Mega Man Forever is the name of the Mega Man 4 hack i have been working on for a long, long time.
I'm now releasing a demo which lets you play the introduction stage, which is very much complete.

Download: http://acmlm.no-ip.org/uploader/get.php?id=277

This demo includes:
* New music
* Weapon swap with Select button. (Change between Buster and Rush Coil)
* New features coded from scratch
* Many smal gameplay-based hacks

Screenshots. For best experience, play, dont look!

All progress will be posted in that journal.

Im doing new music, original weapons, and are planning on new robot masters.
Tons of ASM hacking has already been done, for various new features, including changing how the course of the game goes, and implementing cutscenes with dialogue at various times. The story is still in the works, but i have put together my ideas to something that might work out.

As im sure everyone will ask, the progress of this hack is about 50%. Next, i will be working on MegaFLE X a bit, to implement a sprite editor, which i need for this project. And maybe then i'll release a new version of MegaFLE X.

Enjoy!

edit2: I guess img tag inside spoiler tag didnt work.

Holy shit.

I love the new weapons, it makes me want to... do whatever might be necessary to play this. Like, kill maybe?

I love the Solar Lazer. It's only a matter of time until Gradius weapons make it into a MM hack. Jolt Leader is freaking awesome too, though I see a lot of boss spamming with this weapon. I know it's got a huge energy consumption rate, but still...

Cool!

I'm surpised you lasted this long for just a one level hack. Every one across the globe should enjoy this.

I should think about releasing one beta level for my MM1 hack on Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I'm going to give this a try right now! Pan, I didn't think you were going to release anything until it was complete.

Yeah, alot of people said it seems over-powered. However its pretty difficult to control it when you have to move around and avoid being hit at the same time. Especially in sections which scrolls horizontally.

Originally, i wasnt planning on doing a demo at all. So not until a few months ago, i started working on completing the intro stage and everything needed for this demo.

My first run through it, when I got up to the door where you had to enter the passcode, the game froze on me. I had to reset and start all over.

Difficulty-wise, I felt it was a bit difficult, and unfair in certain areas. Such as the room where you had to use the Rush Coil to get the passcode, I tried falling from the ladder, but I hit the spikes.

The room where you had to climb the ladders to get a passcode, was a bit unfair too. One hit on the ladder, could screw you completely. Once they are above your head, you have no choice but to re-enter the room and try again.

And the beginning of the level, where you had to jump ladder to ladder, all of those enemies coming at you. Too many of them clumped together. I got by when they knocked me down, and I just slid on the spikes.

The 1-up next to that eye-ring enemy is a little unfair jump.

- Music was great.
- Graphics were good. It was a little hard to distinguish the background from the solid foreground tiles at times.
- I liked the intro stage, reminded me of MM7 and MM&B.
- I felt the spinning-metools health was a bit much. I felt that a fully-charged shot should kill it. But it took more than that. I like that they couldn't be killed with one or two shots, but I felt the maximum health should've been equivilant to a fully-charged shot.
- The skeleton guys at the beginning of the level, the game started to flicker and have that slowdown. There was too much going on there. Maybe take one or two of them out?

Other than that, it was okay.

Ah very awesome. I Like it that there's multiple ways to go. I haven't managed to beat the boss yet (that big ground crushing thing from cossack 1 originally)

I noticed that the item drop rate seemed to be 100% or something, cause I don't think there was ever a time that a enemy wouldn't drop something. Did you change that? I know you'd have to fit in the little bolt items, but ah well.

The game over screen really freaked me out with how the game over music originally in mm4, you like made it more higher pitched and freaky-ish and the gigantic letters

I recently had just added text scripting to my hack too, so that I can initiate a text box at the bottom of the screen anywhere, anytime in the game I want to with no trouble at all. Even with a fancy window border around the text.

That game freeze I had, could it have been because of the order in which I visited the passcode machines?

It should not. It never happened during the play-troughs i did, but im going to see if i can find that freeze.

Its fun to launch a charged shot at those for mass-destruction. But i agree, there's too many for ideal stage design, i'll probably change them to appear less frequent.

