Hello. I'm here today because I am looking for some help patching this one Japanese hack that's I've been looking to try for a while.

It's called "Super Mario Evolution 2" (also known as Mario Evolution True 2), and is a sequel to a SMB hack that has a Yoshi's Island feel to it. Last month, I downloaded the .izh file from the hack's site (on the bottom-right of the page) and immediately patched the .ips file (using MultiPatch on Macintosh) with a ROM of SMB. The ROM afterwards once patched with the hack wouldn't load. It would stay at a black screen. I tried importing the ips and ROM to a Windows computer and used LunarIPS on there, but still I was met with no luck.

Would someone be able to help me figure out what I'm supposed to do to get this hack fully running?

Superjustinbros, always try and find .IPS patches. use this IPS patch:

http://acmlm.kafuka.org/uploader/get.php?id=3703

The creator of this hack and a bunch of others is located somewhere, but since it's been nearly a year since I discovered them, I can't remember. I will report back to you if I find them.

Okay - apparently, the owner changed websites.

EDIT: Use an extracting program to extract the .LZH file (which I'm unable to do due to limited amounts of time). Also, I uploaded the first hack - not the second.

Well I can extract the .LZH file, but afterwards alongside the .ips file, there is also a .bat file and a .exe file.

BAT files are just files that tell the computer to do certain things, rather than you do them yourself. You should open up a text editor, and look what's in the BAT file.

It's probably just doing something you'd do anyway. Most times BAT files included with things, are just simplifying it for the (windows) user. But, I personally don't trust BAT files, lest I look at them first.

My assumption is it'll open the EXE file, and that'll apply the IPS. My guess at least.

I took a look at the BAT file, and inside it said:

"SME2.exe smb1.nes patchme.nes"

So afterwards, I duplicated the SMB1 ROM and titled one "smb1.nes" and the other "patchme.nes", then afterwards ran the BAT file. It patched the "patchme.nes" ROM, but it instead made the original SMB1 very glitchy with scrambled graphics.

I'm guessing the reason I'm having a difficult time patching this .ios is because half of Mario Evolution 2's levels are vertical-scrolling levels. This is my hypothesis becuase I downloaded a hack called UN Owen Is Her and it also resulted in a blank screen upon patching the ROM. (I did this on the Mac program Multipatch, not sure about Lunar IPS.)

I just downloaded the compressed file and ran the .BAT file and the .EXE. It worked fine. Then I used Lunar IPS to patch the patchme.nes ROM and started playing. It seems to me that you don't even need to worry about anything anymore. Since you've successfully patched one SMB ROM, then you should have nothing to worry about. I guess the smb1.nes ROM was just a ROM to help expand the hacked ROM or something. Load the patchme.nes ROM in your NES emulator, and delete the smb1.nes ROM, and you're ready to go!

Speaking of the hack, it was a bit unfair in terms of those who don't use save-states (blind jumping? Rapid falling speeds, right on to randomly placed spikes?). But seems like the point of the hack was to use save-states often, starting with stage 5 or 6.

Well I tried running the BAT then EXE files, then patched the .ips to Patchme.nes, removed smb1.nes, and the ROM is still blank after patching.

I feel a little ashamed for asking this, but what do I do, from start to finish, to successfully get this hack working? If not, can I get an easy .IPS that all I have to do is patch a ROM and I'm good to go?

Sorry for being a bit misleading, as I only recalled the process from memory. I read the readme and it actually says:

(0)_Readme.txt
@@@...‚±‚̃tƒ@ƒCƒ‹‚Å‚·B•K‚¸Å‰‚É“Ç‚ñ‚Å‚‚¾‚³‚¢B
(1)_SME2.bat
@@...ROMŠg’£—pƒc[ƒ‹‚Ì‹N“®—pƒtƒ@ƒCƒ‹‚Å‚·B
(2)_smevolution2_100fe.ips
@@...IPSƒtƒ@ƒCƒ‹‚Å‚·B‚Ü‚¾“–‚Ä‚È‚¢‚Å‚‚¾‚³‚¢B
SME2.EXE

So it looks like you should run the .BAT file first, patch the patchme ROM, then run the .EXE file. I copied over the original contents of the compressed files into some folders so I could test this. I tried only running the .BAT file and patching the patchme ROM, and the hack looked fine. The smb1 ROM will only have some barely messed-up pipe and mushroom platform graphics, and the patchme ROM would have the hack running smoothly. However, in a different test folder, I only patched the .IPS file to the patchme ROM, and nothing happened.

I didn't mean my last post to come off negatively. If something's still going on, use the .IPS patch that I just uploaded.

I ran the BAT file, then patched the patchme ROM, then ran the exe file, and the ROM is still entirely blank. No title screen. No anything. I don't know if I should just give up because I'm never going to get this hack to work. -.-

Even the by-itself .ips doesn't work. Do I need to use an emulator other than NEStopia on Windows or Mac?

Did you use the Primarytrainer patch which expands the ROM size?

Actually... I just opened the ROM in Nestopia, and it didn't load! I had been using NesterJ until just now... trying it in FCEUX 2 and FCEUX 2.1.2 still end up with similar results. One thing I remember with NesterJ is that it would load the proper levels of a SMB hack (or ROM, for that matter) that was patched with one of those "bad" SMB ROMs, while other emulators would load the one underwater castle. I don't know... maybe the process needs to be run using bad SMB ROMs? The creator use a bad SMB ROM, perhaps? Maybe it's one of those queer things that can never be explained...

Maybe that will solve the problems I've been having with this hack. Do you happen to know where I can get this patch?

Well I'm not willing to download a NES emulator to my PSP (just too complex), plus I'm pretty sure they don't have an option to record SFX/BGM, so I can record/rip the game's entire soundtrack in wav/mp3 format. The hack does have some kick-butt music.

ISD SMB Utility has the primarytrainer ips included. Get it off at romhacking.net/

Okay, I tried re-patching the SMB1 ROM that already had the primarytrainer patch on it and as expected, no luck.

Download SMB-fix if your ROM is bad and also download SMB Reformer from M.K.S.'s (the creator of SMB Utility) website. Note its in Japanese.

Good news; I discovered that the ROM is not broken, as I've tested it on the Windows version (not PSP) of NesterJ. So for whatever reason, NEStopia doesn't run the hack, once again probably due to the even-numbered vertical scrolling levels being too complex for the emulator to handle.

I even discovered it can record .WAV files, so I can record the soundtrack, but it appears NesterJ does not support Game Genie, so I can't do the "Jump as high as you want" cheat (AETLTK) to easily bypass most of the levels (or get via them easier).

NEStopia also dosen't run expanded SMB ROMS.
