Why do they call it "cables" ?
It's only paper or electronic stuff, there is no rope involved...

In Ye Olden Days, to keep diplomatic information secret it was written on parchment and wound tightly to make it look like a rope or cable, lest bandits seize the diplomats' carriage.

Or, more seriously, it's a reference to the fact that such communications are often made over underwater telecommunication lines, which are often called cables...

Alright... I'm severely confused... Why does the board theme randomly turn into the White Hole and back to Minus World (My theme preset)?

Is it something to go with winter, or am I going bat shit insane?

It also happened once for me, so it's not you.

I guess it's a new feature for Winter, additionally to the banner that has already been switched to the Winter banner

And interestingly, we had underwater cables cross-atlantic since the 19th century or so. See here.

Of course we switched from copper-based cables to fiber-optics at some point, but it sure have a long legacy.

Yep... the switch to fiber optics wasn't that long ago, either. (In relative terms, anyway)

Yup, I was fascinated reading about it on Wikipedia the other day. And how vulnurable they are, I'm surprised they hadn't been ripped up on purpose by some group by now. Most related outages are "accidental".

Well, I can't imagine those cables literally being a piece of wire you can just go and cut, and the stock terrorists these days won't have much of an opportunity of practising underwater bombings either... and on that matter, blowing up a few cables would probably just cause a few seconds of outage before traffic is routed elsewhere.

On that matter, the list of worldwide critical infrastructure that was among the cables does include quite a number of underwater cable endpoints.

Works fine in Firefox 4 beta, IE8 and Steam's inbuilt web browser (which is based on webkit, so Chrome/Safari should work too...).

I bet it's the combination of the snow and the transparency/translucency for the background image to show...

The snow is random, right? Not frequent enough, in my opinion...

Posted by San Francisco Chronicle, via Pharyngula
Pakistani authorities have arrested a doctor on suspicion of violating the country's contentious blasphemy law by throwing away a business card of a man who shared the name of Islam's prophet, Muhammad, police said Sunday.

The case began Friday when Muhammad Faizan, a pharmaceutical company representative, visited Valiyani's clinic and handed out his business card. He said when the doctor threw the card away, Faizan went to police and filed a complaint that noted his name was the same as the prophet's.

If this isn't epic-tier trolling, I don't know what is...

Upgrade to Firefox 4.

Mmm. I rarely go for the newer versions as they tend to have more bugs/glitches or doesn't work aswell as older ones.

I use version 3.5.2.

I'm using Firefox 4 beta right now and it's stable enough for everyday usage.

Infact bit surprised they're not trying to release a RC sooner at least.

So Assange apparently was finally granted release on bail earlier, for £200k security and having to use an electronic tag.

Relevant tweet.
