I've got a cold of some sort. It really sucks too. Cough, sneeze, congestion, blocked ears, all out feeling crappy. But I don't even care about that anymore. What I really am upset about is that I won't be able to go with my school orchestra to Florida from Thursday to Sunday. I've been looking forward to this trip for the whole school year and now because of the medicine cycle I have to be on, I can't go! I'm really bummed out right now...

What the hell?

Screw your medicine, just go. Headcolds only last for a few days anyway.

Colds are nothing. They're just annoying, but nothing fatal. Some of the symptoms will pass while you're in Florida. Unless you're some crazy germophobe, you should be able to go.

Why don't you just take Robitussin or something...?

This doesn't sound like an ordinary cold, and it may include complications that require something more hardcore than Robitussin. I had some major upper respiratory ailment in seventh grade. It led to awful wheezing that necessitated prescription bronchodilators.

I don't get it... colds are pretty common. Just suck it up and go, buy some medicine when you get there. Not going on a field trip like that because you're sneezing is... stupid.

Yeah, you should go anyway. I was just joking about the "there's always next year" part.

Your cold will probably clear up quickly

That sucks to hear. But like everyone else has said I would have to agree to just forget the medicine and go. Half the time when I get a cold I don't even go to the doctors or take medicine. One time I won a round of Lazer Quest while I had a really bad fever and I eventually got over my fever.

That, I disagree with: Not going to a doctor for something like a fever is a dumb idea. Fevers can be very serious...

I did go to the doctor for the fever. It's just that even though I had it I still played Lazer Quest.

There might not be a "next year." My school band goes to Florida once every four years and does smaller trips the other three. I would have hated it if I had missed our trip. I hope you'll find some way to be able to go.

I'm really hoping I can still go. I went to the doctor and he gave me Azithromacin, an antibiotic (of course!). It's only a five day regimen and I started today so I'd finish the medicine by Thursday. I really should be able to go. I think I'll talk more with my mom and dad about it because it would really suck not to go this year. Last year, I didn't go to New York with the school (but that was due to the cost. $500 for two days? Not worth it.).

What you have just sounds like a standard cold, not the flu... and you didn't mention a fever. What's the point of antibiotics? Over-the-counter medicine will give you the same results. I never understood why people go to the doctor when they catch a simple cold... it seems like a waste to me.

I tried over-the counter and none of it seemed to make me feel much better. At least the antibiotics are working and all I feel now is a partially drippy nose.

I would historically stay home if I had any vestige of a cold, but in my HS days I'd take ANY excuse to avoid school, which was hell. Now, I'm the opposite and generally go to class and work if I have a cold, but I rarely get them anymore.

Well, some people do feel like utter crap when they get a cold. I know some people who shrug them off and continue doing what they're doing, and some people who just can't do a damn thing when they catch one.

Everyone should take Cold-FX or something along those lines. To PREVENT getting colds/flu, of course.

I've survived 104 degrees before without going to the doctor. In fact, I roleplayed while I had them!

...But I'm crazy.

WHY are doctors still prescribing antibiotics for colds, which are clearly caused by VIRII? It's this kind of bone-headed crap that makes serious bacterial infections more resistant to drugs!

The only 100% effective cure for the common cold is TIME. Just get some rest and keep yourself well-nourished, because there's literally nothing else you can do.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

but seriously, colds make you feel like shit. but if you really wanted to do something, you would do it even though you felt like shit.

as for going to the doctor over a fever, I've never done that in my life, don't think I ever would.

Uh, fevers can be a precursor or a symptom to something MUCH more serious.
