Hey all, I just wanted to know if anyone has used the gamemaker engine to make a mario 3 hack. I'm just curious is all, I mean I already use mario 3 workshop which is great. But i'm just wondering if gamemaker is even worth using for mario 3. I've seen some youtube vids of it in action, and it doesn't seem to bad. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks for the input.

Er, you can't use Gamemaker to create a Mario3 hack, it's not a hacking tool. You would be creating a new game, though you could copy the Mario3 physics and graphics and make it look like a Mario hack, but that'd be way more work than just hacking the game itself with something like M3W. More work than it's worth, probably.

Before I found out about SMB3 hacking and all of that, I found out about Game Maker from one of my friends. I built off of Djrellik's SMB3 engine and it just didn't seem like the same SMB3 that I grew up playing every weekend. The physics also didn't feel the same to me. After a little more searching, I found Board 2 and RHDN and quickly came to believe that ROM hacking was definitely the better route, at least when it came to SMB3. Not to turn anyone off from an SMB3 Game Maker game though. I still appreciate all of the work Djrellik put into his excellent SMB3 engine and you could definitely create a great and fun SMB3 game with it. I also found it neat how the music for the desert level that I saw in his video was the Gobi's Valley music from Banjo-Kazooie which I've always enjoyed. For myself though, I'm personally more comfortable and satisfied working off the original SMB3 that I grew up and am familiar with. I don't know if my experience helps you decide whether or not to pursue an SMB3 Game Maker project, but in the end it's your decision and your decision alone in deciding if it'd be enjoyable and worthwhile to you. Either way, best of luck!

There's a nice SMB3 engine by DJrellik.
I made a small demo with it:

As for hacking with Game Maker, it's possible to make a program that edits parts and stuff, but it takes a lot of time to make.

I made a Fester's Quest world editor with Game Maker, the topic is somewhere on these forums.

Man I gotta try playing with Game Maker again, I always wanted to make a Googie Toons platform game. I like the part of the video where you see the wood blocks as the background. ^____^

That's awesome. That's what I like about Game Maker, you are not limited by what is already there in a ROM. You can do whatever the hell you want.

There is also a Megaman engine created by N64Mario. I will probably be looking into that if I continue with my Megaman game design. Not being limited is the best thing. And the easy use of the program is just as good.

Game maker is okay, but sometimes its annoying, for example:

-its slow as fuck when file is over 10mb(mostly when saving, sometimes when room is "too" large)
-only supports mp3,wav and midi formats, have to use DLL's to get mod/xm/s3m/ogg etc support
-sometimes file gets corrupted without any reasons, and you CANT back-up/save any of you rooms/objects etc(from "corrupted" file, my game got corrupted like ten time in row when I tryed to add more music), at last gm has build-in backup system, but its very limited(it just backups you game when you save your game)
-unexpect error(s)
-you only can put titles/objects in room one by one, like you cant fill area with titles for example, as well you also ONLY can remove titles/objects one by one, boring as shit(well you can remove ALL, but still)
-GML is annying to learn
-3D is very limited, so making 3d game with gamemaker is pretty much waste of time
-6.1 version dont like vista/seven, and 7.0 dont like 98se
-7.0 dont have anything new, and 8.0 too(whenever it comes)

but after all its only "easy" way to make own games, but at most tile, I enjoy more hacking roms that making game with game-maker

Er, not supporting 98SE can't be that big of a con, almost no one uses anything older than Win2k. And, if 6.1 doesn't support Vista/Win7, then use GM7..?

Edit: Also, based on that video, it looks like it plays really slowly in GM.

Well I was recording it on an old computer so it's gonna be a little laggy of course from the game running and the recording program running.
