I'm not sure if this thread is appropriate for this particular forum, so if not feel free to move/lock/delete it as per whatever moderator prefers.

Getting to my point, http://datacrystal.org/wiki/Main_Page, a user-edited encyclopedia, is seriously outdated with articles lacking in readable or useful information. Though this doesn't seem like a big deal, one site on the expanse that is the Internet, it would be useful rectifying this situation.

There are many ROM hacking communities which can be easily found, but most cater only to those that already have experience hacking and so can be a confusing place to jump into. An updated Data Crystal would fix this by giving those interested in learning ROM hacking a place to find things out for themselves, as well as read up on the various histories of the different hacking scenes and the hacked developed over time.

I'm not an administrator or moderator, but I am in contact with the main administrator and have his permission to set up common templates and etiquette for future updates. So if anyone is interested in helping out, if only by updating the articles they know something about, please post here and I can provide good articles as examples for what changes should be made.

Me and Konchuu already dealing with Mega Man hacking info. At least all of them.

Whenever Me and Konchuu sees, we add info to it. That way, we can always link to them.

I rarely add SMB1 hacking info also.

Oh my god, the Pokémon Advance pages on Data Crystal are a mess. If it were up to me, I'd wipe the whole thing clean and start afresh. I have never seen a more blatant disregard for common markup sense and wording.

I've added a couple of little bits to MM5. but it would be cool to see more contributions to all of Data Crystal. It's really a great resource.

Anything would really help.

I've created a standard for how most articles should look, but understandably most people might not want to take the time to make them that way. That's why if you have any information, just add it to the articles and I'll do the encyclopedia work. But when you do add info, if you know where you got it from or who found this out, please CITE YOUR SOURCE. Whether it's by including the name, ROM hacking handle of that person, or a site, just add it right by the info.

I'm going to include a list of example pages now with the proper way articles should look, on a few pages. To make whatever article look like the example pages, just go to the example page, Edit, then copy all of the text and paste it into the correct article and change the information as fits.

If you know anything about a hack, whether you're the creator or just played it a lot and want people to know about it, simply find the page and enter that information. A proper hack article should have information like this: http://www.datacrystal.org/wiki/Fatal_Fantasy

If you are a hacker or know anything about a hacker, edit their page or create one with information given here: http://www.datacrystal.org/wiki/Mateo. Just link or provide whatever image they typically use and I'll add it to the page.

If you are part of a hack team or know of one, edit their page or create one like this with information as closely as this: http://www.datacrystal.org/wiki/Skeetendo%2C_Inc.

If you like a video game, just go to [Game Name (Official Game)] and add whatever history or information you know. These are the articles you're free to just copy from Wikipedia or any other site you're allowed to.

I'd really appreciate any help you can give. Just provide the information and I'll do the rest.

Kawa, stop whining and just do it, noone will slap your fingers for adding useful information...

From what I can recall, somewhere around a year ago, this wiki was under massive spam assault in many many pages. It was becoming unbearably ugly on the most visited pages. The admins had to counter by locking a lot of pages, and it's possible that some content was lost in the process...

I agree that it would be great to update Data Crystal. The only time I've ever done anything on there was in mid-October 2008, but I'd be interested in contributing if I can be of some use. The information for Super Mario Bros. 3, I believe, could use some additions and updates. There are topics all over Board 2 and the archives that have very useful information that was never added to the Super Mario Bros. 3 ROM map.

I'm also wondering... I wouldn't want to take the table out as it is useful as it is, but if I want to add in specific data locations similar to the "Miscellaneous Data" section for the SMB2 ROM map, would I be able to add a "Miscellaneous Data" section for the SMB3 ROM map? Looking at the Final Fantasy ROM map as a guideline, it looks like different sections would be helpful and useful.

I've had quite a few people who want to start SMB3 hacking ask me for help and where to begin, so it would be nice to save time having to repeat the same information and be able to refer them to a place like an updated Data Crystal so that a lot of time is saved on both ends.

One of my friends who just started a new SMB3 hack asked me how I made the hills speed up in my second preview of Quick Bros. 2. I had the notes buried somewhere, but I dug them up again and found out the necessary data. I also did a little logging a little earlier and found some additional stuff - not a lot, mind you, since something or someone always likes to pull me away from what I'm doing.

