Alright, I've been using Windows since 95 first came out, I've also had the pleasure of using 98, Millennium Edition (aka the best virus software Microsoft ever wrote), XP, to an extent, Vista, and now 7.

I liked 7 a lot at first, but in all honesty I am starting to hate it, atleast when Millennium Edition blue screen'd you had a very high chance of being able to go back to what you were doing. Unlike XP and beyond where when you Blue Screen your computer reboots...

Now then, I've noticed one thing that seems to be related with these crashes, for the most part they happen when I have Fire Fox open. I don't know if it's the cause or if it's other software I have installed. I am running Windows 7 Home Ultimate, I think, I know it's 64bit. I don't know what the problem is but for a while now I've been having crashes left and right and freezing, and my sister is having the same issues, but all of her problems end up being blue screens. Mine end up being my computer just randomly freezing like it's Gamefreak's way of trying to keep people from pirating...

The latest installation I've had on my computer has been Media Player Classic, which was recommended by /a/, along with some codecs to make it run well. I downloaded them from the makers sites and not from a download from /a/ because god knows what you could pick up from any anonymous source on the internet. Though last time I installed something recommended by 4Chan I was having the same issues, I downloaded a 4Chan add on that allowed you to hide threads and what not and I experienced a lot of crashes then. Though it was nice to be able to filter out junk I didn't want to see.

Should it persist I will uninstall the codecs and media player classic. I've had at least four crashes in a 24 hour time span. The only other thing I've downloaded and installed has been Vocaloid2, and I was getting crashes well before installing that, I think it's Media Player Classic and the codecs from the community codec pack thing.

One wall of text later...

tl;dr Is Windows 7 causing crashes and other related stuff on my computer or is it the software I have installed?

I can say that it's probably not your OS, since I'm running Windows 7 home premium without issues.

Go with uninstalling Media Player Classic and if that fails, Vocaloid2, and if both fail.. System Restore to before you installed Media Player Classic, since system restore clears some things uninstalling doesn't.

Or, you could get MPC-HC (MPC hasn't been updated since mid-2007, MPC-HC was last updated 9/17/2010, so I bet it would be more likely to work with whatever codecs you're using, and windows 7 (since, well, win7 came out in 2009...)). Also, if you just downloaded/installed random codecs, some of them might've been incompatible with each other, which could cause problems. Get something like the CCCP, which is a pack of codecs tested to work with each other. Assuming you have some sort of codec clash that's causing problems, then go ahead and use that restore point and then install these instead and you should be fine. If it's something else, well...

Chrome, for a browser that people actually use. Opera is a niche application and its quirks are seldom accounted for.

If you get a BSOD, the blame lies within Windows and not the spefic programs (a badly behaving should not cause a OS crash). Or rather, it's most likely hardware or driver related.

Are you using Firefox 4 beta by any chance? Possible it's usage of hardware acceleration is causing problems, but you can turn that off.

I think the culprit might be bad RAM or bad harddrive. A bad harddrive can cause seemingly random freezing in the OS.

I am not a fan of Firefox, but I can gurantee Firefox isn't the cause of Win7 slowdown or bluescreen. I recommend you go a virus check first, and uninstall Firefox, and use IE8 which goes with Win7 defaultly, see whether your system continue to crash.

But again, I don't believe Firefox can cause system crash.

Agreed.

If these things happen even without Firefox, then it's probably not Firefox's fault. What are you doing when it crashes with Firefox open? Actually, what are you doing whenever it crashes? If it's graphic intensive, there's your problem.

Maybe you need to update your Display Driver? I think that's most likely it.
If you have your Windows Installation Disc or know someone who does, press 'Windows Key + R' --> run cmd --> type 'sfc /scannow' and it'll look for problems with Windows

Don't forget the regular stuff:
Something like Advanced System Care
Anti Malware Bytes
Virus Scan. If there's a virus you can't get rid of, google it and see how other people fixed it.
If all else fails, system restore back to before you had this problem. If that doesn't fix it, it could be bad hardware.

I've had bad experiences with VLC. Although it runs pretty much anything, the video/audio sync is kind of off and takes a while to skip compared to MPC. I just downloaded CCCP and watch everything in Windows Media Player, unless I have problems.
