Elitemap or Advancemap proberly. Those editors edit character sprites.

AdvanceMap is a hell of a lot better than EliteMap, I'd go with that. Plus it's still updated regularly.

You do realise that, for character graphics, you'd be best off with a graphics editor, right? Say, Tile Molester?

I mean, sure, you get Tile Layer Pro with EliteMap, but downloading a Pokémon editor (no matter which one) to "try it first with a mario game" is NOT a good idea.

There is no exe, it's a Java program, you just run tm.jar.

That is, assuming you have the Java runtime to run it with in the first place. Google is your friend.

On one hand, I hate it when you need external crap to run your editors. On the other, it's a privilege to have editors in the first place, and you shouldn't complain if it takes you another 10 minutes to grab something else needed to start your hex-free hacking.

Not that there's anything wrong with hex-hacking... unless it's graphics. Then it's just a silly idea to even try. But in general, hex-hacking can be a valuable skill to have.

I agree, but I once made an SMB3 level in pure hex once, that was... humbling, to say the least. When you need to set something up in a special way (like freeing up space, say, moving a room in Super Metroid so you can make it bigger) you'd need to point to somewhere else in the rom and SMILE at the time didn't offer that feature.

Other than that, if there is an editor for something you are currently doing in hex, it's probably a great idea to grab it since you're greatly reducing redundant work.

I can't imagine hacking pokemon in hex...

Been there, done that. Mostly trainer data, but you'd be amazed how straightforward the map data is...
