I finally feel like this hack has progressed enough to pass on to another forum. Still technically in WIP status, but with so much done to it already that it shouldn't deter you from giving it a shot. Feedback encouraged, enjoyment required.

Edit 4/23/2014: version 0.7 released.

Oh my.

I've wondered about the idea for quite some time. I downloaded it and played up to red (yellow?) brinstar and I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. I love how you changed the flow of speed of things throughout the game.

What I didn't find all that great though was how certain paths have been blocked. I tried to mockball to get the early super missile and there's a double fall block preventing me from doing so. I imagine you did this to force the player to fight spore spawn, because you obviously did some good fucking work on that, and you'd want the player to appreciate it. It's not that big of a deal to me, but I really prefer to complete the *original* Super Metroid my way. For you to claim that there's been no edits to the routes is false. Since I've only played so far, I don't know if there are any more as of yet.

On the flipside, I seriously would prefer this over the original any day and would happily deal with a simple route change to enjoy what has been presented in this thread.

Also, when you finish this hack, what are you planning to do next? I think it would be a great idea if you were to move the items around in all new places. Keep the routes the same, but allow for new routes alongside the old ones. Block off some of the old corridors that lead to items to confuse the players and create new ones elsewhere.

I've done this before in an attempt to confuse the hell outta one of my cousins. He was the only other elitist SM player I knew who could 100% the game. I even made new rooms that connect from original rooms that have new secret pathways and corridors. It never got past the initial stages of design, though. I originally intended on making it available for play on an original console, disguised as a normal SM cartridge. That way my cousin will pop in "Super Metroid" and go and get the morph ball and go WHAT THE FUCK and then fall over and foam at the mouth.

Which brings me to my next inquiry... I never really figured out how to hack a donor cartridge and burn an eprom. I know there's a way, but I'm not really in touch with the community that does that sort of thing. I don't really want to buy a Super PowerPak to play this on the original console. I think this hack is worthy of being put onto cartridges, and the parts/services required I'd happily pay for. So my question is, could we somehow work out a less-than-complicated method for allowing those who want this hack to get a hold of a tangible cartridge with this hack on it?

Yeah, I suppose you're right about the double crumble block technically being a level edit. It's still quite possible to nab the early super missiles/reserve tank past that point. It just requires more coordination. Specifically, running across most of the crumble bridge, jumping and initiating mockball on the sold tile that the gate touches down on when it goes all the way down. You're right though, that was a measure taken to ensure that Spore Spawn is harder to bypass. Unless my memory fails me, I think that's the only non-aesthetic edit I've made to a room.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head your whole post, right down to my plans for the hack after it's done. Once the rehash is finished, I'll be starting on "Project Base Extended Version" which will be the finished product + as many new rooms, extra item pick-ups, new items and new enemies that can fit for the longest game possible. Maybe a massive expansion to Ceres and a whole new area if that can be done.

Really, I don't blame you for doing that. It's more of a gripe and doesn't really matter, especially when you compare it to what has been accomplished.

Just to put it into perspective of just how awesome this hack is, let me put it this way:
When I landed on Crateria, I just about shit my pants. Seriously, a few minutes in I thought I was just gonna start crying.

But seriously, if you're going to do that item hack thing, please don't make it backtrack-heavy. Just the right balance of amount of backtracking versus proximity to the old items' locations is key with this one. Otherwise, I'd just get bored.

Still though, good fucking work. I'll be watching this like a hawk.

Also, if you need any level design help contribution, let me know.

Okay, I gave it a shot. Some observations from the beginning:

  • You removed the blue fog effect. Why? This seems more like a deterioration than an improvement.
  • Possible shot frequency went up? I can imagine this making the game quite a bit easier in several locations...
  • The door at the first battle site with Ridley became breakable, and in fact quite easy to break by accident. If you leave through it, the self-destruct sequence doesn't trigger, but reentering through it leaves an empty room with nothing in it. If you walk back all the way, the entrance shaft will start tilting as in the self-destruct scenario and leaving will make things proceed as usual without you ever having fought out the battle. Pretty sure this is a bug.

More:
  • Lots of the changes seem to be more of a "mod" than really an "improvement"; working on their own, but "different" rather than "better".
  • The platforms in the shaft leading up to Brinstar are barely visible. Argh!
  • The area at the bottom does look better, though.
  • It seems like the general theme is to make the game more dark and grim. So far, that seems to be more or less working out nicely.
  • The machinegunned shots do make things a lot easier; in particular, it becomes easier to just indiscriminately spray the wall with bullets until you hit.
  • Most palette edits are good, but I positively liked the falling leaves part of Brinstar more with the "perpetually-withering forest" look it had originally than as the ectoplasma-covered grotto it seems to have been turned into.

