Ok my ideas are boiling up into something that will be great I can feel it however where I stand is I need help on this. it is my hopes to one day be able to do this myself but for now all I can do is this.

ok I need several types of people who are good at hacking SMB3 both ASM And GFX Wise I also need several assists with level editing and world editing. however my big concern right now is ASM and GFX.

Now thats quite a bit of members I know but this is a really serious hack im thinking of.

heres a list of members and their jobs at this given moment.

Ideas:Mariofan0
ASM Hackers: (Vacant)
GFX Hackers: (Vacant)
Level Editors: Mariofan0

ASM hackers will all follow my instructions and such they will also have the first crack at adding thier own ideas to the game. GFX editors respond to the ASM Modifications and theirfor must work well with the ASM hackers
Level Editors must be able to handle a slightly more challenging task of editing levels which is going to be extreemly hard and due to the ideas i have will require them to add things you would not normally do in SMB3

anyways yea im not done yet.

Story:One day Mario Heads to Peach's Castle when he wandered inside a toad told Mario The Princess is out and is busy at the kingdoms magical vault. he also told Mario that Peach hasnt returned and Hasnt been spotted seince. Mario assumed the worst when he herd the toad say that and went off to bowsers castle to try and rescue the princess. (unfortunetly to his suprise is only holding captive a toad that knows where she is at the time.) once rescuing the toad Mario manages to locate princess Peach (Who happens to be inside of the magical vault.) and descovers that the only way to unlock the vault without the princesses key is to gather enough coins. once he puts enough coins into the vault the door shall open revealing the princess however bowser upset about his defeat earlyer is out for revenge and follows Mario into the vault and trys to defeat Mario Once and for all.

The game will also feature some complex gameplay so ill include a list of features for the game

Features:

1.unlockables-unlock new stuff by finding objects in levels, buying them in a special shop, storing X amount of coins, Leveling up to a spicific level, or beating the game with mario, a spicific amount of times or on all difficulty levels. and so the list continues.

2.Level system-characters gain experience by defeating enemies 10 for every normal enemie 100 for every boss and 500 for bowser. once they gain enough EXP they level up by 1 (Max 5)(Start 1) every time they level up they gain a new ability such as tripple jump.

3.coin storage-allows storage of coins in the vault and allows you to carry more coins then normal the only downfall is you cant use them in toad houses and can only use them to buy stuff at a special shop acsessable through the title screen.

4.new enemies-self explanitory

5.new power-ups-Self explanitory (ill talk more about this later)

6.Two more worlds-worlds 9 and 10 which will only be acsessable through certain means.

7. one bonus level- not really a bonus (due to the fact that it follows the story) but is unlockable all the same and is only acsessed through world select.

8. Seven (thats right) Seven Playable Characters all with unique abilitys and traits that will help you or possibly make it harder. each charicter has thier own EXP and must unlock worlds on there own by beating the world before it. (exsept world 9 and 10 which will be unlocked for all characters under cirtain requirements.

9.Sound test-whats this the list of sounds is incomplete well thats becuase alot of them are unlockable and stored in groups of SFX And BGM.

10.Cheat codes-why would you use these thats cheating.

11.pause menu- lists a bunch of stats and actions you can do during mid game this allows you to save which it does after every world anyways save and quit which in this case causes you score to drop to zero. item in your storage dissapers. you have to start thwe world all over again and if you unlocked a spicific lock it will stay unlocked. also when you save coins are deposited in the vault and removed from the current game so wether you save or not can be important due to the fact that you will also need them to buy power-ups.]

12-new abilitys-allows mario and friends to use spisific moves and power-ups almost all of these abilitys have to be unlocked in some way shape or form.

13.high score system-displays the highest score obtained while using a spicific character.

14. new objects-self explanitory.

15. New Equipment System.

Also this game has 7 Playable characters so you should probably look through this list a bit aswell

Playable characters:

Yoshi-Very Easy:With his flutter jump and the ability to use the fire flower (unlike mario or luigi he can only use the mushroom and the fire flower) he is ready for action in this Race to gather coins.

