Yesterday I find that I can't log onto the Internet. Says that it's unable to connect. Naturally, I run a diagnostic of the problem. It's solution is to reset Winsock so it has all it's base service providers reinstalled and then restart the computer. So I tell it to do so and let the computer reset itself. Comes on, I log in, open IE7. Nothing. Same "Internet Explorer cannot display the Webpage." So I run another diagnostic and the resluts are as follows:
------
Last diagnostic run time: 03/24/07 14:54:14 WinSock Diagnostic
WinSock status

info: Error attmpting to validate the Winsock base providers: 2
error: Not all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed.
info: Redirecting user to support call
info: Redirecting user to support call

Network Adapter Diagnostic

info: Using home Internet connection
Network adapter identification

info: Network connection: Name=Local Area Connection, Device=Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection, MediaType=LAN, SubMediaType=LAN
info: Network connection: Name=1394 Connection, Device=1394 Net Adapter, MediaType=LAN, SubMediaType=1394
info: Ethernet connection selected
Network adapter status

info: Network connection status: Connected

HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Diagnostic
HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity

warn: FTP (Passive): Error 12007 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: The server name or address could not be resolved

error: Could not make an HTTP connection.
error: Could not make an HTTPS connection.
error: Could not make an FTP connection.

Ok, by this time, I'm frustrated and unplug everything. Yay, no Internet for me.
Let the computer sit overnight. This morning my mom comes and tries to get on and is successful. So am I.
My question is, should I be worried that my Winsock is corrupted and needs a fix? This happened once before and Geek Squad had to fix it. We aren't going to call again. I also just downloaded a Winsock Fix incase it happens again or I need to fix it soon, before it does it again. I don't want to go through this process again, and I can't be sure that the connection will come back from being turned off overnight. I'm pretty sure that that was sheer luck.

I haven't had any problems like this on my MacBook

It appears you where having some sort of DNS server problems, as nothing was able to resolve the hosts. Either that or something really is messed up on your system.

Yeah, if the problem fixed itself overnight, it's pretty safe to assume it was a DNS problem on your ISP's end. No reason to panic, it happens sometimes.

Next time it happens, if the connection's not restored by morning, maybe try calling your ISP first? You don't want to keep paying Geek Squad to fix a nonexistent Winsock "problem"...

No, you don't want to pay Geek Squad to fix anything. Trust me.

Just find a neighborhood geek somewhere.

If your internet mysteriously stops working, try calling the ISP first and see if there's an outage. Worst case, wait until tomorrow and try again, or see if anyone else is having the same problem.

We won't pay them for anything again. My mom is convinced by now that they leave something in your computer that causes troubles again so they come and fix it again for more money.

I HIGHLY doubt that, otherwise someone with brains would've created an uproar (and likely taken legal action) by now. Remember the whole Sony rootkit fiasco?

I'm sure if you do a Google search for "Sony rootkit" you'll find something relevant.

Well it's quite feasible they cut corners and use temporary fixes and hacks, that are likely to fail or cause more problems later. Whether they do this intentionally is another issue.