There are certain things with this hack that make the game play faster. Most of us who played the original Super Metroid and are looking for something new also probably wanted at some point to speed certain things up. "Yeah, yeah, it's a fucking elevator, WE KNOW JUST HURRY THE FUCK UP" and "I don't care about the fanfare music just give me the shit and let me play the damn game" are two good examples. Ceres was probably no different. I, for one, use the game genie code that bypasses the Ceres scene altogether. I imagine all this was done on purpose.

Other changes increase Samus' agility, doors open faster, Samus doesn't lose velocity when landing on a surface, and a bunch of other stuff. All to make the game play faster and much more smooth.

I really wish the Phantoon fight lasted longer as it is right now. I had so much fun with it. It went from the boss I disliked much in the original SM to the favorite in PB.

Leaving the initial Ridley battle still seems like a bug, consider at the very least the then-unexplained tilting and explosion of the space station.

- I never really liked the blue haze in Ceres. The way it stays in place despite camera scrolling is an eyesore for me. I removed it for that reason, and to better show off Ceres' new palettes. Maybe in the future if someone hacks the blue haze to look cooler or something I'll put it back in.

- All beams (and missiles) can be fired more quickly. This was done to balance out other aspects that made the game more difficult, such as faster enemy animations, harder boss fights, etc. I haven't decided yet if I want to further offset faster beams by tinkering with normal enemy damage/HP.

- Ceres is actually incomplete right now, hence the oddities you experienced with it. When it's done, the elevator room won't tilt while 'escaping' (the escape timer was removed on purpose, and the whole sequence was made to be more ominous and calm). Also, Ceres won't explode when Samus flies away from it. I know there's no purpose in making this change, but it's one of those things I want to do so people playing through it for the first time will be like "Oh, wow. Neat."

- Haha, I actually fixed those barely-visible red platforms in the Crateria shaft last night, so that won't be an issue anymore whenever the next release is done (which is still a long way off).

- Making the hack more dark and grim was the initial idea, but over time all of the dark palettes started to bug me (not to mention it was hard to see some things when I played it on the TV with lights on. Not good for a hack that aims to please console users) . I'll be reworking most palettes in the game to make everything more vibrant and colorful. Shouldn't take very long to do all of that since most of the editing will consist of just increasing the R/G/B for each color.

- The falling spores in Brinstar will be fixed whenever I get around to going over all of the FX1 palette blends. I haven't done much with those yet.

Ceres was probably no different.

Ceres is very very different in PB. You should totally check it out.

Thanks for playing the hack, dudes. This is some good feedback. Please keep it comin', and tell others about this hack if you know someone else who likes Super Metroid. I'm trying to make the finished product as polished and solid as possible, so any flaw you spot, big or pitifully small should be noted.

Something else you guys should know, if not already. A new move has been added to the game. I don't know how useful it will be for casual play, but speed runners will definitely be able to make use:

Damage boosting can be initiated at any time by crouching, holding the run button, then pressing jump + holding the opposite direction that Samus is facing. This allows the player to quickly vault backwards over a considerable distance.

Also, spinning jumps can be performed while standing still by holding the run button, and shinesparks (any direction, ground or air) are much easier to do.

I meant that the reason you changed Ceres was probably the same as the reason you changed the elevators and doors etc to work faster.

So what else do you plan on changing? I'd imagine you'd want to change the structure of some rooms like you did with some of the elevator rooms.

Also, I'm not really fond of the ice beam palette... I also don't know what the hell Samus is shooting when she fires her hyper beam.

So, Grime, So far is it only Palette Changes or is there minor level changes? I really wish for you to have this done with some different level design. Would it be possible to make a new room and make it and put a picture of it to show what your capable of? Although...You did win RotW on MetConst a few times, The full hack was put away. That disappoints me. Ahh well. Hopefully you'll get some time on your hands to start it up again. I really wanna see what this Blitz is all about.

Hey Grime, this hack is awesome. I'm digging all the work you've done, really cool stuff. A very nice companion to the original. In fact, I prefer this over the original to be honest. I never knew Super Metroid could look so good. But with all the recent hacks such as Ice Metal, and now this... I'm reminded of what a beauty this game was, and still is.

By the way, you know me as Riffman81 over at metconst. I believe KP9000 mentioned in an earlier post about maybe getting a SNES cart built for this. Since I have built carts for SM: Redesign, Ice Metal, Eris, and Stardust. would it be cool to test this hack on real hardware? Or should I wait to build a cart when the final release is made? Would love to add this to my collection.

I'd say wait until there's a final release. There are still a few small quirks in it (mainly the ones mentioned above).

I'd think it'd be better if Grime just told us, via IRC or something, then we wouldn't need to wait a few hours, or even days after release.

Grime! Your hack is totally insane awesome! I got early Spring Ball. I got 55% items collection. 8 energy. 130 missile. 15 or 20 Super Missile. 10 Power Bomb. Early Grapples Beam. Time finish 1:18. I will try speed run someday. Do you have other hack like this hack?

I have two other hacks. They're well made but pretty small. Temporus has some tiny bugs, but most people won't notice them.

Temporus (7 rooms)

Hallow Eve (1 room)
