I have 58 game overs, and except for one instance where I had to read the read me to find one of the magic containers, I've been mostly doing this without his help. But I haven't even completed the game yet.

I'm royally stuck and am missing two spells (fairy and spell) and two items (the glove and the magic key). There are like a million areas that seem totally pointless once you get the boots and explore even more of the map.

- There's a difference between "having a larger impact and getting it more involved in gameplay" and totally demolishing your hard earned exp. If you want it to still have an impact, try lowering it to 3 exp points per hit instead of 10 the beginning, and maybe up to 5 or 10 exp instead of 20 nearer the end.

From what I know, experience stealing is completely hard-coded. It's just a simple if statement that applies for the entire game. If the enemy has its Steal Experience bit set, then the code just checks if the enemy is a Moa. If it is, lose 20 points, else lose 10. That's it. The routine can easily be modified to anything else, but I don't think Ice Penguin had enough knowledge of it at the time...

- Still, it's possible to give infinite lives to the player, regardless of whether what you originally planned worked out. It may seem too easy at the beginning of the game, but nearer the end, I think a lot of people are going to get fed up with dying and returning to the starting palace. And I know you think this hack is easy enough to play without it, but you know every nook and cranny of it yourself. Exploration in the more deadly areas isn't fun.

Although I understand how it's frustrating to have to start over when you die, aren't all Zelda games (and many others) like this? If you can't really be Game Over, where's the challenge? All other Zelda games don't even have a lives system...

I presume it's fair to have lives in Zelda II since it's possibly the only of the series where you can die instantly. Compare this to Ocarina of Time, in which Link is litterally invincible even if he falls from the top of Death Mountain. The only thing I always despised about Zelda II is that the continue option is almost totally useless. In Zelda I, if you die in a Dungeon, you can at least hit continue and start at the beginning of the dungeon. In Zelda II, it works only if you are in the last Palace. However, this could also be hacked quite easily...

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

I reckon your next step is to find the Wacky Palace, which has a power bracelet (aka the glove), after which it gains u access to the Magic Potion for the Fairy Spell.

The Wacky Palace is hidden just like the original Zelda 2's Palace 6. Blow the flute in the desert region directly south of the dock in Eastern Hyrule.

I already found it. Such a horribly unfair secret.

EDIT: I'm at 76 game overs now, mainly because of the green palace and getting the item in it. I'm pretty close to finishing the game. Also, there is a room in the second palace that, as far as I can tell, is completely pointless. It irritates me because I wasted a key on it.

DOUBLE EDIT: 82 game overs. The "everything you know is wrong" palace is really easy to die in and I haven't passed it yet. The fairy spell eats up way too much magic, I don't know how many times I'm forced to kill myself because I'm a few bars short of the fairy spell. Right after the part where you have to use fairy over is another part that requires refelct, and unless I want to kill bits for 15 minutes straight and go crazy, I'm not going to have enough magic for it unless I kill myself.

It sounds like a one or two byte change to me, and not hard at all to find. If Ice Penguin ever opted to change these values, I'd help find the bytes for him if needed.

Are modern action/exploration games with the checkpoint system, like Halo, Prince of Persia, etc., considered unchallenging? The point is, many people HATED Zelda II, and while I wasn't really among these people, I can certainly see where a lot of players who weren't Zelda fanatics could become ticked off nearer the end of the game, being thrown back to the starting palace after a long trek back to the harder sections only to die again. I do realize that it takes away a lot of the challenge, but it's my view that this challenge you speak of -- getting thrown back to the beginning -- isn't that fun to start with.

And begging your pardon, Zelda II is nothing like other Zelda games, where you restart at the last dungeon you died in and there are no instant deaths. My argument is that Zelda II's system of throwing you all the way back to the beginning is too frustrating for most people to find it fun, which is part of why it's so unpopular among average gamers and non-Zelda fanatics.

I completely agree, except for it being "hacked quite easily." If it could be done, I'd totally prefer this to the current system, or to my proposed infinite lives.

But I've already said enough... I'll shut up now.

hey Doug, it's me from the FAQs!

I don't know if you read my message yet, but I finished this game last night(easy version)

Alot of the people here make good points, ESPECIALLY as far as clues to item locations(and the Wacky Palace).

Also, my emulator allows me to rewind. Meaning if I die or waste magic or make any other mistake will exploring, I can just hold the L button for a second or two. It saved me so much time and frustration. (not that it made finding things any easier ;P)

Version 1.3!
Version 1.4!

I made things easier in the Easy Version. I reduced lava/water pits, and also reduced the enemy encounter rate.
For the Hard version, I completely redesigned the Great Palace. It's intense now.

I'm still working on making new hints... even though it's too late.

Cool, glad to see you're still working on things.
I'll give this one a try right away.

Like it a lot. I think Zelda II is underrated (and similarly to Faxanadu, a hack of that would be great...)

It works perfectly in mednafen 0.8.9 (on Ubuntu 8.10 beta).

Anyway, going to try out the new patch. I admit to playing the easy version...
And I'm totally lost, but it's part of the fun. Yay candle and JUMP!

Version 1.3!
Wait, which palace is this in?

The silly/wacky/checkerboard palace. I initially killed the first boss and game overed on the second boss, which is the glitchy looking one you use reflect on. I had to play through the whole level on, and after the fairy part over the long pit, I dont have enough magic to fight the boss (unless I want to tediously kill the red bits over and over again). Unless I'm missing something...

Anyway I'm up to the last palace now, and haven't touched the game in a good while. I'll finish soon enough though. And I'm glad to hear you are thoroughly making revisions.

FranMichaels, thanks for the comment! It's good to know people like my hack.

optomon, they are invisible, but there are red jars hidden throughout the Wacky Palace. (and they aren't in breakable blocks, so stab the air in weird places)

Also, in the 1.4 update, I reduced magic consumption.

The Sand Palace is in the graveyard surrounded by mountains. there's a pit near Link's Tomb.

unless, you mean the Wacky Palace.

I have been stuck in the Graveyard Palace for some time now. I can't find the key to the 3rd locked door, the one guarded by 2 blue iron knuckles.
I can see 3 more keys in the palace but they all seem to be out of reach: 2 under blocks in the rooms with crumbling bridges, and 1 near the entrance on a high ledge with an illusionary wall under it that leads to nowhere. Any help would be much appreciated!

Great hack BTW, I'm enjoying it alot

There's a trick you have to do with an elevator to get that one. In one of the rooms that has an elevator, use it to go up into a room that has Bots and breakable blocks(there's 4 total with that layout, only 1 leads to the key), you shouldn't be able to go any higher... or can you?
Get off and on the elevator rapidly until it goes up into a false wall(there's a rupee there if you want it), then drop back down and fall into the elevator shaft like a pit.

Bingo.

Wow, that was really hard to find! It almost felt more like exploiting a bug than using the intended method. Thanks
