So what happened exactly to LazyShell? Before it was released it was being praised as 'Greatest Project ever' and Giangurgolo and Omega were being called 'Heroes of the decade' etc. The LazyShell threads were also the most active part of the board.

What exactly happened that managed to kill off LazyShell and make on of the most inactive parts of the board?

The learning curve was too steep, the editor lacked micromanagement features that would have made larger projects bearable (like, a personal top issue for me, the option to edit in isotiles rather than blocks). Everyone waited for 1.1, which hasn't been released to date.

Omega can't program anything at all user friendly. Stop blaming the "steep learning curve", blame the shitty author instead.

Also, ROMhacking interest in general has rapidly died down in the past few years, especially amongst older games. That, and this forum hasn't exactly differed--other places there's still active projects and the like, but it's mostly a niche thing.

I'm not so sure that its "dead", but the decline in interest is probably due to the learning curve, my lack of presence around here lately, and the yet unreleased V2.0 that fixed bugs, adds features, and improves the UI. Combine that with the fact that there are so few people here that will ever create anything half-decent and we have our answer.

You may also want to consider that for the last month or so, anyone in post-secondary would have been far too busy to do any sort of rom-hacking. Now that summer is here I think we will see more activity all-around.

I will say that V2.0 is coming along, and now that summer is here its likely that itll be finished soon.

I just love it when those with no skill themselves try to insult the work of others. The fact that you think the problem is that I can't "program user friendly" shows just how ignorant you are. I might as well inform you that Design is what should be user friendly. Whether the code is the hardest thing in the world to understand or the easiest, the user gets the same experience. If I had any respect for you I might feel the least bit slighted, however your reputation speaks for itself. Nice try, but I have to deal with the ignorant all the time. Simply knowing that I will always be better than you is enough to keep me smiling .

I had to chuckle a bit when I read that the host that image is on is named "farm1.static.flickr.com"...

Apart from that, I think it's fair to say most are looking forward to the new version. If you are still taking feature requests, please add some kind of micromanagement mechanism to make it possible to paint in isometric tiles rather than the 16x16 display ones.

Glad to hear that V2.0 is coming along Omega. I was wondering about things here, but I wasn't entirely worried. I think SMRPG hacking overall would have more life to it than one might believe.

Also, I still don't understand the point about that one comment... But nevermind that, I agree a bit with blackhole89 on the level editor. It certainly would make level editing a little easier.

this thread sucks a million dicks but here's some thoughts anyway:

it's kind of dissapointing seeing SMRPG hacking in the state it's in after all that hype but i kind of figured that might happen with a game that's relatively challenging to hack even with a reasonably good editor.

Combine that with the fact that there are so few people here that will ever create anything half-decent and we have our answer.

and this part sucks. even with a wicked sick editor that 2.0 will probably end up being i'm still not getting my hopes up.

The sad fact of the matter is, you won't see many RPG game hacks that exploit what's available sufficiently and are good.

The thing is, producing a complete hack of an RPG requires a lot of work compared to most other genres. For another example, look at Pokemon - one of the most wildly popular games, tools out of the wazoo, probably the most documented games out there next to Super Mario Bros and Mario World, yet there's probably less than five hacks out there worth actually playing.

Hacking platformers (the most popular hack genre, it seems) is because 99% of the required work to produce something good goes down to designing just one aspect - the levels. And not just that, but small, discrete levels. Super Metroid is a notch up in the design requirement (and while relatively less popular than mario) it has less hacks due to the amount of design work and planning required. In an RPG you have to design more than just the worlds, you have to design characters, write a script, write in-game scripting, design enemies, bosses, etc.

There's a lot more work involved and it is a rare breed of person who is good at all aspects of designing a game. Group hacks often fail due to politics. It's even rarer to get a person who is skilled at all these areas/group of such and has the motivation to produce a full hack with it.

I'd personally expect to see two, maybe three worthwhile full SMRPG hacks in the lifetime of the editor along with a multitude of small ones like hardtype, balance, challenge dungeon hacks, etc.

It also didn't help that the editor was pushed back repeatedly--while that does not mean less would be interested, I certainly began to lose interest, unfortunately. I tried to use the editor at release, but I didn't have the motivation to do much with it

That's not to say there aren't a few individuals likely working on some things at the moment that simply haven't made it public. If one really wants to get some things going, they should google up some Super Mario RPG fansites, especially message boards, even GameFAQs, and advertise the editor there.

It's easy to criticize "shitty" ROM editors when you're comfortably waiting sitting on your steak for updates and answers to your whining. Steep learning curves, yeah, that'd be so cool if we could install a few sensors on our head and the editor would create the perfect hack based on some readings of our brainwaves...

i haven't been around for a while
im making a pro friendly verison
well just changing the battle scripts and items
i actually got it so that you use a item called 1-Up Shroom and it does the job of a pick me up.... but the thing cool about this one is, when you use it you actually see a green mushroom
so its the real 1-up mushroom like in the other games

next thing i changed is no more level ups... you are at 30 already...
the items aren't cheap... and the only items that are cheap give you little hp of fp, but.... you can'tuse them in battle!
the ones to use in battle cost alot....
i added a few new battles...
the enemies do combos and some have only a few weaknesses...
pro friendly like i said before...
still need to do more though...

i also am work on a hack that is completely different... maps, story line, scripts, everything but thats gonna be a long time....

i will only be able to start on that one after the summer (if i get my own pc )
until then i'll do the friendly hack slow and give out a little teaser verison when i get up around to the seconded star...

.....
You gonna love but hate the battle scripts at the same time

I'm sorry... That doesn't seem like enough to justify a bump of nearly 7 months, though it is appreciated that work is being done on it. Closed.
