Mungyodance 3! It's a game similar to DDR, but simpler.

Yume Nikki. Since I don't know any definitive website for the English translation, the Japanese version fails to render the text properly even through locale changes for some reason and there ultimately only is a download link - Here, I blogged about it.

It's good.

I downloaded it a while back. That game makes no sense whatsoever.

Techno-Sylph Vsys Gaiden

This shmup is unique as you can 'evolve' your fighter into different forms and use different weapons. The addition/evolution system is a little complicated and it doesn't help that it's in Japanese but I have created a tutorial that will explain things clearer.

It is located here.
=======
Here's an interesting game. Before I go on though, I ask 2 questions:

1) Do you like shmups?

2) Do you like PKMN?

If you answered YES to both (or even if you didn't), GOOD! This one's for you!

Pixelships

And this game is also easy to hack using a HEX editor so you can mod the ships to have different weapons and stuff. Very good time waster.

The only bad thing is that there's no sound but who cares.

TAGAP: The Apocolyptic Game About Penguins
Yes, Penguins. An awesome platforming shoot-em-up. You've gotta try it to understand.

Dwarf Fortrress. Incredibly addicting, and doesn't need much RAM or videocard power, maybe just a gig or two of RAM. Needs a helluva lot of CPU power though.

Rented Wario Land Shake It!, got Super Mario RPG on VC, got Megaman 9 on WiiWare, and of course I'm playing Mother 3.

So far I'm on the 3rd boss in Wario Land, just started SMRPG, beat 3 robot masters in Megaman 9, and am in the middle of chapter 7 of Mother 3.

If you're into military strategy games, you really can't go wrong with Nectaris. It's easy to learn and challenging. I'll not bore you with the history of the series, instead directing you here to read about it and learn how to play:

Base Nectaris

The one worth looking at is the German Abandon-Ware version which is a massive overhaul of the game. It can be located here along with most of the other games in the series, however other than the Win 95 and German ones, the rest are probably illegal to download. Nectedit allows you to modify saved games on the German version.

Mike's Nectaris Downloads

Note: To play the German one, you need DOSBox as it's a DOS game.

Here's how you can use a shortcut to run it:

1. Create a new shortcut.

2. When it asks you for the path, type this: 'C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.exe' '(Drive Letter):\(any extra folders followed by a \ until...)\nec\nec.exe'

eg. 'C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.exe' 'C:\NectarisDOS\nec\nec.exe'

3. Rename the shortcut to whatever.

The Win 95 one is also worth downloading due to how many different maps you can get and how to create your own maps (if you can figure it out).

You can get such stuff here: Win nec

Download NECEDIT for the map creator/editor.
The ..._MAP.zip files on the page are recreations of the GB, Neo, and PS contest maps.

Enjoy!

This is one hell of a free shoot-em-up. Then again, it wasn't always free.

You start out as a terraforming pilot, Trent Hawkins, who gets thrust into the middle of an intergalactic war and is forced to blast his way to freedom with whatever he can find or buy... which range from simple civilian fighters to high-powered mercenary freemarket ships.

There are dozens of upgradeable weapons to choose from, ranging from somewhat weak (vulcan gun) to uber-strong, such as the MegaCannon (shoots massive shots that do tunneling damage) and the Lightning gun (maximum level makes for a constant stream of high-damage lightning bolts).

However, even that's not enough to save the known universe from hostile takeover; you can buy a pair of 'sidekicks', drone ships with unique properties - which range from simple blaster platforms to the powerful Zica Charger and the devastating battleship-class firebomb.

Each 'chapter' is practically a game in and of itself, and there are four chapters... lots and lots of blasting stuff, and the story is surprisingly good. You'll probibly need DOSBox to run it properly, though.

(Just a note: I got interested in this game after I played this game on an arcade machine. I think there might still be a few surviving arcade cabinets, but I don't know where they are if they still exist.)

Here is an updated link for an excellent little shmup called Guxt, which was talked about earlier in the thread.

Get it here along with other Pixel games and stuff: Studio Pixel Games

Another shmup, almost appropriately named, is called Minishoter RS. There are many secrets to be found in this game (unless you cheat and mod files). It is very challenging and also a good timewaster.

You can get it here: Minishoter RS

And for other excellent shmups, some of which were already talked about (Torus Trooper), go here: ABA Games

You will not be disappointed. =)

okay, for the musically inclined, I have two games/engines (call them what you want):

StepMania, which is an engine capable of simulating games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Pump It Up. for those that know about it, In The Groove used a modified version of the StepMania engine. (note: you'll need to get/make your own *.sm files and matching MP3's. not that hard, given the built-in editor)

For those that play BeatMania IIDX a LOOOOOT, the best LEGAL* equivalent on the PC would be Lunatic Rave 2, a Japanese-made Be-Music Script (BMS) player. BeatMania is basically a DJ game where you play an instrument not too different to a percussion pad with a turntable attatched. every keypress or turntable scratch produces a sound, and playing the notes correctly will have the song sound correct, since the notes you play are PART OF THE SONG. (note: you'll need to acquire your own BMS files and matching KEYSOUNDS (which are made of a LOT of wav files). you'll also have some issues with getting the JUKEBOX settings right - drag and drop a "group" folder (which has 1 level of subfolders that contain your BMS and KEYSOUND files in them) into the white field on the config screen. if that doesn't get the songs recognized, try one of the three buttons under that white field. make a thread if problems persist.)

* - Running an arcade version of IIDX on anything BUT the actual arcade cabinet is illegal. yes, it's possible due to the more recent versions of IIDX running on a particular Windows XP version. no, I won't tell you how. don't ask.

Time for more shmups!

What do you get when you mix two of the most popular classic shmups together? You get G-Type!

As the name implies, it is a combination of R-Type and Gradius in a very unique game. Every difficulty results in something different and there are several secrets such as a hidden Boss Rush. G-Type is very challenging and worth playing.

====

Speaking of Gradius, the makers of La-Mulana made a game based on the Nemesis MSX games, an offshoot of Gradius. They have since taken it down, but some people were nice enough to create a Wiki which has every version of the game (in Japanese). You can find the downloads here: GR3.

There is one thing though... it requires Java Runtime in order to work, so much so that some versions of GR3 require specific Java versions. All of this is on the Wiki.

Not per se a separate game (NetHack has been mentioned before), but Vulture's Eye and Vulture's Claw are isometric graphics versions of NetHack and SLASH'EM (Super Lotsa Added Stuff Hack - Extended Magic, one of the more popular mods for NetHack) respectively.

You can download it HERE; it's very nice if you can't stand NetHack's ASCII interface, although Vulture's Claw is a little rough around the edges.

Tons and tons of old freeware games (DOS, Amiga) can be found HERE!

Very good stuff, I've seen Doom, a demo of Descent, some old Win95 games, and a DOS game of Galaga I used to play. Takes forever to look through the stuff and the needed files aren't too easy to get though. Think of it as an online flea market!

Freespace 2

Classic space combat simulator. Constantly updated with improved graphics by a team of die-hard modders and gamers.
Honestly, if they could legally re-release it, Freespace 2 would give Crysis a run for its money in the eyecandy department and still be able to run at max graphics on more than a handful of computers.

(I will be making a separate thread about this game as well, I'm just putting this here for archive purposes.)

EDIT: apparently, this is no longer free. Good Old Games decided to digitally distribute the game (WITH NO DRM!) for $5.99 - still worth it, but not free.

If this hasn't been mentioned, Iji. Super freaking amazing platformer shooter. Has great music, great plot, great everything. If you don't play it you're missing out.
