Found these suckers down at Puresabe's site. They are supposed to convert midi files to nsf files that can then be inserted in the game (or copied via hex) but the instructions are unintelligible. If someone could help me figure this out, I'd appreciate it.

The Midi to NSF Converter for Mega Man 3-6 is buggy. I can't get it to work either. There is no use of using it. And I'm not sure about the Mega Man 1 and 2 one yet. But you need the NESASM.EXE in the same folder in the sample_tutorial.

I know how do it for Mega Man 1 and 2 one but I still need to figure something out about the .PRG file though.

EDIT: Isn't Famitracker also creates NSF Files from Midi. I think using the NSF File from Famitracker would be recommended.

But from I understand the Famitracker stuff isn't universal.
The sound engine from company to company and even from game to game is usually different and has different formatting.

At any rate if this Midi to NSF Converter for MM3-6 is figured out it will be a great help to me in my MMPD hack.

Well once time in the past, i've tried the mm3-6 one with countless midi's i'd download all over the internet .. and even went as far as to try downloading some sort of midi format converter program having Zero knowledge of anything about "midi" at all ... trying to convert them to like format 0, 1, 2 ... constantly keep trying that megaman midi program over and over ... never once succeeded.

Won't work.

Here's how the program seems to work - by giving it a MIDI file, specifically made to fit into the Megaman music engine - info on this is in the readme, but that's in Japanese, I think. Basically, the MIDI must only have four channels, each equalling the NES's four. The notes must have a length of 8/16/32/64 (I think), and most MIDI parameters are not supported.
I recall the converters outputting files for use in another program, but I guess that's changed - my knowledge of the program is somewhat outdated...

To get them into the game, you transplant them from the NSF or just copy the NSF's data into your ROM - assuming you haven't edited the sound engine, the second one would suffice for most people. You can't stick any old music data or engine in there - unless you do some extensive hacking, of course, which negates the need for this in the first place.

So then as long as I keep to the required midi format and don't mess with the sound engine it should work just fine, right?

It would make my life a lot easier if it works.

Ugh I just tried it on the new Famitracker and it's glitched.
All the instruments are assigned as VRC6 instruments.

That makes sense since that's the most popular chip for doing NSF remixes and original music.

I tried converting the MK2 selection screen song using Famitracker. Sounded horrible. Static in the background and other strange oddities.
