I've not heard of that Rock 'n Maxx hack before. Especially with regard to Japanese hacks, there are way too many good hacks that most non-Japanese never hear about (like Extra Mario Bros). Perhaps there should be a thread for people to post about cool hacks they've come across? I'm sure there are a lot of good ones, and the hack release forum isn't a good place to just be like 'Hey, look at this hack I found.' Meh, just an idea.

SMB3 does something similar too. It displays the status bar with tiles that are not even in the graphics page currently loaded into the PPU, such as being in a level. How does this work? If I knew, I could use it to my advantage.

i'm not sure if smb3 does this, but some games have an irq triggered at a specific scanline and write to the mapper's register that controls the chr-rom upper address lines (aka bank swapping). if the statusbar is at the top or there is no mapper irq available, the game may use a sprite0 hit instead.

sprite0 won't work as well if you need the statusbar at the bottom, since you have to keep polling $2002.

Do you think that is how he did it in MMU2? Because if you open up MM4, and look in the PPU Viewer, you can clearly see that the graphics bank changes. The weapons icons are only in the PPU when you open up the menu. But when you go back to the level, the PPU loads the level graphics again. Yet, he was able to display those weapon icons on the level. I couldn't figure that one out.

well the game uses chr-ram so it'd be a little different then the method i described. i don't think he used the irq since the status bar is down the side of the screen, not across like smb3.

i haven't played mmu2, but my guess is that he set aside 4 tiles and whenever the player exits the menu they are updated to reflect the weapon in use. then hack the oam cycling routine so your weapon indicator does't receive the flicker treatment. at least that's how i'd do it.

Cool man. Thanks for the information. Oh, and MMU2 isn't out yet, but you can see by looking at the trailers for it on YouTube, what I am talking about.

And I agree with NetSplit about the whole Japanese hacks thing. We do need a thread like that. And I have never heard of Rock n' Maxx before either. I sent Insectduel a PM, because I searched on Google, and everywhere, and I couldn't find where this hack is located. If it is on a Japanese site, that could be the reason why. But I would certainly like to see it.

Not to draw attention away from your thread, but my copy of Megaman 4 has been severely altered by kuja killer from the ground up. for 1, it's expanded to it's maximum size, and he converted it from CHR-RAM to CHR-ROM. I don't want to share any more details, but when the hack is released, you'll see how things are setup in my rom. Completely different from the traditional Megaman 4 rom. If kuja himself wants to share what he did, that's just as fine.

CHR-RAM sucks. If my game was CHR-ROM, I would have gotten the graphics swap done already. That's the only reason I have coded it yet, because it's going to be a big pain. Anyway, I pulled the screenshots and trailers for now, because I'm doing major work on the game, and they are no longer valid. The nostalgic mario/zelda levels idea have been scrapped, and finally, Dash has a full head of hair. I'm not showing anything more for a long time now. It's time for me to work hard on this hack and get it done.
