Hi all,

Is there any way I can rip graphics from arcade games? I mostly would like backgrounds.

EDIT: My question may seem too vague but say for example, if I wanted to get a particular background from an arcade game, would I need to use YY-CHR or does it not accept arcade files?

An interesting question. If you load any ROMs from MAME, you might chance on some that share formats that are identical to home consoles, especially on arcade hardware based on home consoles. Other than that, I doubt there's anything with explicit support for them. Also, if any ROMs are compressed or encrypted, you're pretty much shit out of luck, unless you can figure out the compression format.

Actually, I find MAME's built-in viewers adequate most of the time. Stuff won't be encrypted or compressed there.

The main problem with using external editors is that in a lot of games I've tried, things were interleaved from two seperate chips (therefore ROMs). You'd have to identify which set of ROMs belong to eachother, then find the big endian half and merge the two into a single file that you can then, hopefully, load in your favorite editor.

If anything else, if you can't figure it out, you could pause the arcade, and do it pixel by pixel.
