I asked this before on the channel, but you lose track easily when everybody's talking at the same damn time, so I'm just trying again here.

Basically, every official game has had a grass-, water- and fire-type monster as a possible starter, except for Yellow. What I'd like is something more original than that, but preferably with a similar rock-paper-scissors relation.

Full triplets only please.

Rock, Fighting, and Flying would work. (i.e. Geodude, Machop, and Pidgey)

Hmm, does Psychic/Dark/Ghost work? ...hmm maybe not
It's been a while since I last played a pokemon game...
Maybe...Electric/Ground/Water? Elekid/Geodude/Azurill?

Ice, Flying, and Electric. I'd like that. I don't know what you'd actually have for each one though .. it can be hard to balance pokemon out.

Ghost, Ghost, Ghost.
Steel, Rock, Fire.

Just a few ideas.

Something more original I have.

Dark, Psychic, and Fighting. Think about it.

Dark weaken Psychic, but strong against Fighting.
Psychic weaken Fighting, but VERY strong against Dark.
Fighting weaken Dark, but strong against Psychic.

It would seem according to the chart that this would not be a fair fight for psychic. Following in the pokemon tradition, I presume your rival chooses the pokemon with a type dominant over yours. The only problem with Psychic-Dark-Fighting is that Dark is immune to psychic. There would be no way to win any fights against a dark pokemon with a psychic pokemon unless it had a different type attack to begin with.

Most of the startes are dual typed though.

That's not a valid triplet, Elec/Ice are both super-effective against Flying...and that's it. It has to be "type 1 > type 2 > type 3 > type 1"
Also, Insectduel, your triplet is a valid one but your explanation as to why is way off. It's also a copy of Gywall's, so...

Ice, Fighting, Flying. --> Ice > Flying > Fighting > Ice
Valid
Suggested Pokes: Spheal (Ice/Water), Pidgey (Flying/Normal), Machop (Fighting)

Psychic, Dark, Fighting. --> Psychic > Fighting > Dark > Psychic
Valid
Suggested Pokes: Ralts (Psychic), Machop (Fighting), Sneasel (Dark/Ice)

Dragon, Dragon, Dragon. --> ...
Invalid
1) Not a triplet, only a single type
2) Not a triangle, each type is super effective against the others and itself

Ghost, Ghost, Ghost. --> ...
Invalid
See Dragon*3

Steel, Rock, Fire. --> Fire > Steel, Rock > Fire, Steel > None
Invalid

Electric/Ground/Water --> Electric > Water > Ground > Electric
Valid
Suggested Pokes: Elekid (Electric), Azurill (Water), Geodude (Ground/Rock)

I wouldn't advise Machop or Geodude for starters, unless there's going to be a way to get trade-only evolutions without trading.

That said, I would love to see a Poison, Grass, Ground trio, but unfortunately those types don't really have the Pokemon to make it work out without having a second type that either overlaps one of the others or completely wrecks the rock-paper-scissors style.

How about Grass/Dark, Fire/Psychic, and Water/Fighting? Now I know it sounds a bit wierd and not quite following the usual trend, but think about it. Each of them is stronger, and weaker than the others at the same time, and rather than being a simple matter of Fire>Grass>Water>Fire, it is instead: Fire>Grass>Water>Fire and Psychic
Now, on the other hand, if you're using existing pokemon, I have no decent ideas.

I see you've not done your homework.

Steel type moves are super effective on Rock and Ice types.
Steel moves are terrible against water, fire, electric and steel.

So Steel > Rock.
Argue all you like, but it's true.

Azurill is a Normal type Pokémon.

Poison: Nidoran, Nidorina/Nidorino, Nidoqueen/Nidoking.
Grass: Hoppip, Skiploom, Jumpluff.
Ground: Phanpy, Donphan.

Ground is a type that doesn't resist itself, so Nidoking and Nidoqueen are fine.
Hoppip and family is Grass/Flying. Flying has no real bonus other than immunity to ground, but a fair few ground types learn rock-type moves anyway. I made sure to pick ground with rollout here.

Water->Ground->Electric won't work because Ground is immune to Electric.
Fighting->Dark->Psychic won't work because Dark is immune to Psychic.

Bug, Psychic, Fighting.

If ypu pick psychic, he picks bug.
If you pick bug, he picks fighting
if you pick fighting, he picks psychic.

Works out not too well, but not too many types share the synergy Fire/water/grass have.

Skitty and Waillord.

Oh wait, that's only two. And no rock/scissor/paper relationship.
