In actual gameplay news.
I started over yesterday and got an amazing new world. It started me in a valley between a few mountains that has a nearby cave system. I built a nice 11x11x4 wooden cube I call a house with my spawn point at the dead center. I "decorated" it with six labeled large treasure chests that keep all of my stuff organized... unnecessarily so. As well as my primary workbench and furnace. I found the cave system by complete accident. I was collecting sand to level out the sandy half of my yard, and noticed a part where the identifiably large body of water by my house started to turn into a waterfall. I decided to go in almost completely unprepared in terms of equipment and resources to make more, while I was down there I found an excessive amount of coal (I dug up about 130-ish, but it only let me take 128 of it in my inventory, despite having space for another stack), iron (about 30 pieces of ore, and there's plenty more), some gold (6 chunks of ore), and a single block of Redstone. I also found a monster spawner that had a few chests by it that I got a bunch of stuff out of (Redstone dust, a bucket, some bread, a saddle, string, etc). I also started to hollow out the mountain that's directly in front of my house that is approximately 13x20x3, and for shits and giggles, I filled it almost entirely with torches (232 of them to be exact) since I read that in an upcoming update, torches are given a finite time to stay lit, and pre-placed torches get turned into lanterns that take the functional place of torches as they are now. Call me a wuss, but I'm playing on Peaceful until I start getting more comfortable with my environment. Needless to say, I had a great time in the past five hours. I'll post screenshots later, since I'm posting this at nearly quarter to 3am and I'm exhausted. |

Torches in your inventory should also be automatically converted to lanterns, since he's just changing the graphic and recipe for the item ID of the torches to that of lanterns. ____________________ |

Cave systems are the best for finding various kind of ore and raw materials. I personally find it painful to dig out stuff manually.
And the whole lantern thing seems to be postponed indefinitely. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Since I bought and downloaded the update to 1.2.6, I decided I would start a second world and play it on Normal.
My spawn point wound up being on a very narrow beach that didn't offer much of anything beyond the few trees nearby. After gathering 13 logs, I made my workbench and crafted about 8 wooden picks to start mining out some coal, which I found in a nearby wall. A decent vein of about ten pieces of coal. When I noticed the sun starting to set, I started to hollow out a small cave from my vein and closed it off partially with a single block near the upper left (looking out). I made it through the first night with four hearts left... Zombie archers took advantage of my "cave" opening and fired in on me, landing a few lucky hits. I wound up dying early the second morning, because one of the zombies I started to beat away with one of my remaining picks hid around the corner in a small alcove in the rock wall. I tried fighting the fucker off with my wooden sword I made during the night, but seeing my low HP made me panic and I didn't fight very intelligently. Everything that moves that isn't me on this game scares the shit out of me, be it a monster or a cow... I guess I'm easily scared. feelsbad.jpg |

It's a lounge I built in multiplayer. There is more to it, but I only took one screenshot. I spawned most of the resources with my OP powers because crafting, mining, etc is a pain in the ass in multiplayer. ____________________ -Ninjablooper |

That's a quite creative use of fences, halfblocks and signs. Notch should add some proper furnitures, he already talked about adding a bed of some kind, as a self-placed "respawn" location. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

it's fairly trivial to hack the level data to change your spawn location but yeah it'd be nice to have a better way to do it ;p |

Changing spawn location also changes the "north pole" location as well. I usually build my home near the spawn but still. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

The reason it's worse in multiplayer is because the population. You're competing with other people to get all the local resources. I'm happy doing survival and mining when that is my focus, but in multiplayer I focus on building. ____________________ -Ninjablooper |

Competiting for local resources probably will become less of a problem when it's going to be easier to move around, and also able to change spawn locations. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org
