Oddly enough there ISN'T a minecraft thread here.

For those living under rocks in the deepest trenches of antarctica:
Minecraft is a sandbox type game where you place various blocks and build things.
In the paid Alpha you do essentially the same thing but you must mine all your resources and fight off hordes of creepy monsters in the night. You can craft various things and explore the infnite landscape.

http://minecraft.net/
http://minecraftwiki.net/
http://minecraftforum.net/

Alpha costs ~$13 USD, you get all the updates and every future version.
Discuss it, post screenshots and etc.
------------

a castle built from stone mined by hand painstakingly, on top of earth carved out by hand with nothing but a stone shovel

I'll post more when it's not 5:45 am.

I made an entire town. Here's a bad screenshot of it from my five hour Minecraft journey. This is old and outdated, but one of the only screnshots:

It's a lot better now.

Exactly how does the multiplayer mode work, anyway? (Cooperative or PVP?) I played Alpha for a while when it was free, but the servers had crashed and the whole game was frankly feeling like an inferior first-person knockoff of Dwarf Fortress.

Cooperative. The only problem is greifers. If you build in a safe place, SMP is very fun.

You should still get a copy blackhole89. Then we can run a little server and have fun or something.

Half the fun I had in this game was creating with friends.

Oh yeah is there demand for a minecraft server? I can probably set up one rather easily.

Yes blacky, that is about an accurate description.

It's still okay to play in multiplayer, though. I visit a friend's server, then get mad.
It has a nice PvP mod on it, that I plan to use for griefing the fuck out of their entire town while they sleep.

EDIT: Er, I meant I have plans to break their town because they killed me for absolutely no reason.

I know a very good server that I'm OP on if any of you wish to join.

I'd would prefer a closed knit server over a fairly open one, I'm already OP to a few unrelated servers already myself.

I can probably just host a minecraft server from home since the game isn't too high bandwidth as far I saw?

It'll need lots of CPU/RAM, not sure how much bandwidth it uses per person...

Hmm, yeah that is true. It needs at least 512 MB of RAM last I checked, with 1 GB being the recommended amount of memory.

We should try to password it some way to keep out griefers.

Or you could just not give out the IP to anyone.

You can also use a permission plugin to basically make so that random guests are unable to do anything. And only trusted users are able to interact with the landscape.

This. We can just post our usernames here and a server admin can make us trusted.

I'd also recommend getting the game soonish since the beta might start any week now as soon Notch gets some crucial bugs fixed. Which will make the game slightly more expensive. *looks on Blackhole*

I can't wait for the beta. I assume multiplayer won't be so buggy then.

As of right now, there's actually minimal bugging.

Disappearing blocks, random crashes, chatting not working...

uh... it does, though...

>random crashes
As long as you don't do anything stupid (ie: set off a 15m3 TNT nuke...), there shouldn't be any problems.

>disappearing blocks
I think this only happens in cases of bad lag.

Crashes happens more commonly if you set your rendering distance to high. Reduce it to normal and the game should be MUCH much stabler.
