I'm thinking about starting a Metroid hack, but I'm not sure which game I actually want to hack. I'm leaning towards Zero Mission but I thought I'd ask what you guys thought.

Not gonna vote, but I'd say your skills might be good in doing some new graphics for a Metroid game, if at all possible, I'd also love to see how you took on room design.

Id say Super Metroid above all others though.

I haven't hacked Metroid Fusion or Metroid Zero Mission really, but I will say that Super Metroid hacking can be quite difficult to do.

I'd try them all out and see which one I could do best if I were you.

I've tried some of both but I haven't done any like layout changing of the map and stuff. I can do general editing of the actual rooms though.

Super has an awesome editor and a know-it-all userbase in #jzd. The game's structure as a hackable game is also great; graphics are rarely compressed and enemies have a DNA-system.
Zero Mission has an okay editor and the same trustable peeps from the channel, but as far as I know, the game structure is not as cool as SM (correct me if I'm wrong) as lots of stuff is compressed (with LZ77 at least, so there are tools around)

You could do Fusion, the original was pretty bad (due to all the forced dialog... in a Metroid game!).

Hey, Fusion was an awesome game. I won't hear that kind of bad talk about it.

But all being said, go for MZM hacking - it needs someone to show off what can be done with it. With Super Metroid hacks, it'll just get lost in the sea of other hacks out there.

metroid2002 got a hack/fan game forum that most SM hackers are at.
There is also the new place know as metroid construction made mainly for hacking metroid games.

The metroid 2 "editor" is not exactly what you might imagine.

People might say MZM is better and it's not up to me to argue against that.
However, MZM (and fusion) takes longer to make each room then by making one in the super metroid editor.
DH selects clip data separately so it takes longer to work with it, at least for me.

From what I poked around in DH, I can agree that MZM (of Fusion) level editing would be tedious.
