I say it depends on the console. You can have perfect graphics, but I won't enjoy it if it has a bad control scheme.

My current SNES9x and ZSNES control configuration:

Control Pad - Arrow Keys
B - C
A - V
Y - X
X - B
L - A
R - S
Start - Control
Select - Enter

Now when I play SMW without that configuration... I fail. I really wish for the Wii VC you could set all keys to the keyboard if you have it plugged in. With some systems like N64 I prefer the real thing WAAAAAAY more.

I don't see how you can play with X and Y separated like that. It must make it a hassle to shoot fire/cape spin and carry an item at the same time.
Also, your L and R keys seem way off to the side.

Your control scheme is wacky.

I love the NES and all, but I don't have my own personal TV anymore, and I need a new adapter since mine fried.

Playing NES on my DS/GBA or computer is easy.

I only use about three keys in SMW and there all set around the same area. I rarely ever use X, I use Y instead. Also A and S are convenient, I just extend my finger a bit.

As far as control schemes are concerned, I always take advantage of ZSNES's ability to make a different one for each game. I honestly don't see so few emulators have adopted that feature. It's incredibly useful.

I can't exactly say one way or the other. Most of the games I've played emulated, I never played in their original form. My first gaming system was a PS1, so I've not had a ton of experience with games systems earlier then that. I have played them, but not much

I do not personally feel like I get a complete experience with emulation. The "real thing" is always the best way to play things for me. That is why for the past 10 years I have been a collector of classic games for my favorite childhood gaming consoles.

You can get more than the full experience with emulation. You can find adapters for old NES controllers , a good emulator, and a reasonable sized monitor and play with more features than before.

I prefer the real thing when I can use it, but for old consoles/games I don't own, then I just emulate them. Since I have a USB controller, it doesn't really damper the experience too much.

Plus, it gives me the ability to play some games I would never have had the ability to, like the Nintendo 64 and games that were stolen from me back in 2006....

To me, it's mostly like Alkerion's, given that I have access to a Wii but nothing else. The major difference is that I very, very rarely had access to a game controller so I don't have much experience to the contrary to dampen.

I loaned a SNES and N64 many years back, that was kinda cool, but not enough to invalidate the above.

Another important difference is that nothing was stolen.

Depends on the genre of the game. For some of the slower paced genres I prefer emulation for it's acceleration capabilities, however the real console is highly preferable when that isn't true just because I like to get completely immersed in games, and whilst sitting in front of my laptop I find that difficult for all of the compulsive rudimentary activities that I periodically maintain while on the computer still tend to interrupt my gaming experience whether I plea pay mind to those activities or not.

This poll really needs another option: "Depends on the machine".

I prefer playing Super Mario World on an emulator rather than on the Wii, mostly because emulators support nice HQ*X filters which make graphics look smooth, whereas the Wii doesn't even have linear filtering and the game looks horribly pixelated.

But when it comes to Wii emulation, for example, I really prefer the real thing. Wii emulation is far from perfect and games don't always run at full speed, even on my computer (Core 2 Duo E8500 @ stock).
