge of coding to use the editor, or is it on a par with something like GameMaker?

I will obviously try to download the editor soon and work out what I can from there, but I'd like to have a general idea of how everything works first, so I figured I'll just ask here. If anyone has free time I'd appreciate any of my questions answered. Many thanks,

lytron

Hello board!

Is it just me, my computer and/or my ROM, or is it not possible to load and save with the editor at the moment?

hi man and welcome to the community.

in order to do it, you need to SAVE the changes you did in the game and then EXPORT it to the rom.

to test if it worked, load the rom in the emulator and check the changes you made.

Hey Otrebla2!

It's weird. I thought I wrote a second message here yesterday... possibly you prevent doubleposts here or so.

I saved it, I made another mistake: I didn't use the US-ROM. I can load the German ROM, yet the program's titlebar still states that No Project is loaded. I can save the project (no reaction of the program in any way), close it, but I can't load the project. The program simply does nothing when I choose one of these projects; of course, they are not listed on the Recent-Projects-List, too.

Now that I use the US-ROM everything's fine.

When I removed half of a song's channel's notes (in a German-ROM-Project), saved it and left the program, I could not load it, but the SOM-file has grown for about 20kb. So it *kinda* saves.

It's an interesting behaviour, but it's nothing that has to be fixed very soon. There are plenty more other features that are more important, and the official German translation is somewhat infamous by the way, so it's better for everyone if the German hackers use the English ROM.

Besides from that, is there any documentary or tutorial to this program? I know how I can edit songs and maps, but I don't get how to distinguish which door on the map is which, where it leads and how to edit it, for example.

hi lytron and sorry for the late reply.

there are no tutorials or documentation that ive heard of so far. i havent played with the doors or anything like that, only maps, tiles and music.

also... warum ist die deutsches ubersetzung berüchtigt?

...

ich weiss!!!!! es wurde von jemand mit meiner deutches fahigkeit gemacht

im learning, so dont bother if it makes no sense hehehehe

(for non german speakers like me hehe... i tried to say "why is the german translation infamous? i know!!! because it was made by someone who has my german speaking capabilities")

Wowy. Du lernst deutsch? Cool.

The German Translator, Claude M. Moyse, "took some liberties" in translating it.

The blacksmith in SoM is called "Berti", for example, in relation to the national soccer team trainer Berti Vogts. Why did Moyse change the name? Well, because, eh, soccer was and is kinda popular in Germany.
Why do the Goblins leave when the Hero is in the big pot? They go to watch "Lindenstraße", a German soap opera. No goblin dance at all.
Furthermore, there are quite alot of insider jokes and bad puns throughout the game. Everywhere you are welcomed with "Holerö", some greeting he forced to make it public through tons of appearances in all of his translations and his work for the Club Nintendo magazine (Germany's "Nintendo Power").

If I could isolate the changes he made, and get permission from him to use it as an automated hack, then yes, definitely. It's not really something I want to write from scratch since someone's already done it. It hasn't been top priority though.
