The picture is able to fit within the palette limitations as long as you get rid of the brown and grey, use the same two shades of green for both the cannon and visor, leave only the outline of the head and arm cannon, and use sprite layering to add the rest of the colors. The upside is that while that would take more tiles than normal Mega Man's face, Samus doesn't have facial expressions, so you can use the same sprites for most stuff. There will be slightly more sprite flicker though, but Samus will look amazing.

I couldn't find out who made that pic, so I'm going to make my own sprite sheet for Samus, it'll be a bit different than that pic. I will add a glimmering effect on her visor to replace Mega Man's blinking, and I'll make it so that her visor shines at the beginning when you press start. I can't show her face due to palette restrictions.
I am going to have fun making a sprite sheet Maybe I'll release it on Spriter's Resource after I finish with this hack so that other hackers can use it.

Edit: I'm currently trying to make the most detailed sprites I can while still staying within the 5-color limit. So far I think I can fit a bit of yellow on the arm cannon. It seems small, but the small details matter

Edit 2: The sprite sheet is coming along nicely. I'm using the Android pixel art app Isopix (Thank you for suggesting this app for me Model FZx ) I can really make better sprites because I'm not having to edit things one 8x8 tile at a time. It should be finished in the next few days.

Can't you guys use Matrixz's Capcom Sprite Assembler? It uses Mega Man II for sprite editing. If you're experienced at least a week, then it allows to recolor and tile placements.
Problem: In gameplay, screen flickers when enemies are more than 8 sprites so be careful.

I can't use that right now. I only have an Android tablet, and I can't get a PC anytime soon, so I'm working with what I have. Mike-Tech probably can use that though. I am trying to not rely on the sprite layering too much, as I don't want sprite flickering.

Also, I wanted to know, is it possible to have the weapon palettes be seperate from Megaman's/Samus's suit palette without messing up other palettes? I tried making Samus orange and yellow no matter what weapon was equipped, but I noticed that the Air Shooter tornadoes and Leaf Shield were both orange.

Concept stage select of my mega man 2 hack. I have deleted my other one, it felt too "messy" for my liking. Now...I need opinions and names for these guys! The ones on the left and right are twins, accidental double production. Also when I put them in game, would I have to edit these concepts or am I good copying down the palettes? Please note, I drew these from scratch and my pixel art is nowhere near good.

@PKStarship The weapon projectile color palettes are linked to mega man's palette. In other words, in your hack, whatever color Mega Samus is, weapon projectiles are the same.

Those look pretty cool I'm afraid I can't come up with any names, I kinda suck at that. One thing I notice is that almost every one has a green gem on their forehead. Does that power them, and would that be part of the story, or is it just a small detail?

Only way I can truly explain it is by showing you this image:

This romhack basically is about Zero's awakening. But he uses prototypes first, to try and see what works best. Since Zero has a green gem on his head (Omega from the image), I kinda thought that he would HAVE to experiment with his power chips on different robots. In fact, "Zero Awakening" has the basis of Dr. Wily starting to build Zero. I plan for Bass to be in the fortress stages at least once. Also Dr. Light and his X blueprints were kidnapped and Protoman will help you. The bots are kinda influenced by this one image, and also these were loosely based off of some planned mega man fan game I drew up.

I can't find the offsets for Dr. Light in MM2, though. I have the whole MESSAGE FROM PROTOMAN done, but unless Proto Man turned into a Dr. Light Clone, I'll need to find is offsets.

Edit: looking at my avatar helps out too lol.

Also, I wanted to know, is it possible to have the weapon palettes be seperate from Megaman's/Samus's suit palette without messing up other palettes?

Yes but you have only 4 palettes to pick from (they are usually assigned as: the player plaette, the face palette, the minor enemy palette, and the boss palette) AND you will need the CSA to do it easily (I know, you don't have PC)

HOWEVER, you can also just edit those using a hex editor. Just change manually the hex values of the weapon colors to your default color choice (we have 8 weapons & 3 items).

I tried making Samus orange and yellow no matter what weapon was equipped, but I noticed that the Air Shooter tornadoes and Leaf Shield were both orange.
That's because the weapons share the player sprite palette (Megaman's), you can reassign their palettes with CSA.

I'm almost done with my sprite sheet. I only have got five of the large Mega Man sprites (from the ending and weapon aquired screens) and the helmet left on the hill at the end to edit. I am pretty proud of it, can't wait to show everyone!

I finished my sprite sheet!

Please, tell me what you think of it!

I don't really know how to import these into my ROM right now. I tried my very best to add as much detail as possible using the sprite layering. the red, green, and light green parts are supposed to be seperate from the black, yellow and orange parts when they are put in the ROM, then they will be properly layered to resemble the sprites shown on the sheet. I'll try to find out how to import sprites from this sheet by myself, if I can't, then I'll ask for some help.

When I finish this hack, I'll release an extra patch that only has the Samus GFX, no saving or weapon changes

How do you sprite layer in Megaman 2? That would come in handy for my hack.

To be honest, I don't really know I probably should figure it out, because my sprite sheet is near-useless until I learn how. Sorry I can't be of help.

You did all of that, I gotta admit you got some artistic talent going on there.
If you don't mind let me keep a copy of it, I want to throw this in a rando rom for laughs and see what happens.

Sure, it's all right for you to use it If you put it in a ROM, can you send me an IPS patch so I can have the graphics in my hack?

@PKstarship:

You do realize that the colours you used is not going to appear as it is in the game?

Samus' body (plus head and buster) is limited to 3 colors (or 2 if you count out the black outlines); However for the big sprites, you can use 3 colors (you can replace the "invisible color" with the black outlines since the background is already black).

I was going to make the head and buster just an outline (except for the yellow on the buster) and the other colors would be layered with seperate sprites to fill in the outlines, so the Samus sprites are just two sprites stacked on top of each other.
I also thought that would work with the ending sprites too.

Or are you just talking about the shades of the colors? I know that the yellow will not be the same in-game as it is in the sprite sheet, The NES only has like, one shade of yellow, and it's not that great.

Not sure if I've ever asked before, but does anyone know the offsets to Mega Man 2's boss AI? Is Mega Man 3's DocBot ai the same as the original mega man 2?

Also, what is the best mega man ROM to hack? I've been thinking of hacking another Megaman ROM. I just don't know what.

I don't know about any boss AI offsets, but I think Mega Man 6 has a lot of potential for hacking, being the last of the NES games. You could do something like have multiple characters, like Protoman and Bass in place of the Power and Jet forms.

The 'DocBot' AIs are not at the same location at all. I can help you find the offsets, I think.

It depends on your goal. I personally started MM3 because of the RMs and the Doc Robots.
If you want to make a short, simple and fun hack, every games are good, MM1's limitations may be annoying.
If you want to make a totally masochistic hack, MM1 all the way with Spiked Wall Rooms.
MM6... Yes, using the forms as character changes in MM6 is a very good idea! It's like MMX8's character swap thingy.
Or just do MM2 again, because it's the most modded game in the series.

The offsets for Mega Man 2's boss ai, I mean.

Huh. Never thought about hacking MM6, I totally forgot about that one.
