Look at the 3 videos below:

Spoiler:
Yay for the unused clouds palette! =)

A couple of days ago (maybe yesterday), I was at the forums of DKCAtlas (Donkey King), enjoying looking at the forum "DKC Projects/Fanworks" then I saw the thread called "Japanese DKC Hackers". I went into it, saw the link on the first post, clicked on it, and guess what...it lead me to a Youtube video that is a hack of Donkey Kong Country 2 (Kannon's Klaim)! I was so surprised! It was a YT user named prgmdest (look at his channel, it has LOADS of DKC & DKC2 hacks!) who created these levels (I think). I subbed to him, became friends with him, and looked at the rest of his videos. He seemed to hack Donkey Kong Country 2 the whole way (maybe not, as he stopped at Forest Frenzy in DKC)!

Then I asked myself, " Is there a Donkey Kong Country 2 Editor somewhere?" I tried searching for the editor. No luck. Then I PM prgmdest where he get the DKC2 Editor from. I thought he was Japanese. His videos were Japanese. He even lives in Japan. But he was actually English, and he can't even understand Japanese. So I PM him again in Englished form. Now all I have to do is wait...

Here's the Editor!

If you look into it, you will see a program (sprite editor) and a folder that includes Platinum to edit the DKC2 Levels. It's sorta hard to use. Go ask someone the tutorial, as it is Japanese...

Woah....

Words fail me - this is incredible shit.

One word of warning though, that zip file contains the japanese DKC2 ROM. It's inside the mapedit folder. Might want to take that out, and re-upload it.

I didn't played much with the editor yet.. But when I found out that the ini files of it's map editor could be easily translatable, I couldn't resist

http://acmlm.no-ip.org/uploader/get.php?id=2329

Provided you didn't changed the folders name when you extracted them from above package, put the english.ini file into the Languages folder.. ''sdk2editor\sdk2_mapedit\pl_171\Languages'', then load the editor and when I did it loads it should load english by default, if it don't go in ''Help'', then ''About'' and change it from there.

Have fun, now if someone could find a way to translate the exe file, that'd be even more easier!

Actually after some digging, the actual link from this site http://www.hyperdevice.net/ seem to have an english version aswell unlike the bundled link above, oh well false alarm! But still it's good to know that it's in english somehow

If I actually knew how to work with this editor I'd love to make my own levels, as this is one of my favorite games ever made. I guess I could look it up, has anyone tried making new levels yet on these boards?

Something, I've been wondering forever. What kind of the animation engine does Donkey Kong Country have. The sprite pattern table is only 16kb, and you can only update 6kb during v-blank with the dma.

IIRC, DKC uses SGI equipment for the graphics.

Also, dragonboy (), this isn't the slowest forum, activity wise. I know much worse places.

That does not answer the question. The question was basically "how does the game manage to do so much with so little time and space", while the SGI equipment (which I dare not claim otherwise, mind you) was only used to create the graphics in the first place. There's nothing special about that.

I joined June last year. Although I have generally been a member of this community since at least 2003. Proof?
Here's one of my posts from December 24, 2005 on one of the older versions of the board (Acmlm's Board).

Wow. Anyways, I'm going to go off to have a try at this.
