Not nearly enough hacking seems to get done to Earthbound, so here's a thread about it.

First, a whole bunch of useful things.

Second, some screenshots of that hack I'm sort of kind of working on but not very much.

Main character and some window graphics!

The hack stats at a hotel. A very gaudy one.

This is what the status windows are supposed to look like. You'll notice in the first screenshot that the top is a bit wrong.

Third, a warning. Map hacking in Earthbound is...well, frankly, a pain in the ass. If you plan on trying your hand at it, know exactly what you want to make beforehand, because there are a kajillion different tiles, some almost identical to each other save for maybe a few pixels. Perhaps drawing a set of simpler map graphics would be a feasible solution? *hint wink nudge*

Fourth, some stuff the first link doesn't have.
If you're musically inclined, why not try some music editing?

Then what've I been looking at these past few seconds? Baked potatoes?

That's a nice striped hat you made, Cynic.

Set Firefox to ignore/trust/whatever it.

Either way, I changed the links, so hopefully they work for everyone now regardless.

Also, feel free to post any additional Earthbound-related tools you guys happen to find/make. I'm pretty sure I missed one or two.

I really like the looks of this hack so far, especially the edited rolling HP meters. Keep up the good work.

Speaking of Earthbound hacks, are there even any completed ones?

As in hacks that are at least as long as the original game.

There was one for the original Mother that changed the sprites into Final Fantasy ones... the author, if I remember, said he didn't get around to putting in everything he wanted, but I don't remember him saying it wasn't finished either :/

Earthbound hacking is so much fun ^^

I kinda quit though, i got more involved in smrpg hacking.. But I'm really looking forward to continuing my EB hack.

This probably seems REALLY stupid to a lot of you, but it thought i would make it just for the heck...

You start off preferably in Onette (or even the northern continent since it's close to a pre-existing lab, and what looks like a simulation chamber), and as you make your way down stairs, your mom reminds you that you need to go to the professors lab and test a new technology: Simulation.

There are no random battles on the way to his lab, but there are events that take place, such as seeing your childhood rival who also wanted to test this new technology, but unfortunately was second to you during the pick. He challenges you to an easy fight, and after you pretty much tear him apart, he runs off.

Your rival also plays a big part in the hack, similar too pokey's part.

Basically, once you test the simulation, an error occurs and you are sucked into a virtual world, full of errors, glitches, anti-virus software, and even other beta testers.

The main antagonist of the story would be a virus known as Throx (excuse me if that name belongs to some other huge game figure, i made it up on the spot >,<)

Throx was made my your rival, in an effort to eliminate you once and for all.

Soooo any thoughts/suggestions? I don't mind if you say something harsh, just be helpful as to help me further the hack =P

Ill try to post some pics of the hack when i get the chance so far, I'd say my main character sprites are done as well as the other three characters you'll gain.

Ooh, I love simulation-breakage in games! And I love the Mother series. Recently completed EarthBound 0... Anyway, you should edit some of the backgrounds to give the appearance of data flow, or glitchiness in general. And have some fourth-wall breaking plot too, that's always cool in my opinion.

Well, one problem I'm having, is i don't know how to change backgrounds.. well, let me put that in better words: i know how to change the background of a given enemy, but i don't know how to customize a background, to make it look as though it is data flow as you said, or something out of the matrix so to speak.

But i made one of the bosses, and i did happen to stumble upon a background that does look REALLY glitchy..

Any info on how to customize a bg anyone? It would greatly help me out!

Oh and btw, Friedslick6, what do you mean by a fourth-wall breaking plot? Something along the lines of another dimension? because I did have some idea of time travel..

well please, feel free to suggest anything, I'm actually looking for things to add to the hack, and trust me, you'll be credited!

A fourth-wall breaking element is a part of the game that references the real world; Not the one the characters exist in, but the one that you and I exist in. It's a good way to give the player a sudden sense of realism or to freak them out in general, if done right.
I remember when I first played MGS2, and the Colonel suddenly told me:
"Raiden, turn the game console off right now!"
"The mission is a failure. Cut the power right now."
Scary stuff.
Aaand I wouldn't try making new backgrounds unless you know how to hex edit well. Instead, try changing the graphics of some backgrounds to something more suitable, then use those backgrounds for your hack.

I've experienced a rather major setback.. I was working a custom title screen, and i guess your not supposed to edit the company names... Everytime i load the game to test it, it freezes as soon as it hits the title screen.

Unfortunately I had to start over, because data got corrupted. my custom sprites are all glitchy and can't decompress, and blah blah.. So im going to start over, and try to make better use of a back up copy (yes i had one, but didn't think to use it) But not all is bad, I have the sprite that was corrupted saved in my photos, and not to mention that i don't have very far to go to catch up.. lol sry
