Thanks for your comments, you guys. I really do appreciate it. It really helps me stay motivated to continue on with this hack. It also helps you guys too, since I'm using a beta version of Reuben to make this. That means lots of the potential bugs that would otherwise have slipped by will have been caught through means of developing a full hack with the beta!

I also plan to make some less dithered graphics as well as de-dither some existing graphics. I'm finding out that dithering isn't all the rage these days...

I found the peculiar style of dithering you used rather appealing...

There are "styles" of dithering?

I dunno, maybe I will keep them, then. I can have multiple tilesets for the same level type (i.e. three tilesets for hilly levels, four for plains, two for fortresses, etc..) so maybe I can keep these and cater to tastes of all kinds. Cool?

Well, I jujst go with whatever looks good.

Update! I have added an ASM hack that is going to be the basis of the gameplay originality for this hack. Here's the video!

Let me explain what is going on in this video. First, this level is just a sort of "training ground" for Mario, to show off the ASM hack and to complete certain obstacles normally impossible to overcome. This particular area combines flight and star power. When you get a "coin" (which will actually be called Power Chips) you get a little tiny bit of power. An accumulation of coins makes this effect last longer!

World 1 will be a normal world, with normal coins. As you progress, you will find that coins, "Power Chips", will begin to have strange effects in Mario and will need to take advantage of it in some places to continue on in any given level.

Levels will stay fresh and beautiful throughout. Each level will be new and strange, but fun and mysterious at the same time. I will not abuse this and make it so gimmicky that you just cannot complete levels and ragequit.

A little somethin' I've been working on lately. This is the start of a new hilly graphics tileset. I need to add decorational elements still, and possibly some accents for the ground here and there.

Hopefully SMB3 hacking will begin to flourish again... I'm really missin' the love, you guys. What say ye?

Why so pessimistic, bro? I've spoken with him and he's got things to take care of in real life that means more than Reuben. (read: marriage) so stop being such a blowhard and please post something worth reading.

He's also said to me that Reuben will be resuming progression sometime in June. That may or may not change.

Sweet graphics as always, KP.

I miss all of the SMB3 hacking too. My schedule only just recently freed up, actually. I'm guessing that everyone else who didn't just quit due to lack of motivation or because they were "waiting for Reuben" is simply too busy for now. Hopefully that changes soon though.

I really like the looks of everything that's been done. By the way, did you use YY-CHR to make your graphics or does Reuben have a built in graphics editor? Other then that, keep up the good work.

It does, and considering the way it's set up, I'd guess he's using that.

Actually, for new tilesets, I find it's much easier to use TLP just because it has a tile arranger. Making tilesets with a tile arranger lets you see how the tiles line up in any given arrangement so you can see what's going on, so when you finally build all your TSA you don't have any problems with things looking like crap due to misalignment.

But yes, Reuben *does* have a graphics editor. It's in its infant stages but I think it will become more robust later down the road. DD's working on getting basic functionality for all aspects of the game supported before further development is carried out. I only use the Reuben editor for small edits; I use YY-CHR and TLP for most of my graphics hacking.

Here's another screenshot showing progress on my hilly tileset. This tileset will be the basis of more hilly tilesets to come.

Thoughts?

I like the bits where the water to the left sorta dithers into the surrounding ground.

It's a limitation of palettes, but I think it turned out for the better. Makes the ground seem "soaked" and "saturated".

If you have enough tiles left, you should contemplate moving the center of the highlight on the pipes a bit to the left/top. It would make them look more properly three-dimensional.

Well, that area of the graphics page is pretty full, but it is possible to use the graphics page for the level (as opposed to the global graphics page) to have multiple pipe graphics, provided there's enough space. Unfortunately, I don't have enough space in *all* graphics pages for these new pipes, and I want to keep things consistent.

So how could I let this shit get 3 pages buried?

Anywho, I'm kinda itchin' to do some hacking again, but I'm lacking some ideas to get the ball rolling again. Any particular requests or ideas any of you guys have? I'm kinda relying on you guys for an idea or two for motivation... So, anything?