- The skeleton guys at the beginning of the level, the game started to flicker and have that slowdown. There was too much going on there. Maybe take one or two of them out?

Hopefully, i can make the game faster by rewriting and optimizing some of the routines in MM4. Although that doesn't reduce flickering. Oh well.

Thanks for the rest of the input. I've been thinking of implementing an Easy mode eventually, where some screens are less challenging and there are less enemies. But i dont want to get overly ambitious, with implementing ideas and then getting it all to work together.

Yeah, i made it so a metal is dropped whenever the enemy would normally not drop anything. Also in the jump-table for items i simply over-wrote the address for e-tanks.

Sounds awesome. Its a pain to work with CHR-RAM.
For the password input text i had to plan alot to organize the tiles so everything would work together.

First off, let me say, this is shaping up to be the best Mega Man hack ever. You're crossing the bridge between "hack" and "new game", which I think really sets this on a whole different level. The little cutscene in the middle was a really nice touch, and I was really surprised by the MMX style "Warning!" before the boss. My only complaint with the demo is a level design thing.

This room. Consider doing something else in it. The jumps aren't impossible, but if the platforms aren't higher than the spikes, it's like way too easy to accidentally touch them from just trying to make the jump.

Which is why I'm moving Mega Man: Fully Loaded over to MM4. You have also inspired me to work much harder on my hack.

Impressive. I would give criticism, but I would merely be echoing Logical Operand and Dr. Hell/Mario.

What the heck is with the secret
Spoiler:
room to right of the of the room with the water? The door in it doesn't open and no indication on how to do so is present.

Also, I wouldn't worry about having overpowered weapons, as long as they are equally overpowered. If you try nerfing the weapons you'll probably end up with an arsenal as useless as MM5's.

Though I haven't got far yet, I must say I'm very impressed by what I've seen. But yeah, I have to second Dr. Hell's observation about the jumps - or one-pixel jumps in general, as also seen in the room below the one with the second codeword letter. It's all too easy to slip and painfully land on the rear end of the bottom grue.

Well for my megaman 4 hack that never went anywhere, I decided that I wanted players to search for items and upgrades, so what I did was I used the wire and balloon item and used them to add weapons and items instead of killing bosses. What happens is you kill a boss, get it's key, then return and find a robot that makes a path open where you can find the weapon. Also in that level is an upgrade. The 3 rush items, plus wire and balloon are there, but also there is what I call a Buster Shortcut, which allows you to use a fully charged buster shot anywhere, anytime, and with any other weapon equipped. Second, there's the spike guard that lets you walk on spikes when your buster is fully charged. Lastly, there is a speed upgrade that also works while the buster is charged. You sacrifice the ability to attack for extra mobility.

Also added was a double jump and a grapple upgrade. The double jump does what it says, and the grapple upgrade lets the wire attach to ladders so you can pull yourself up in spaces that are so tight that the balloon and regular wire couldn't reach.

The plot was that Cossack wanted to be smarter than Wily, and had each robot keep it's energy source locked away in it's lair. Using remote technology, the robot master could use energy from that core, and megaman could not get the weapon.

Anyway, seeing as how this hack(matrixz's) is going to emphasise exploration, I suggest a similar feature where perhaps extra upgrades can be found. Perhaps weapons could be upgraded this way too. It seems some sort of currency system is in place, so adding power that way could work too. Also Heart Tanks, gotta have heart tanks.

A few points:

1. Love the game over screen
2. Interesting coincidence: I've been humming the boss music you coopted for this hack for days now and trying to remember which Mega Man game it was from. Then I remembered and thought, "that would be great if someone used it for a hack or something." And here we are!
3. I agree with the spinning hard hats taking too many shots to kill, but that may just be my personal taste.
4. There's a bit of discrepancy between the charge meter and the actual charged shot; it's still timed to whenever the charge sound effect finishes, so you can hold down B until the charge meter is completely full and still release only a half-charged megabuster.

Great work, this is shaping up to be one of, if not the best Mega/Rock Man hacks I've ever seen. Keep us posted!
