I was just wondering why none of the original (arguably more mature) acmlmboard wasn't used...

Acmlm should have the rights to use the code, and I know that acmlm.cjb.net has copies of it lying around...

Wouldn't it be easy to just add in a few database tables and copy/paste code from it?

from what I can see, this board is written completely from scratch, and shares little/no code with the original one. To me, this just seems inefficient.

I know the other board had memory issues, but implementing a few features from it shouldn't make this board any more demanding on the server...

Old board index: Over 80 queries.

New board index: About 20.

The number grows rediculously for threads; oldboard would be in the hundreds if you used a medium/high postcount per page, and this one remains similar.

More efficient queries, coding, styling, and all around love.

Trust me, I'm glad to never have to do deal with 1.b again.

1.a/b was just about as bad as "Acmlm+Erk", and had 100+ broken and unfinished files left and right.

I really want board2. .....

board2 was also 100% me until it was uploaded here, so it's not like this is XkeeperBoard or something either

But yeah, looking back at the old one after coding this is such a mess now

It just shows how much your programming has improved!

I still need work.

W3C-conforming HTML is for pussies though.

Yeah, I'm glad board 2.0 is finally out, even if many features are missing... At least it ended up happening.

Random question: does it have an admin panel yet ?

I'm quite familiar with phpmyadmin... but it's nice to have an admin panel when you have several admins on board, and don't want them to have database control.
Besides, it makes things much more convenient for some tasks...

While I certainly could port my old board1.x CP over to board2, that's quite a bit down on the priority list right now.

Yeah, of course, just wanted to know if there was already a basic panel or not...
Besides, as a board coder, shouldn't have an admin status ?

Well, I have access to the board database... kinda, but you don't even see me on staff because of that.

And well, what would a such admin panel have that wouldn't be quickly done by PMA for now? :/

Wow, why do so many people have database access?

- Quick IP searches / bans / etc
- A nice user deletion feature (that doesn't make the user's posts disappear, or maybe leaves you the choice and deletes them properly)
- A nicely formated action log (I made one for my board)
- Managing the smilies and Photo Album when there's one... You can't do that with PMA
- etc...

Your access shouldn't be anything beyond seeing the database's name in PMA anyway.

Stifu: I think the MySQL console is a very fast way to do any of those

I think things like IP search should have it's pages though, clicking a link in a user profile is most faster than going into PMA and doing the right query.

Pages that could be accessed from both the admin panel and from user profiles, I'd say.

There is a very good reason not to rely on direct DB access to perform admin functions. There was an event that happened a couple months before I first registered that involved a slip of the fingers and a large number of accounts being deleted as a result.

As a matter of policy, I don't think accounts should ever be deleted. Posts should never be allowed to be deleted by anyone except by the poster, if at all. Abusive content should only edited out (or hidden), and the edit logged.

Also, why do admin functions need to be in a "panel"? All user specific functions could be accessed from profiles and all global functions could be linked in the page header.
