Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

Michael Wilson, veteran of the Arizona Conflict and 47th President of the United States has been deposed in a military coup by his running mate, Richard Hawk. Now, he must take up the guise of Metal Wolf and take back America city by city, armed only with his Mecha and the power of BURNING AMERICAN FREEDOM.

...

I shit you not: this game actually exists.

Unfortunately, it never made it outside Japan... but it's so awesome and over-the-top that I might just pirate it. Even though I don't have an XBOX.

I remember seeing vids of it and reading an FAQ. Awesome game by FROM Software, the makers of the Armored Core series. So it's no surprise Metal Wolf Chaos is a mech game. I do find it funny that you fight against your running mate. Imagine if politics was decided by mech fights... >=)

I love how the word "satire" rarely seems to pop up in discussions about this game.

Do you even know what that word means?

Yes, and this game happens to be a perfect example of it.

Please elaborate. Because from my eye, this game is not satire in the slightest.

It's a satire of how voters think that the president can do anything or American patriotic fervor or something like that.

"Or something like that?" That's not a very good argument at all. I don't think you know what satire means.

I would say "No, you're the one who doesn't know what satire means," but I just did.

Anyways, since I doubt were going to ever come to an agreement on the definition of satire by debating in this fashion, we might as well consult The Infallible Dictionary.Com:

Posted by Dictionary.com
sat⋅ire /ˈsætaɪər/ [sat-ahyuhr]
–noun
1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

It's simple, really. The game uses exaggeration to ridicule the folly of American Patriotic Fervor™. I can't imagine how this game can not be considered satirical.

Dictionary.com is very fallible. It is all about Merriam-Webster.

Main Entry:
sat·ire
Pronunciation:
\ˈsa-ˌtī(-ə)r\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle French or Latin; Middle French, from Latin satura, satira, perhaps from (lanx) satura dish of mixed ingredients, from feminine of satur well-fed; akin to Latin satis enough — more at sad
Date:
1501
1 : a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn
2 : trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly

It is an exaggeration for the sake of entertainment, and nothing more. And, the president wins in the end. The plot is not nearly focused enough for it to constitute satire.
