I know a ton of people are probably pissed and have been impatient and rightfully so, there hasn't been any work or news on Reuben in nearly 5 months. DahrkDaiz has been hacking for many years and Reuben is to be the last big project I'll ever do for rom hacking. I love the hobby but there's so many more things I want to get into. However, I do want this to be an editor that changes the face of rom hacking forever.

With that said, Reuben is not dead. Development has halted for the real life issue of getting married. Things are finally about to be summed up this Saturday when I finally tie the knot. Obviously I'll be doing things that newly weds do, but I hope that by June I can begin working on Reuben again. It will be much harder to devote the same amount of time as I did before, but once I begin working on it again, I will continue to let people know the progress status.

Once again, I apologize for such the long delay, but this is a hobby of love, I just have more love for my future wife than I do for silly programming projects. Either way, I look forward to getting back into having my nose in Visual Studio soon 8)

You do you man, if people don't like it tough tits for them. As long as people wanna finish your old hack projects etc. & you give 'em your blessing it's all good.

This is what I've been saying for quite a while.

People, just be patient. June isn't that long of a wait. Even then, to expect it from DD is flawed logic. I want my Reuben too, but just chill out for a bit.

Congratulations on the marriage. Take as much time as you like. I'm curious, how will Reuben revolutionize editors?

Congrats!
The delay on Reuben is quite understandable.
When I got married last October the rest of my life outside the wedding and honeymoon pretty much shut down.

You don't have to apologize for that!
Congratulations on your marriage!
Good to know you're still motivated to work on it, as long as it comes out, that's the essential; SMB3 came out in 1988, so it is about 22 years old, so waiting a few more months is nothing compared to that
Hopefully the open-source side of it will make it even more revolutionary! (who said built-in music editor ? )

(I just realized I'm as old as SMB3!)

You got any new stuff in or are you pretty busy too?

Unfortunately, I'm pretty busy creating a commercial game for iPhone (and my first ever full home made game!)
I will probably post about it here once I'm ready to communicate on it to get your opinions
But I'm surely not quiting ROM Hacking, especially when I dream of making a fully featured music editor for SMB3! (not sure if it will ever come out, but you know, in my early days of ROM hacking I dreamed of hacking SMB3's music, and you know what I've done a few years later...)

That's great to hear
You and Daiz are the best SMB3 hackers I've ever seen, and you guys always impress me with your work and videos.

Ew...

Seriously though, Congrats and good luck with everything. Hell, I personally would rather see you live out a happy life with a family than finish some SMB3 editor. Take your time. If it happens, it happens. If life gets in the way, then it's probably not a bad thing at where you are in life.

While you're (possibly) doing that, any chance we'll see some Reuben MMC5 love and be able to use the extra two square wave channels this mapper supports? I mean, if you're going to make a fully featured editor, why not take the time to modify/tear down the engine to support it? I guarantee you nobody else is going to do it, mostly due to lack of knowledge...

Anyway, DD, Hope your wedding went well today! All this planning up to this point really does make it worth it, I think.

Well I can already see many issues with that, it would imply massive rework of the music engine itself (I've only worked with the format so far, not the APU registers stuff); I'm not sure there's enough space in the music engine banks for it, moreover songs would be at least 33% bigger, and that would require to rework the format too (for example, the fact that all channels are relative to the square1 one and take 1 byte,it would easily go over 0xFF for the extra channels and not be convenient at all - not sure I'm being clear here but whatever).
Moreover, I really believe that it would just not have the feel of SMB3 any more it it doesn't sound the same.
So I'm gonna go with "unlikely" here

I'd assume it's just about the same amount of trouble for just one channel then, right? You'd still have to rework the engine completely; it's just a matter of space?

Yes, one or two channels, it doesn't matter; at this point I guess I could just write my own improved sound engine seeing the massive work that would be required.

Lol, that didn't stop DD in this regard. He rewrote the entire level format.
Maybe you could just do that instead of hacking the existing one to work especially with Reuben. That would be... badass. I'll help out any way I can! That'd be cream of the crop hackin' right there.

(Obvious begging, needless to say)

Well I'm not even sure to have the skills for that, and I don't have enough time anyway!
I don't even know when I'll be able to work on my music inserter again so...

But if you really want it you should pursue your learning of ASM and then you'll be able to do it yourself

Well after a while, I decided that yes Reuben will expand SMB3 hacking capabilities, but for those waiting on Reuben, I admit I got a little frustrated in January, but I realized that although in theory not as powerful as Reuben, it is still quite possible to make a quality hack with workshop/the map editor. You just need to know what's going on in workshop and the map editor, but once Reuben is released that will probably be the preferred editor over workshop hands down because of extra level/graphics flexibilities.
