Hello
Can anybody explain to me why the level graphics of Mega Man X NOT is possible to see with for example Tile Layer Pro? Does it have anything to do with compresion? It's realy annoying ...

There are alot of SNES games with encryption in it.

For example:

Super Bomberman V, you can ONLY see the characters, Not the blocks or text or ANYTHING else.

I wish I knew ways around the encryption.

I'd love to translate Super Bomberman V.

And I'd love to edit Mega Man X as well.

I see. Well that kinda sux. Hopefully the upcoming Mega Man X editor from Xeynamo(I think I spelled that correctly) will have some kinda tile editor inbuilt in a future realese. So thats one more problem when hacking SNES games, they can have like a protection against tile editing unlike NES games. That's bad =(

Actually believe it or not, there are some games on NES with a little bit of graphics encryption (Like there's pieces of Mega Man 4 that I believe are encrypted, like the picture of Kalinka). But they're not common.

Not to stray the topic too much from Mega Man, but like Kio said, there are encrypted/compressed images in SMB3, like if you open a ROM in Tile Layer Pro a good half of the images are obscured.

Thankfully there are editors like Nesticle that let you edit graphics IN game.

Although I wish that were the case on Mega Man IV, but, it can't save to the rom in that one.

I do digress,

There's got to be some way to remove the encryption on the SNES roms' graphics.

I just don't know how. If anyone knows, I would love to know how.

In most cases it's not encryption, it's compression. If you removed the compression, the graphics would take up a lot more space in the rom. I'm going to wager in a typical case that it will take up 60% more space in the rom. I did a rough calculation on Zelda: A Link to the Past once and found that I'd need almost another half a megabyte to store all the graphics in an uncompressed state. When you look at a typical limit of 4 MB and 6 MB in rarer cases for a rom, you can see why they compressed the data. Also, if you compress the graphics you have the ability to use smaller and less EPROM chips, which were expensive at the time.

Sou how would one go about uncompressing, and more importantly recompressing these roms, sou they could be edited?

That depends on the game. As you can see from the screenshot on the Lunar Compress page, there are several options, and that program only supports some of them.

Also, it's "how would the data be (de)compressed", not the whole rom. It'd be silly.

Edit: one thing that you might like is that the page lists MegaMan X as supported.

NIce. I didn't even know that existed. With some fiddling, do you think it could remove the compression in Mega Man IV?

Again, you're stating things that just aren't right. Lunar Compress is a (de)compression tool. You take compressed data from a rom and decompress it to an easily editable external file, then compress it and put it back.

"Removing the compression" in any game would imply taking the compressed data, putting it back uncompressed, then editing the game itself to use the uncompressed data as-is. Though possible, this will be different for each game.

As for supporting Mega Man IV, if it's not supported by Lunar Compress now, it probably never will be. On the other hand, if you somehow figure out the compression specifics of that game, you're free to write your own similar tool.

Not to the addition of straying from the topic, there are NOT compressed or encrypted graphics in SMB3. Encryption is a security measure, you'd be hard pressed to find a rom that has actual encryption. Also, in the NES, generally you can't pick and choose what graphics are and are not compressed. Most NES games stored their graphics on a CHR-ROM chip where the graphics data cannot be compressed as the processor never touches CHR-ROM, only the PPU and the PPU has no internal decompression algorithms to use.
