How exactly do I use SMB3 Music Inserter?
I don't really get it.

1. I open up a rom I edited with SMB3 Workshop & Expand it.
2. Open the sample project.
3. Insert it into the rom.
4. Put object 0F in the corner with SMB3 Workshop (read somewhere I had to).

This didn't do anything.

Please if you know how this work's a good little "How to" would be really nice.

Short answer:
You'll have to wait for Reuben 1.0 to easily insert/play custom songs in SMB3.

Detailed answer:
As of the beta 1.3 version, the program can add musics to your hack, but there isn't any way to play them automatically; unless you add your own ASM hack to do it.
I hadn't had time to find a flexible enough way to do so at the time, so I made a version that would essentially be used along with the Reuben editor (which would let you select which song to play in a level's header).
Sprite #0F is useless now, it was a first try at implementing a way to play the new songs but it was unstable.

Anyway, the proper usage would be :

- expand ROM via SMB3MI
- apply .ips patch
- open/insert new songs into the ROM

But you won't notice any difference.
You can still check that it worked by manually changing the address $4F5 to your song index (with a debugging emulator such as FCEUXD).

OK, thank you. Quick response too.
Any word on when Reuben 1.0 will be available?

Could you please explain a little on how I would add my own ASM hack to do it?
I don't really know how to do that. I am a programmer though.

If you can make an asm hack on your own why don't you make one jasp.

Because that's not what ROM Hacking is about.

You don't get everything handed to you on a silver platter. If you want to be "unique" you need to work for it.

Unless someone is kind enough to make a program to simplify the process.

Exactly; moreover making an asm patch that would be easily usable by everyone and not likely to screw things up in other hacks is harder to do than a hack for just one project.
And I will make one for Reuben once it's out, because I assume that then nobody will use the original smb3 anymore, hence making a hack for it a waste of time (and I don't have time for this now anyway).

As a side node, I should advise to you that if you want to get into ROM hacking, it will actually require you to put efforts and work in it (at least if you want to get something worth playing at the end).

You should never assume.

Yeah, I know; but it's kind of an excuse for my laziness, because doing things with Reuben will be much easier - and by "nobody" I think I mean "a minority", for which I could totally be wrong of course (and it's not necessarily a good reason anyway).

Zand, are you serious? You have apparently not seen any of the videos made that showcase what Reuben can do.

This is a re-embed of one of KP's videos of his work in Reuben:

Hopefully this makes you realize how dumb that assumption was and that you'll reconsider.

This SMB3 patch offered will mes you up. I used the SMB3 upgrade patch and all my music is gone. And the objects don't appear in my great level. Now I'll have to start all over again.

Wait... you said you could do the ASM thing to make it work? So how about it? I also heard that that's already been done. so it should be easy.

The patch has only been tested on a clean non-hacked SMB3 ROM, however it shouldn't mess things up like this, even on a hacked ROM. Maybe you missed a step in the process, like not having extended the ROM before applying the patch or something like that ?
If not, I apologize for the inconvenience
Anyway, if you imply that you tested it on your one and only hacked ROM and hence lost everything you made on it, I would strongly advise that you always make backups of your ROMs before applying any .ips patch or modifying it with any program.

As for the ASM hacking part, you'll have to do it yourself; instructions are in the txt files (you would just need to write the song number to $4F5, however it is up to you to create a hook to play it in the levels/world maps) - you need to actually know how to code in ASM of course.
I do not plan to release any patch to work with the original SMB3 - only the Reuben one will be updated once the editor is out.

Technically, you could just write the address in the cheat console in FCEU~

Open it up, type in the address you want to write to in the "address" field then type in your song number in the "value" field. Click add! I'm not sure if that really works though, but try anyway.

Jaspile, out of curiosity, the converter tool... does it output corrupted files less than it does now? Are you (or can you) going to improve the compatibility?

You know, I can (barely) understand why one wouldn't want to use Reuben.

But not even taking a few minutes to go through this thread to find out why the ASM patch won't be made for the regular ROM?

lkshdgk;adhg;a

No.

Please do us a favor and just read the thread before you ask questions. He's not going to make an ASM patch for the regular ROM. End of story. Asking over and over isn't going to help you at all. In fact, it will only cause issues in the end.

Closed.
