I would create the worst levels filled with all crap in Excitebike. I got bored with that level editor quickly as there were only so many jumps you could create. I tried reading the game genie manual when I was 10, but I wasn't sure what create your own codes meant because I tried messing around with them and nothing would happen. Back then, you had to purchase all the back issues of Game Genie if you wanted an extra code, and they never released the damn lives code for Gunsmoke, so I would just read all the codes of games I didn't have and imagine they worked for that game.

I too drew levels on paper for a long time, and I screwed around in excitebike too. Then, I happened to find Zelda Classic, and stuck with that for a long time, making some games, some were crap, some weren't, all were lost when my computer crashed. I decided to search for something similar for either mario or final fantasy (forget which), this led me to the acmlm.overclocked.org site, from which I promptly downloaded every editor available and started screwing around immediatly(I had already been into emulation for about a year at the time so I had all the games I used to play on the NES already, this reminds me of star tropics, I should attempt to hack that game) later on, I discovered the forums, and here I am.

After a while, I joined the message board later known as T.A.N., where I showed some incredible lack of knowledge about the english language. (Still... Joining the message board was probably the best thing I ever did, as it led to a huge development of my english skillz)
Oh my god, there's even more of us. And here I thought HyperHacker and I were the only ones left.

Though I suppose its a good thing if I couldn't tell you were from there. That place was the sole definition of eliteism (I wise 'WiseOlNoctowl' by the way. Much more active in the days when it was still PPN, jumped ship just before the whole place went to hell)

As a little kid, I used to draw Yoshi's Island levels on paper.

When I was in the fifth grade, there was a DOS game made by an upperclassman that was highly popular with us lower-graders (it was some kind of a Liero clone, just with tanks, less weapons and no ninja rope but some other features as a replacement... "Tank 2150" was its name). The game had the major weakness of not having anything like a random map generator... so I used a hex editor, deciphered the file format it used and wrote an independent, sinus curve based random landscape generator. The creator of the game shat bricks when I emailed him my tool.

A bit later (two years or so), I played a strategy game that was quite popular in Germany, Anno 1503 (released as 1503 A.D. in the US, but it never caught on as far as I can tell) and successfully poked around at the file format and wrote (the first) scenario editor for it... I also decoded the format of the separate islands later, but didn't get around to make a full-fledged editor based on that anymore since I got fed up with the game pretty much. (Its prequel was so much better...)

That's all I can recall for now...

I found it out because of a boy a 2chan who made a Super Mario Bros. hack (or I do not remember if HE made it) that was super hard. . . and I wondered how he did it! So I did reasearch. I taught myself everything from tutorials and documents. Now, I am very good ^^;

Hey, Yoro... were you (or your brother?) the one who hacked some of DKC's music format?

I know this is an old thread, but I might as well contribute anyways.

It all started out with GameShark.
I always used it when in came to having random fun effects on gameboy games.

I've practically decoded how it works by my own too.

I'm not sure about the first 2 pair, but usually it's 01, and then the next pair is the hex value used to replace that register, the next pair , let's say I set it to FF, is the $??FF place, and the last pair is the $FF?? place.

I never knew what the hell the comparison tools were until I started actually hacking. I didn't know what it was used for but eventually I found out it's for finding a specific register that you want.

I remember I used to hack Link's Awakening, change the colors to make it looks like different seasons, place custom tiles on the screen, I could make treasure boxes in places, and the level 9 or A sword is just awesome because it sets shit on fire.

I always wanted to make my own levels and other things based off the original game, it started with Super Mario Bros. 3, which I owned when I was 4. I just made up levels in my head and pictured Mario in the level. I drew some levels on paper too. I guess ROM Hacking was a dream come true for me.

Well for me, it started with the Game Genie. Way back when I first got it, I soon discovered all the random codes you could make with it. I didn't know anything about how it works, but I was somehow able to change the levels arround in some cases like Zelda 2 and MC Kids. I also discovered what I think is the ultimate SMB code that makes the first level totally random every time. I forgot one of the code, but the other I believe is ULAPAT. The first one is kind of like that, but different I believe.

I even used Game Genie when I first discovered emulation, and used it to have fun with SMB2. Then Mario Improvement came along and that's when I started to use the level editor. I remember reading about sprites being "embedded" objects and could not be edited at all.

The first part must have been arround the early 90's, while the latter arround the later 90's. Now, I'm a full fleged ASM hacker with actual games being hacked to add more play value. Currently I have one active project, one on the back burner, and one release. The game I am working on now is going to be my first fully edited game, minus graphics which I don't do.

Probably not as bad as my first ROM hack, "Mario's Trip to Hell". Somebody actually made a youtube movie about the hack. See the shittyness for yourself.

By the way, I wonder how the hell he got this hack, since Acmlm's old site is gone.

It's like all the joke hacks rolled into one

I started where a lot of people did: messing with stuff in RAM in Pokemon games. Then I moved on to messing with palettes in Sonic 1 (there's probably still a few copies of that floating around, since I posted it on A51's forums); didn't look bad in my opinion (and I was one of the first few to alter rotating palettes that I know of), but nothing awe-inspiring. I could probably make an IPS and post it, if anyone wants to see.

Then I went into messing with Mario World graphics (anyone remember that Dr. Mario tileset I was working on on the first incarnation? ) and pretty much lost interest in doing anything that I intended to ever release.
