I believe it's good to have a page welcoming the new users once they've registered. It would give them an idea of what goes on here, where they could chip in, and the few things that they shouldn't do. I think it could reduce the number of "stop 'n' go" users that register. The page could appear right after they register, and some links at the bottom for specified sections, and a link for editing their profile. It should give them a good feeling when registering instead of dropping them inside. Agree?

A FAQ is specifically for new users.

But once you've registered, you're redirected to the index page, aka more or less thrown in the middle of the board

But apparently users are supposed to have read the FAQ before they register, so it's okay.

Well, I think a simple check box is enough for us to completely trust people as having read the FAQ.

Yeah, like Accept/Decline buttons are enough to trust anyone as having read the license agreement of a certain program.

ABXD does require you to read the FAQ and write a word that's found in the middle of the FAQ. But I find that to be annoying when you're joining multiple boards. I usually just search for 'the word' in the FAQ because I'm lazy
Not to mention such a system could bring "hey d00dz when i want 2 register i see a textbox dat sez 'the word' wutz the word wat am i suposd to put in it plz reply" type emails to the owner... but those noobs would have to find the owner's email first

Hey, at least The Word can be disabled.

Or here's another idea. A letter search that forces them to read each point until they find the letters in question. For added security, you can make it into a mildly difficult word scramble.

I think that at the moment, our capacities are really sufficient to wipe up bad users after the fact and there is no reason to risk turning good users away by making them jump through hoops just to register.

I love how confusing and annoying Trel's idea is though. I saw we make them complete puzzles. Hell, have them finish all three Prof. Layton games without looking up any answers, randomly clicking, or using hints. Only then can they be accepted.

Well, the point of my suggestion, though a pain in the ass for some, would ensure that the FAQ is read to some extent.

It would still be far to many hoops to jump through.

Maybe so, but even if we DID force the FAQ to be read, that still wouldn't stop particularly tenacious bad posters (i.e purposeful trolls). BUT on the same token, it would act as a nice captcha-ish filter for spam bots.

If that'd be implemented only as a measure against spambots, I'd prefer any captcha instead- even the most fucking unreadable one in the world.

Might I recommend Securimage, then? It can be as unreadable as you want it to be

Personally, I think it would be more likely to deter potential long-term contributors, and more likely to stick us with purposeful trolls than anything.

Fair enough. This would be the point where I would say, "Haters gonna hate" and dance along on my way through idiocy, but I realized how dumb my suggestion was.

In the end, how much damage does the spammers do currently? They make a annoying thread or two, then disappear, then it's just a matter of trashing the thread.

Now if they were literally posting 100 threads in a row... ;

That would take time, and I guess they'd most likely get noticed during the process, because the board's flood protection makes you wait 30 seconds (or one minute, I can't remember) between two threads.