Luigi-Easy:With a higher jump and slower fall than his brother he is ready for some extreemly high jumps. (able to use all power-ups)

Mario-Normal:Not much to say exsept his ability to wall jump allows him to climb areas luigi can get to with his jumping ability.

Wario-Hard:he is very heavy and as such cant jump as high he also cant dash making it nearly impossible to jump huge gaps. but his power is massive he can take down most bosses in two hits. and with his x2 coin bonus he makes a slight comeback.

Peach-Special:Cant run as fast as daisy but has a slightly higher jump hight.

Daisy-Special:Cant jump as high as peach but runs faster.

Toad-Special:His jump and his speed are his most reliable assets while running at max speed he becomes invicible and can take out all enemies with a single hit and he can also run directly through bricks from the side aswell he jumps higher than mario and can thus obtain items luigi can but the damage he does to bosses is halve of what mario can do.

A List of the power-ups might help you understand what each character is capable of.

Power-ups:

Mushroom-All characters can use this to get bigger and take 1 extra hit.

Fire-flower-Only the mario bros. can use this normally but if yoshi gets a certain unlockable yoshi will be able to use it aswell.

Racoon-suit-ive taken away the racoon suit and made it so mario and luigi need to get a Special Ability Item to cause the item boxes to spawn them otherwise they should spawn a fireflower or a mushroom. (only mario and luigi can use this suit.)

Cape suit (not final) like toads ability to run through bricks this allows mario or luigi to run through bricks while running at top speed.(only mario and luigi can use this suit.)

A list of abilitys for all the characters might be of importance sence every character has his or her own talents its quite complex however Peach and Daisy are the most alike and therefor share nearly all their abilitys in common.

Abilitys Mario:
Wall jump
tripple jump
backflip
goldleaf
EXPx2 Mario Spicific
Stock-up
Power-mixing
Item Storage/item box from SMW
Fire Charge
Final Impact
Spin Attack

Abilitys luigi:
Skidding jump
Power jump
Spinning summersalt
EXPx2 Luigi Spicific
FlameThrower
Power-Boost
Item storage
Stock Up
Power-Mixing
Gold leaf

Abilitys Yoshi:
Flutter Jump
Ground Pound
Super Jump
Fire Spitter
Yoshi Stomp
EXPx2 Yoshi Spicific
Fire Stomp

Abilitys Wario:
Wario Ram
EXPx2 Wario Spicific
COINx2
Jump Slam
Theft
Last Resort
Crawl

Abilitys Peach/Daisy:
Float
EXPx2 Peach Spicific
EXPx2 Daisy Spicific
Jump Hight Increase
Speed Increase
Float Time Increase
Parasol
Royal Decree

Abilitys Toad:
Hyper Jump
EXPx2 Toad Spicific
Water-Run
Quick Stop
Smash Dash
Hyper activity
Mad Dash

now the list doesnt tell you what they each do I know but I will awnser any PM's about them But please Only Post If You Are Willing To Participate In this Hack. If you like the ideas please PM Me and I will give you thanks in return (as I like it when people like my ideas.)

AGAIN ONLY POST IF YOU ARE WILLING TO PARTICIPATE IN ANYWAY SHAPE OR FORM.

Also looking for someone to check my spelling as often as possible to correct my spelling both in this thread (Spicificly) Or it the text of the games desighn.

I don't think the SMB3 hacking community is even close to being able to do what you're demanding for the features. Do you realise how hard it would be to code half the things you've listed? You'd be easier coding a game from scratch.

How would you plan to implement an experience system? How would you implement unlockables into the current system? How would you add other characters to SMB3 and what about their abilities, how would make them seperate from power-ups? Theres so many things that you haven't thought of probably. There isn't any way those would work as far as I know. Like I said, if you're actually wanting to go through with this the best way to get it done would not be through hacking SMB3, but by starting your own game from scratch.