Animation speed (ex. dancing hills, trees, water, etc.)
Value of 00 gives fastest speed except for World 5 which doesn't seem to animate.

0x17C11 - 0x17C14: 11 11 11 11 ; World 1 tiles animation speed
0x17C15 - 0x17C18: 1F 1F 1F 1F ; World 2 tiles animation speed
0x17C19 - 0x17C1C: 17 17 17 17 ; World 3 tiles animation speed
0x17C1D - 0x17C20: 17 17 17 17 ; World 4 tiles animation speed
0x17C21 - 0x17C24: 00 00 00 00 ; World 5 tiles animation speed (no animation)
0x17C25 - 0x17C28: 0B 0B 0B 0B ; World 6 tiles animation speed
0x17C29 - 0x17C2C: 05 05 05 05 ; World 7 tiles animation speed
0x17C2D - 0x17C30: 0F 0F 0F 0F ; World 8 tiles animation speed
0x17C31 - 0x17C34: 14 14 14 14 ; World 9 tiles animation speed

Status bar

0x35443 - 0x35444: FE EC ; Tiles used for blank and $ (dollar sign) in status bar.
0x35454 - 0x35455: FE ED ; Tiles used for blank and clock in status bar.

Desert Hill (World 2) music

          0x3875A: 31 ; Part 31.
0x387AD - 0x387B3: 00 02 AD 1B 0E 2F 33 ; Music header for part 31.
0x37D12 - 0x38D4A: (0x39 bytes) ; Music data.

Big Island (World 4) music

          0x3875D: 23 ; Part 23.
0x3879F - 0x387A5: 30 99 AC 20 0A 61 65 ; Music header for part 23.
0x38CA9 - 0x38D11: (0x69 bytes) ; Music data.

I have all of the music stuff written out, but I don't really feel motivated to type it out right now since I've been doing some more level editing in Luigi's Chronicles 2. I think it would make for some useful additions to Data Crystal too (permitted it's all correct). Maybe later...

EDIT: I meant to put SMB2 ROM map in the second paragraph instead of SMB3 ROM map, so I fixed that.

If there's any information at all you can add, feel free to add it whether in block-text form, or readable. Whatever works, as long as it's there. I'll take the rest of the hassle out by formatting it in boxes and the like.

I could do Advance Wars 1 to DoR stuff, but that would involve actually sorting out my notes to be in an intelligible order.

Again, whatever anyone can put up there would really help... I'd say 99% of EVERYTHING is labeled stub, and has information now several years old. I'm fairly sure people found some new things out by now.

Yes Quick Curly, the 'New SMB3 Hacker' is yours truly. I did find this document useful and changed the animation speed.

The reason World 5 does not have animation is because that world is made mostly of tiles that look garbled when they animate. (If you want proof, download Luna World, SMB3 Hack) Anything that you wouldn't find on any other world relies without animation. I hope you find this useful! Good Luck!

hey!! why the hell did you guys delete almost everything off the megaman 2 and 4 pages today ?? That's seriously NOT cool ... it was fine the way it was!

http://www.datacrystal.org/wikid/index.php?title=Mega_Man_IV&curid=1759&diff=21397&oldid=21367

http://www.datacrystal.org/wikid/index.php?title=Mega_Man_II&curid=1757&diff=21396&oldid=21387

All that information was USEFUL ....it did not have to be deleted. You guys could have just put the link to romhacking.net there without deleting all the damn stuff... Cause i personally go there to check on the megaman sections frequently myself to see the names of hacks in progress, that were completed, or cancelled, etc ....

May i just bring that page back or are you guys going to delete it again if i do, cause that was seriously all useful information, it's not junk....

I don't know if this danke guy is on this board or not...but that was not cool seriously.

I'd just put it back if I were you. Also, wow; changing the numbers in the game name to roman numerals is not only picky as hell, but it breaks Mega Man convention where numbers are NES games and numerals are the identically-named Game Boy games.

Freaking figures!
I restored it...and then he deleted it again ...
i hate the decision 100%
Just because "if it's not at romhacking.net, then it's not allowed to be here" or some crap

If they start deleting all the artciles people wrote for megaman hacks about like weapon changes or music changes and new enemies and stuff explained about these hacks.....then screw datacrystal
