well, I've been playing for about 5 hours now, and I'm up to Azalea. I've been taking my time, but also I'm rather disappointed that they fixed some stuff, (Falkner's levels in the Gym) and neglected to fix some other stuff (Level's of the wild Pokemon in the Ilex Forest) However I like that you can trade right after you get the first badge (on wi-fi that is) and no dex restrictions, so props for that at least.

Though these games leave a lot to be desired in some areas of polish, I thought for sure they'd fix the wild levels, I mean in Red Yellow and Blue the Pokemon were all around or in the low mid teens after Mt. Moon right before the 2nd Gym, and you don't get that in Heart Gold and Soul Silver till after the 2nd Gym... I question why they did this in the originals, but I really wonder when they do it in the remakes... I mean they did a ton of redesigning of areas and what not, and that's all nice and all. I just wish we didn't have to hack the games to make them more enjoyable... I hope I can get around to changing the levels when the American versions are released... hopefully. So long as my router cooperates and I can back up my game from my actual DS card.

R/B/Y were also a bit more compact than G/S/C. 8 gyms + Elite Four compared to 16 gyms + Elite 4 + Red; they can afford to be a bit more spread out (even if the wild Pokemon in Kanto are very much on the low side). Besides, from my experience in the old ones at least, trainer battles gave much better experience than wild Pokemon ever did.

For Ilex Forest, they probably kept the wild Pokemon levels down to stop you from completely steamrolling Bugsy. I mean, the poor guy has a Metapod and a Kakuna on his team, for crying out loud. I doubt they wanted another Misty (where there were only 1-2 Pokemon you could get in the area that were strong against her if you didn't choose Bulbasaur and didn't pick up a Pikachu in Viridian Forest).

(For what it's worth, they lowered Whitney's levels slightly, so the Miltank should be... about as bad as it was before, considering it can attack ghosts. All of the later gym leaders are either about the same as before or stronger.)

But yeah, seeing how I lack a flashcart and the emulators are... poor, I'm going to be sitting this out until I can get my hands on a US copy.

Fly to the coins
I've been playing Soul Silver a lot lately, and it's enough to make you sad because of how good it is in comparison to FR/LG. Not that I didn't like it though.

It's truly enjoyable and you can tell they put a ton of effort into this remake, despite levels which I don't care about myself--I'll just overlevel like I usually do.

You can trade with a D/P/Pt cart as soon as you get the Pokedex, as well (although not over GTS), so it's rather easier to do so than FR/LG's Ruby/Sapphire orbs that you must get extremely late in the game in order to trade with those versions.

(Late game spoiler, I suppose?)
Spoiler:
Also, the GB Player item makes the fact they worked hard on it more apparent, as you can listen to the 8-bit versions of everything in the game until you use it a second time, reverting the music to the DS version. They even have 8-bit versions of songs that weren't originally like that; like the Mart music.

I'm pre-ordering a US Soul Silver copy from Amazon as soon as possible, so it'll get shipped to me as soon as it's released.

Sorry to bump this, but I've been playing through more and I do have some more critique.

I'd say if you like Pokemon you should get this game, and even if you just want to relive the days of Gold and Silver on the GBC, they did fix Kanto at least, so it's not pathetically easy. The entire game feels more complete than it did in the 8bit days, though I find it strange that only one Gym leader had a party change.
Spoiler:
Clair now has a Gyarados instead of 3 Dragonairs and a Kingdra
The only other thing I can think of is that they made Whitney weaker, made Bugsy awkward... I just wish the wild levels were higher, it's so hard to grind if you have to.

For extra challenge I started a save file on Soul Silver to do a no evolution run, and I'm having a terribly hard time with Clair, you know something wrong when a 4x effective Choice Specs HP Electric base 70 power doesn't kill something...

Over all I'd say Heart Gold and Soul Silver are great remakes, I just wish they would've done what they did to Kanto's levels and applied it to Johto, the plague of levels below 10 after the 2nd gym just irks me...

I haven't finished the entire game yet, but it's definitely worth it.

Pfft, that's what you deserve for being a munchkin and using Hidden Power

I liked the remake...but it did make me realise that pokemon games have become boring for me. The main adventure just isn't exciting anymore because I've played it too many times.
