I rather see people calling it assembly, than calling it "ASM" too. Assembly is not too hard anyway, (especially in the context of making simple hacks) it's simpler to handle than some high level languages concepts.

Besides you can always look for someone willing with the knowledge to do it for you.

Ummm... yeah, I have asked, nobody is willing to make or do anything for me. The piranha plant really isn't that important. What I really need is an ON/OFF firebar, and a better version of a custom block I got someone to make for me.

That's a rather nice level. It's bit on the long side, but then it's a single-level contest so... heh.

Ever since I started on my project, I was disappointed that there was a Giant Koopa custom sprite, but no graphics to go with it that matched SMW Koopa Troopas. The Koopa Troopas in SMW and newer Mario games stroll around upright, but in SMB1 and SMB3 they crawled on the ground like real turtles. In my project, though, the Giant Koopas from SMB3 finally get to walk upright:

I based these graphics off of the Sledge Bros. and then just modified them as I saw fit. I think it turned out pretty well, myself. Also, note that I redid the Giant Spiny in SMB3 style, which is what the small Spinies in my game are based on.

The koopas' heads look somewhat out-of-proportion small...

I don't see the proportion being much of a problem. It does make them loom more like "fat" than "giant" however...

@Ailure/blackhole89: Yeah - I pretty much was going for a fatter look - as it is, Giant Koopas (as they are coded) are already as "tall" as regular Koopas, so there was only one direction in which to expand - sideways.

I need some fresh eyes and opinions on this. Which of the ledges on the stone pillars in the above pictures look better (brown or gray), and why? If you don't think either look good, what can I do to make them look better? Thanks!

I'd choose the brown ones because they provide higher contrast with the tower-thing. With the gray ones, it's harder to see exactly where you can step and where you can't at first glance.

The gray ones look better, as the brown ones stand out too much agains the gray tower.

EDIT: A suggestion; maybe make a block transition from brown at the top to gray at the bottom, to give it a weathered look.

Although my opinion might not be important, I'd suggest using the gray blocks, if only because it looks better, and because you might be able to only use one palette with all the gray tones if you edit the colors a little.

I prefer the brown ones, but only because they are easier to see.

I agree with BooUrns and Ailure. The gray blocks look too light for the tower, so they clash anyway in addition to being hard to see and therefore bad for gameplay.

Ok so only a mockup but the tileset design has been completed and is ready to be imported into my SMW hack.

Wow, that looks very nice!

From the looks of it, it could be used for a train-themed level. :o

train-themed level.

HMM.

Graphics based on Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land's train stages.

Looks like a train.

I think it might be a train-themed tileset. D:

But at any rate, cool!

Thanks guys,

Yes based on Wario Land level seeing as my hack is a Wario Land remake of sorts. Not great on the 2d platforming level design so chances are once the remake is done ill release it as a base hack.

Hehe, that level on Wario Land was awesome if I recall. Hadn't played Wario Land in a really really long time now...

Only nitpick I have is that block in the middle of nowhere looks so bright compared to it's surroundings.

Does this look better than either of the previous two? I just want to make sure that the ledges are easily visible. (The new blocks there also happen to be my replacement graphics for the cement block - I really like them).

That looks great andy_k, good job.
However, you might lower the contrast between the colors in the block.