Although I could be wrong about SMB3 hacking, but it really does seem like 75% of this would be impossible to do through ROM hacking, sorry to say, but if not, someone can correct me.

If you want to "unlock" things, it follows that you have to save somehow. While making a game savable is not impossible, it brings up other problems, like what memory spots you're going to use for new items and other variables. You need memory bytes that are sure to be never used, which means you need to know virtually all the memory usage of the game. Quite a job...

Actually DD managed to add new abilitys and such and he even added an Experience system. (at least in a video I saw) but your probably right there is so much even I highly doubt it will all fit (but if we try we might sucseed)
You do relize tough starting a game from scratch would meet the same end due to the fact I desire to use the same basics as SMB3 it would be unwise to make one from scratch unless done with Gamemaker7 which I have little talent for right now.

oh by the way it is possible to add more characters Check Mario Vs. Luigi DD's rom hack he made luigi and mario two separete characters each with thier own moves and abilitys. he even added 8 more worlds (not that he finnished them all.) to allow mario and luigi have separate levels and whatnot so dont tell me whats impossible just tell me if it wont all fit. (in Which case downsizing will be nesassary.)

Unlockables... Duh You need to save and obviously that would be thought of by the ASM hackers Before they join however it can be done... the probability though is questionable.

Oh and by the way since halve the portion of unlockables is abilitys and abilitys are mostly desided by level then (all but a few) we could use just 1 variable per character for both level and the abilitys they have (for level based abilitys)

however equipment is going to be a little harder than that so I should wish myself luck on keeping that one...

MarioFan, being enthusiasm is a good thing, and your ideas are cool, but ASM is not a trivial thing...
And not everyone is as skilled as Dark Dhaiz... Let alone with Mario 3...

What you're aiming for needs several things all at once...

You need good knowledge of ASM...
PLUS, very deep knowledge of the specific ROM...
PLUS, deep knowledge of how the NES works...
PLUS, some free time...
PLUS, motivation...

You'll be hard-pressed to find a group of hackers willing to join this project when the person coordinating the project has unrealistic expectations. A good rule-of-thumb is that if you haven't seen the specific ASM hack feature in a few different hacks already, you probably won't find someone willing to do it for you.
As Trax said, you're quite enthusiastic which is good, but you need to do a bit more research and tinkering so you can better grasp what is actually possible with an SMB3 ROM.

You should skim that all down to still only having Mario, putting in a save system, and getting rid of all of the features except:
Unlockables
EXP system (Ummmm guys, it already tracks score, that's totally possible)
Money system (Again, the game already tracks coins. optomon and I are doing a variation of this in CV3 using the score, I'm sure the same effect is possible)
New Enemies
New Powerups

For your EXP system, make 3 levels instead of 5, increase the EXP needed.

Your 3 abilities you get from EXP can be, in this order
Spin Attack
Triple Jump
Fireball Charge

These elements would take a lot of time, skill, and patience to code naturally, but they would all be possible. I personally would suggest a couple of things if you ever want to see at least this much see the light of day.
Take less of a Director's approach. If this is a collaboration, then you're working with people. They aren't working for you. You should be working your tail off just as much.
Learn at least some basic fundamentals about ASM hacking, you should at least be able to know enough to help figure out problems.
Don't shoot for the moon. Think of a few strong features and base your hack around those, if there's room and at least one person skillfull enough to do it, then the other stuff can come later.

Ok what is wrong with wanting to push this game to its limits and ive seen RPG's on the NES so a level system and equipment and stuff would not be that hard but of cource seeing your points I see that rathar then downsizing I would need to cut a few things out (or alot) then decide whether to fit more or not. as for my knowledge with ASM hacking Im hoping to learn from those who join in so I can actually help with that. while I have sucsessfully ported spindash from sonic 2 to sonic 1 I have no idea what most of the stuff I did actually ment so...

but again I know its extreemly hard and everything must be taken into cosideration but I have yet to see all the problems... (so keep posting you guys I need a list.)

