So I haven't dealt with an airliner via the normal means (free flights due to being employed by an airliner prior to my current job) but I am planning a trip to Phoenix, AZ from Salt Lake City, UT. I'll be leaving 12/24 and coming back 12/31. I am just unfamiliar with how it all works, so I'm turning to board2 denizens who have flown before.

So, I'm getting ready to purchase an airfare rather soon for the itinerary I specified and wanted to be absolutely sure I will be satisfied. What is your favorite airliner? Any good/bad experiences you'd like to share?

Unfortunately, I don't think I know any airliners operating on that route. The only general piece of advice I can give you apart from double-checking your luggage for weight and contents is to be at the airport with a sufficient margin of time before departure. You rarely get more than an hour between check-in closure and the flight leaving, and that does mean that if you arrive 10 minutes before it closes, there is a long queue and you get to a desk 1 minute after it does, they will not let you in. If it is your first flight, seeing to it that you are at the airport something the scheduled departure time minus 2 hours seems sensible to me.

I think that's definitely sound advice. I won't be bringing much with me, so I doubt I'd have more than what would fit under the seat in front of me.

I also think it's going to be insane given it's Christmas Eve and a ton of people will be flying.

You should double-check your airline's cabin luggage restrictions. Sometimes, they can be quite stringent - e.g. the 5kg (~10lbs?) limit on my flight to Canada. A simple "it's not going to be a lot anyway" won't always cut it.

I think all your major airlines end up feeling about the same. I'll be flying out to Vegas in late October/early November.

How much are you looking at for a round trip flight? My airfare looks like it's going to be about $400+.

I've looked and looked, and the lowest I've found is about $267 after taxes. And I will only be carrying a small bag for carry on. Nothing large. (Will adjust packing accordingly if what guidelines online read differently, as blackhole suggests they might be more strict than I perceive)

Not really, since I'm not planning on bringing my bedroom with me. I'm not taking my computer, toiletries, DS, or anything like that. I'm bringing my phone, a charger, a couple changes of clothes, an extra pair of shoes, and if possible a couple of small gifts for Christmas. And I've just checked: I'll have a dimensions limit of 22" x 14" x 9" and a 40lb weight limit. More than enough for me.
