First let me give a brief introduction of me

I'm another one of those teenagers that loves to hack SMW with Lunar Magic, and I got basic experience in finding offsets in ROMs although, I'm not an awesome ASM hacker, not at all. Anyways, I know how to program in C# and Visual Basic (I prefer C#), and I can do slightly advanced things in both, I once made a simple enemy editor for Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, it could edit the HP of like three enemies I found and save them back to the ROM converted to hex. I can work with the picturebox object and do a lot of things with it.

Anyways, to really master the thing, one needs experience, and I'm not really sure with what game to begin with. Some tell me a NES game would be easy enough, others tell me SNES games are easier to edit, and I really have no idea which to edit. For a first time, I would prefer a game that has already been hacked enough and there are enough documents about how to hack it. Any such game? Documents I should read?

Thanks.

I was always told that NES games are easier to work with instead of SNES games. Well, if you want take a look at Data Crystal, there's data for various games there. So yeah, look around the site and find a game that'll tickles your fancy.

There's no point staying behind with all the current hackers, jump straight to N64 roms. Crack open Super Smash Brothers and try and rip some levels from it, or design some sort of editor for it. Or just find any data at all. Rom hacking for games made pre-2000 is dead, for all intensive purposes, so get with the times before the rest of the community, so to speak.

How about providing a reason or an explanation for this? At least then it would be considerable.

I don't have much knowledge in ROM hacking. I'm pretty sure jumping to the N64 isn't a good idea. Also, I couldn't find a NES game I'd feel comfortable hacking. How about GB/GBC games? I would attempt to hack a non-documented game if I were to find a good z80 ASM tutorial.

Try to find some stuff in Minish Cap, there is no editor, and I've been told the data is uncompressed .

Which makes you wonder why there's no editor in the first place.

Start with NES... Definitely...
Learning ASM for the 6502 is not too hard and a good start if you want to learn the basics...

C# eh? Help DahrkDaiz with his SMB3 editor (maybe help him make it compatible with SMAS-SMB3 ).

Also, Arbe, it's "for all intents and purposes" not "for all intensive purposes".

Yeah well, I was thinking on gameboy games instead. I already got a few documents ready on the ASM so, I guess I'll start with the gameboy.

Thanks for the suggestion everybody!

Well, if you ever finish with openpoke...

My suggestion?

Start with a game you like.

(Also, GBA hacking is pretty easy to get started with, too)

If it was me, I'd start with the NES, there are so many classics that are screaming for editors. Please consider some of these editors, the DOS ones would be really good to see in Windows, etc.

I agree that GBC is a good system to start hacking with. In particular, some games like Pokemon G/S have been hacked to oblivion.

Rom hacking for games made pre-2000 is dead

Really? Actually, I have trouble finding any post-2000 hacks here. (And even Super Smash Bros is pre-2000...)
Solid 2D games are more "timeless" than early 3D ones...

Most easy system to be helped with and it's pretty easy to understand and hack.

Super Mario World indeed might be a good point of starting. It might well be the one game with the most advanced and polished editor having been made out there, contains none of the tricky aspects of RPGs and holds considerably more possibilities than NES games. Additionally, framework software like Blocktool and Sprtool allows one to make a "soft", guided kind of entry into assembly hacking and the other higher tiers of ROM manipulation.
If you, on the other hand, seek to start off with "proper hacking" right away, one of the numberless obscure puzzle games for the NES might be a good choice since they are straightforward enough to hack and exist in vast numbers.
