Hello people,

I'm interested in composing original music for ROM Hacks, especially for any Mario/Mega Man series or some moody/orchestral RPG tracks. Ideally, I would like to be able to work with a standard MIDI format and later port it to the specific music engine.

So, what I would like to know is what games have extensive documentation on the music engine or, even best, specific tools to deal with it? I'm mainly interested in the NES and SNES (on that order), and I would love to work along some talented ROM Hackers.

I have extensive musical training and used to compose a lot many from age 13-16. I lost most of my stuff in hard-drive crashes, but here is one very old track I composed 7 years ago: Link. This was done when I was listening a lot of prog music, but nowadays my musical taste is much more wide.

I'm looking forward to see what I can compose for those platforms!

Sappy has extensive documentation and is used in most GBA games from Japan.

Also, the N-SPC engine from a load of SNES games. Ask Blackhole.

Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest have their music data sorta documented fully. Sliver X (was Silver X) also made a small tutorial which explained how to modify other NES games' music.

The addmusic toolchain built around SMW's native music format allows for importing MIDIs, though everything past that point is a bit awkward to handle.

Also, this. I might actually get over myself and start having people do beta tests one of these days...

Think of all the fame you could have had if you would have finished this a few years back. I still remember my excitement over the original announcement.
In fact, after my year of dormancy, the first thing I checked for was whether or not SS was finished...

Back on topic though, in terms of fanbase, SMW might be the way to go. Provided you can deal with the limitations, your music would reach alot of ears.

Geh, the problem with making music for SMW is being able to make it good when you convert the midi into something addmusic can insert.

Since smkdan gave us the sample-changing utility, there is quite a bit more power over the sound of your music, but messing with .mml files is still irritating.

...there is a problem that there are very few samples that aren't shared by sound effects. However, there was a tool found that can change sound effects and instruments, but it requires knowledge of raw SPC commands. Here it is.

Its a shame that more interest hasn't been put into this tool, its quite nifty in my opinion.

I had noticed that myself about a month back and even have a copy of it on my computer, unfortunately I never translated the readme, so I just left the file to sit. :p

Hm? That seems to be a contradiction; saying it's both partially and fully documented... at the same time.

Well, I don't remember if he hands you a silver platter with every offset available, or how deep he goes into the explanation of notes converting to bits and bytes, but I know there's enough there to get you started ^^;;

Thanks, I guess I'll start by checking out the SMW tools.

I also gave a quick look at the SMB Disassembly by doppelganger and there's plenty of music info there, so maybe I'll try something with it. Is there any tool for it?

I have never gone by the name "Silver X".

For Dragon Warrior, I simply listed a few offsets for a handful of songs: The rest needs to be figured out (I wasn't nearly as good at hacking when I rescored DW)... However, 98% of the music format itself is documented (Sans the pointers).

The Final Fantasy and Castlevania documenation I did lists the pointer tables for each song's channels.

You can find my documents here.

Also, here's an example of what I did to Final Fantasy's soundtrack.

I haven't played yet your Final Fantasy hack, but I like the overall quality of your soundtrack! Do you know any other NES hack with such extensive music editing (especially original music)?

I have began working on some notes for Super Mario64 sequenced music format. Don't know how far I will get, but I have figured already the pitch table, and how to change some dynamics/rhytms. I will upload some notes in a few days, if anyone is interested.

This is a list of everything with sound changes in ROMhacking.net's database.

Note that a lot of them are crap, like anything Jomb has done. I notice Zelda Challenge is on there, which only has like one byte changed to alter the waveform in the title screen's song.

Some I can think of off the top of my head that are worth checking out:

Castlevania: Chorus of Mysteries

Dragoon X Omega (Shitty, but hey, I think I was like the second person to even hack an NES game's music at that point).

Dragoon X Omega II: You've already heard this, basically.

Mario Fantasy Adventure

My Nuts & Milk hack called Donkey Kong 2 has the music hacked in the game with entire song changes. They are not original songs but they are composed from tabs. Also in the DOCs there are other songs you can plug in to the music section such as a Jackson 5 song and .... I forget but it's there.
Just FYI.