*jumps up and down* I wish I could hack again, but I can't D: I did some of this in Luigi's Coin Quest and this was very close to what my final product was meant to be. Sigh, real life has taken up so much of my time.

Can you teach me how to ASM hack SMB3?
Do you have a list of information inside of the SMB3 rom I can have?

ive seen RPG's on the NES so a level system and equipment and stuff would not be that hard

The fact some others commercial games feature some specific things does NOT mean it'd be easy to implement the same things in another game (not to mention through hacking).
That'd be almost like saying "Adding 5-player support to Super Mario Kart would be easy, because Super Bomberman 5 does it on the same console". Yeah?
If you can't understand that much, then you have a lot to learn.

I just happen to see this post is all. I still lurk around the forums. Like I said, I've been busy doing other stuff. Working, a ministry website, girlfriend, etc. I tried to get back into rom hacking last summer, but as soon as summer was over I had to leave my projects, again. I just can't devote myself to it anymore like I used to. I still have my SMB 3 editor I work on every now and then.

Teach you ASM: hacking, no.
SMB3 Notes: I doubt I still have them.

ok so yea...

points seen and again not that easy.

DD will you teach me ASM coding spicificly for SMB3 hacking Ive been dying to learn. and all you really have to do is send me quite a bit of information Like information about the SMB3 rom ill need, how to use a debugger, and the basics of ASM hacking. like ive said ive managed to port spidash to sonic 1 so i should know a little (but not all) Im willing to learn and I know your busy so Its your desicion but it would be a nice thing to do and would probably have a decent end result. a few more ASM hacks of SMB3 and possibly SMW.

I hope you will be kind enough to let me down gently though so.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the time to teach anyone how to hack. I spend more time programming/web site design anyways and switching between ASM hacking and programming in C# would through my brain into meltdown.

I knew you would turn me down... Oh well the offer still stands (to anyone who can)

but do you have any information that might prove useful such as some of the codes inside the game that you use for coding this sort of thing. (dont worry I cant use them yet so...)

again Im really hoping to do the ASM myself but cant If I had someone to teach me that would help alot.

MarioFan0, you should learn ASM first, learn the Opcodes, what they do, how the hexadecimal values translate into the game actually working, then learn how the NES system works, like IO ports, sound channels, controller input, CPU memmory, PPU memory, table names, sprites, palettes. And of course, learn how mappers work. It is possible to make a game use another mapper for expansion purposes, but it's not trivial...

When you know all of this, you'll be able to see what is easy to implement and what is not. And why...

If I was into Mario 3, I would probably try stuff, but I'm more interested into other games for now. It doesn't mean I won't ever disassemble the Mario 3 ROM. Imagine you could have all the data in existence about Mario 3, but you don't know how to interpret the contents? Can you read disassembled 6502 code? Can you make sense of it? Most people here learn by themselves, by reading docs and trial-and-error. If you have relevant questions about it, you can ask here, or visit IRC channels related to ROM Hacking...

Somehow, I doubt you'll learn 6502 assembly in college. It's possible, but I can't imagine it. NES mappers are even more unlikely to crop up, let alone the NES memory map itself.

I'd think the internet is your better chance.

In college, they usually try to teach you recent-enough stuff that you're likely going to need in real life. Stuff that companies need. ASM may be mentioned for historical reasons, but rarely ever taught there.
You won't learn anything if you just wait with your mouth wide open, waiting to be fed. You need to move and learn on your own, find the data you need, and mess with it yourself. A good idea is to start with something as simple as possible. Like, at the moment, would you be able to do something as trivial as changing Mario's name...?

By the way, I had skimmed through this thread and didn't really read the first post, but pompous comments like "ASM hackers will all follow my instructions" crack me up, and make think the people here got softer, and have really been going easy on you.
